Hungarian boxer dies in Australia after training accident
May 07, 2009 Hungarian light heavyweight boxer Andras Nagy has died in Melbourne as a result of a training accident, the president of the Hungarian Boxing Federation said.
"The 23-year-old sportsman had a head-on collision with another boxer at a training session on May 1 and suffered a brain haemorrhage," Sandor Csotonyi said, confirming Hungarian media reports.
Nagy was taken to hospital and operated on twice but in the end, could not be saved, Csotonyi added.
A silver medallist at the world youth boxing championships in 2002, Nagy went to Australia in January for financial reasons and to learn English.
He had planned to stay for six months, Csotonyi said.
The 23-year-old had fought three professional bouts so far and won all of them. His first Australian match was scheduled for May 22.
