The WBA has instructed Roy Jones, Jr. that his mandatory title defense is due by September 1. Jones, who won the heavyweight belt from John Ruiz on March 1, received a June 9 letter from WBA championship chairman Renzo Bagnariol that "suggested" Jones begin negotiations with Vitali Klitschko by July 1. Of course, Klitschko fights world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis next Saturday, so until then it remains unclear who Jones' mandatory will be. David Tua is rated second and he has already indicated a willingness to face Jones. A purse bid could be held as soon as August 1.
