ZDK depends on how good the instructor is
way back in the days when I used to train - there was a ZDK school with a great teacher - he left and was replaced with a dud -
it became a 'get your black belt in 1 yr' school - so a couple of us hard street fighters heard about some local boys suddenly becoming black belts and acting like heroes -
we decided to go join in one day and see how good these blokes were - once in the sparring stages - it took Jimmy 'the jig' greek all of 30seconds to kick the living **** out of the so called 'black belt' -
the guy was a bloody mess screaming like a girl saying 'thats not how you fight? - crap -
after that we moved on to Fitzroy Stars and learned the art of fighting the proper way - no belts bull**** - just solid techniques and workouts - our view of ZDK after that was pretty poor.

Another point - Bob Jones trained his top BJC fighter - I think his name was Ben Hamilton - I'm sure he'd be a tough nut in the street - anyway - he threw him in a 8 man eliminator and he somehow managed to beat his first opponent on points - his fighting style was ordinary to say the least - Ben didnt show for his second fight because he completelly smashed up his fists in the first fight - strange stuff
may he a conditioning issue with the BJC training methods.
as to the quote its the most effective street fighting style - the most effective tsreet fighting style is the art of street fighting - there are no rules - I've seen plenty of 'kickboxers', boxers, blackbelts, you name the bloody belts gets their arses kicked big time in street situations, then again I've also witnessed some trained up nuts destroy half a pub in fights - my training has helped me get out of plenty of scrapps but mental attitude is critical.
As an example, in an old Blitz magazine, an experienced black belt 2+dan instructor wrote an article about his street encounter, when he was confronted by a group of men out in the street he completely froze up, **** him self, saying if they went any further he would have been finished off -
in terms of effective - the Brazilian ju jistu boys would take about 30seconds to make ANY BJC/ZDK fighter submit - in a contest or the street, I'll put my money behind the Brajilian art any day

There's only one Bob Jones and the great man himself is a living legend. I agree, here should be more write up's on the great man.

I know what u mean Krama, I know of ZDK instructors who were automatically made BJC muay thai instructors and personally feel this is wrong as they don't really know what they are teaching and get the two styles confused which leaves the student confused also.
I wouldn't have a problem with the grading system either if money wasn't involved as this seems to be the main concern with some clubs. Having said that I'm sure there are many top BJC clubs around (I know Kerry McNaught started off with BJC among others)and Bob Jones himself is a pioneer, you can find writes up about him in loads of past Blitz mags.
