Fighters like:
- Greg Foley
- Mark Mullans
- Tony Antonio
- Murat Mehmet
- Fatih Hassan
- Wally Haddara
Have huge amounts of potential. We must see more of these guys... What do you reckon?

Im sorry Janer but I have serious doubts about both Mehmet and Antonio. Mehmet always looks like he is out of shape and Antonio has non-existent hands. I know that this is for fighters with potential but I think there would be others in front of these two out there.

Realistically, if these guys mentioned dont step up and make an impact.. Where is kickboxing going to be in 5 yrs when the Ozkans, Parrs and Dawsons have retired?
IS there ever gonna be another Ozkan? Another JWP?? Another Dawson out of the list?
We need new talent, and to be honest I am still not worried if I miss the event on monday night. Where is Arthur Tsokonas, he has amazing talant but he wanted to retire! Come on people who are closely involved, put some money back into the sport and get some new breed happening or the sport will fade...
- Is this why the super promoter is trying to get into other capers such as promoting concerts? He can obviously see the future. Smart man.

I think what tarik has done with nandex is great - building up another name in the sport, but there are people fighters the board who deserve recognition. again, politics will continue to hold back the sport.
Koshy
25-04-2003, 06:33 PM
Bullett what about a guy like Carnage Corbett. No one even knows his name and he has beaten Nadex. Tarik promotes the guys who are close to him, it gives me that creepy Don King vibe to Aussie kickboxing.
JANER
25-04-2003, 06:38 PM
Koshy you said "Tarik promotes the guys who are close to him".
Well of course he has to. Its normal day to day business. He trusts those close to him. Its not politics, its normal business activities to buy/spend with people who you know.
If Assosoations like ISKA etc etc had half a brain, then could have tournaments/events with any fighter who wishes to sign up. Promoters arent authorities, they are entrepenuers.

I know what your saying Janer but my point is that the only way for fighters in this sport to earn the big dollars is to fight on the big shows. Tarik has the big shows but for years has retarded the growth of the sport by only promoting the fighters that are directly tied to him, now are you saying that a promoter cant make money putting on fighters who are not on his payroll? Surly guys like Carnage, Soren, and numerous others could have been household names by now if they had the coverage of say a guy like Mehmet?
BULLET
25-04-2003, 06:46 PM
True true. a person like tarik is especially hard to trust considering the s.hit that goes on. look at the controversies that arise whenever you mention the name Tarik Solak.
paul c
25-04-2003, 08:39 PM
Cmon guys,
honestly, I respect you blokes and am not dissagreeing for the sake of it.
I think Solak has done twice or 3 times more than anyone else in Aus Kickboxing.
He's far from retarded the sports growth.
He's the opposite to retarding growth.
Janer,
Gotta agree with you on Mark Mullans. A while back I trained out of Malvern where Mark was training, and he was good then. But comparing to his status now after seeing his fight in Sydney last year, he has excelled heaps. Great pontential and a great guy also.
Mr. T

Does anyone know anything about a fighter called John Purcell. I saw him beat Paul Lee last year and thought he had great potential. Anyone got any info on his fight records or upcoming fights??
sethridge
25-04-2003, 10:32 PM
there are guys in wa and qld who would wipe the floor with those guys janer just cause you havnt seen them on tariks shows or fox doesnt mean they are not there.. realisticly if you hold the future on them guys you musnt know anything about MT or KICKBOXING outside of vic.

This is the bottom line i think everyone is trying to argue:
there is plenty of talent across the country: YES??
but the situation is that the coverage needs to be divided equally across the country so that everybody has a chance to promote these guys.

I believe Daniel America will be a big name in the Kickboxing/K-1 world, some day.
Yea.

