I've only heard the term a couple of times, and I too haven't a clue what it means.

I think "smoker" tournaments are amateur tournaments.

Adam Watt shock news???

Gee, I hope Adam is still going to be in the Oceania.
I thought he was awesome last year, and would love to see him defend it.

I read somewhere that he had retired, so I hope the article in Kickboxer isn't confirmation on that.

Smokers tournaments are for amatuers, they wear bigger gloves 16oz, shin pads and helmets, the rounds are shorter, 90sec, and judging is done by the referee ( Paul Briggs).
Everyone still fights in a ring, but the whole day is a lot more low key so that there is less pressure on the fighters.
It is for encouraging people who normally just do the class type of training to step up and have a go, in turn producing more amature fighters for the bigger shows.
Wayne has introduced a novice title belt (which looks great) for the first person to fight three consectutive shows and win on all three shows.
Last time 250 came to watch 20 fights for only $15
The next show is May 4th

Hehe, that's pretty clever.

I wonder how far away the name originated. Was it born in Aus, or have you guys heard if from O.S?

I can't believe you have Daniel Americs as the rookie of the year? Toma Tehuna has had the same time frame in the game and accomplished far, far more. Daniel has only had maybe three or four fights? Toma had about 10 in that time & would destrot him

paul c

Wolverine,

Can you tell us more about the fights Toma has had?

I'm not being a smart ass, just genuinely interested because I only saw the one on Fox.

Lots of reading.
There allways is, but this time there's a bunch more stuff than I usually read.

Good job.
Pretty educational with all the top 10's as well.

Hi guys

Thanks for the comments, since taking over editorship of the magazine once more I've tried to make the magazine such that you want to read EVERYTHING in it and not skip past any sections. Hence you won't find any long winded show reports any more in favour of a quick round up, and you won't find any long winded fluffy pieces on fighters but rather punchier, harder hitting interviews and shorter, sharper stories and more of them. I have also increased Ringside Round Up from three pages to SIX or SEVEN pages - more news, more rumours, more gossip.

The TOP 10 section is sure to get some interesting feedback and was the big surprise section for this issue... it has over 300 listings. I will be having a BIG section in the middle of every magazine from now on... in fact today I began writing up the big section for the next issue, which is even more interesting than the Top 10 and will be about a 15 page chunk smack bang in the centre of the magazine -- but I cant tell you what it is yet!

I am also curious as to whether YOU the readers like the new COLUMNS in this issue... if you like, they will stay on :)

There will be some more readers polls coming up on here, please everyone take part. Your answers to Themelakis vs Headhunter and SHOULD STAN RETIRE feature in this latest issue.

Enjoy!

Michael, after reading the last IK magazine, I can tell the magazine is now been edited by someone who obviously knows about kickboxing and is UP TO-DATE with the scene.

I have been purchasing the magazine for at least 3 years and fighters like Gurkan Ozkan, Prince Amir & Mark May never got any mention. Surely like was mentioned in the Top 10 that victoria has the best and biggest crowds. In return more of our victorian fighters should get fron page, or a large write up on them ie. Interviews.

The set out of the mag is far more superior than others and alot more of the rubbish it cut out and burnt. One useless peice of information were the ISKA and WKA Kickboxing Ratings... Thang god there not in there!

- Gurkan Ozkan
- Michael Zambidis
- Stan The Man
- Jenk Behic
- Daniel Dawson
- JWP

These fighters are the currently the biggest thing in Australian kickboxing and reading the last magazine, clearly its the most informing and up-to-date style of magazine ever printed.

Not only did the magazine flaunt our peaking stars and prospects, it also gave mention to all our great fighters which were the foundations of kickboxing today.

Michael after thinking about what I just wrote, seriously who the hell was in charge back in the days? Either one Anit-Victorian or one old timer who didnt depict the current kickboxing scene...

"Seriously, What the HELL did you expect?"

(ignore my poor spelling, cant be bothered going back to fix it)

PS - Im interested to know, do you pring out a mock up for the magazine or do you just hope for the best it will look good? Who proof reads the magazine? Is there some kind of spell checker?

Michael,

re the mags new look and layout.

I do much prefer it now.
This is what I was talking about when I was saying it should be more Tabloidy. Shorter articles and too the point, with tons of pictures. Lots of specualation and goss is essential to get the fans imaginations running.

I think it's now aimed more at us fans, where as before it seemed to be more for the people involved (guys training etc). So, I really think and hope that the sales will grow, where as before I felt it was pretty limited.

But, it still needs to be in colour.
It's got to happen one day.

Good work Michael. The magazine has improved dramatically over the last few issues. Keep on the improvements, it finally looks like it might get somewhere. Thanks for getting rid of the boring 3 page write ups about shows that we can read on the net. The good thing was that it offered us a fair few things that are not found on the net, like interviews.

remy
25-04-2003, 12:25 AM
And columns from fighters and trainers was a great idea. Hope these columns become a regular feature.

i have to agree with everyone.i really have enjoyed the last 2 issues
alot more.i couldnt have waited any longer for th last issue.
Pauls idea of colour is awesome.that would definately get me subscribing.

Although,i disagree that most of the articles should be if victorians.
next youll wanna change the name to victorian kickboxer.lol

Hehe,

you give it to them Shacols.

Cheeky Victorians.

remy

I would actually like to see more international stuff, like an interview with LeBanner and things like that, from the big stars, diet tips, etc. Without decreasing the Australian content however, so that means more pages.

remy
25-04-2003, 03:28 AM
However, I didn't think the top 10 stuff was that great. Gets one thinking I guess, but most of it is so subjective. It's not a poll, it's the opinion of a few. So it would be good to perhaps see trainers and fighters from around the country rating other fighters. ie who do you think is pound for pound best fighter in Australia, with the opinions of respected names around the country. Just an idea.

paul c
26-04-2003, 08:40 PM
Remy,

I think it's great for new people. Even after 4 years of pretty intense involvement..........you guys know how much I crap on about stuff here, I still feel like a novice fan. So I think for me the 'Top 10's were great for putting stuff into 'Ballparks'.

You know, like I'm wondering how good a fighter of the past was......then I see him as no 7 on the list of all time great kickers etc etc.

remy
26-04-2003, 09:37 PM
It is probably good for people new to the sport. Still would like to see some views of well known trainers and fighters in Australia. Always makes it more interesting to see the different view points.