28-04-2003, 09:25 AM
Janer - interesting list
wouls have to agree with sethridge - there are guys fighting out of QLD and WA that would play with Antonio and Hassan until they get sick of and quickly Ko them at will - these fighters are not part of the Tarik bandwagon and therefore do not get he recognition Aust wide - I believe they quite frankly do not give a stuff what Tarik or Vic people think of them - these guys (ie Soren) are hugely popular in Thailand for example and thats what matters to them -
Antonio has great kicks but his hands are very iffy
SPADA
28-04-2003, 10:19 PM
What about the Belarius fighter... Alexi??? midnight express. He bashed Baris and I haven't seen him since?
paul c
28-04-2003, 10:37 PM
He recently def Steve Duett Spada, but I have to agree that Alexie sounds like a promising Champ Star fighter.
I think this Chris Johnson guy sounds pretty impressive as well. He must have a huge KO percentage ratio, cos every fight I've heard of him being in, he's won by KO.
Shane
29-04-2003, 01:20 AM
Yes chris johnson is a very tough boy.He has a big back ground in full contact karate. The only person to beat him from oz is frank zammet from stuart mckinnons gym in sydney. That was a awsum fight that went the whole seven rounds. It was a war between them.

Welcome to the forum Shane,
I was really impressed with your fight against Cedric.
Your also looking fitter than I've ever seen you look.
Well done.
When do you think you'll be turning pro?
You should be getting paid with the performances you put on.

I remember this fight well. It's from a Jez promotion at Marconi in 99. You looked pretty wobbled there at one stage, but came back incredibly to KO the guy.

Thanks for the kind words Shacols, but these are pretty crappy. I was pretty new to the sport and was still shooting outrageosly grainy film in extremelly poor lighting.

far out paul you have been around. Ahd yes i did step up a little weight. I was ment to fight an american at 90 kg but he couldnt make it so they told me i was fighting cedric at 96. So i stopped dieting on the wensday and made 92 kg. but when cedric hopped on scales i never seen em go up so high in my life 101kg. so wat do you do. I trained hard so i took it up. And yes paul i will be on few times a week. Its good to talk to some nice people. Didnt relly expect it.

Thanks Shacols, your too kind.
I'm really happy with my stuff since about mid way 2001, but before that it was a real struggle. For us photographers Lucy's shows are the exception in Sydney now, her lighting guys seem to put in a hell of a lot more light. My mate Ian Sly has some pretty tough lighting conditions to work with, and it's rare that he can get the same advantages that I take for granted in Melbourne. As you've said Shacols....the black background makes it a hell of a lot better an image. But you can't get that to happen unless you've got a huge diffence in brightness between ring and background. That's why I'm allways quietly hinting that promoters should choose venues with higher cielings.
I know it sounds pretty extreme a consideration for a kickboxing show, but if you think about it....the people that don't go to their shows are judging the events and basing their assumptons by how good the reports are, and how good the event looks in the pics.
check out the lighting difference by this pic I'm posting below.

thats a quality pic in my opinion.i definately agree about
the assumptions on the shows by public.the promoters should realize the importance of this.when i see a good pic of a show that ive missed,i think damn should have been there.i wont miss the next one.
i especially like your idea of the i/k mag being colour.man that would an a1 quality mag.its still a good mag,but with full colour along with the articles would make it so much better and would give you a realler (is that a wordlol) feeling on what the show was like.
paul c
29-04-2003, 03:12 AM
I reckon that Blitz are going to have to risk it some day.
I dunno perhaps they could just start with a colour double page spread in the middle or something, and get the most prestigeous of their advertizers interested in using some of the outside space, and using the inside on the best fights or pics that have happened in that period between the previous issue.
Man, how cool would it be if we got it to the same material quality and layout as the flagship mag Blitz.
Lucky I'm not the general manager there, because I'd probably end up doing something morally wrong. Like creating some sort of slush fund for kickboxer with the funds that come in from some of the other mags advertizing.

No Shane,
We both shoot for IK when we go to shows, and both are photographers, so we have a common ground to talk about when we meet up in Sydney etc. My family lives in Sydney, so I try and time my visits with Sydney's kickboxing shows when possible.
I live in Albury, but cover just about all the Victorian shows for the mag, and for the promoters personal websites. After I finsih my Masters I'll either move to Melbourne or come back to Sydney, depending on where my best work prospects are.
Welcome to the board Shane.
Yeah, welcome to Shane Meads, u r a top kickboxer, haven't seen ALOT of u but know u train out of Bulldog that is enough for me....!
