View Full Version : Australia's Best Trainer Is ???????

Guys,
The other thread in the forum asks which trainers don't get the recognition they deserve, I'm hoping that here we can maybe end up voting on an
Unofficial Blitz Forum Peoples Vote Survey And Award.
First prize, a big well done, and a pat on the back. Some of these guys are such dedicated people. Let's think about it, these guys are putting in all the hard yards for someone elses Glory. Amazing people.
So, lets have it guys.
For me, if I think consistency, I have to say Scida. But, as you know I'm not very experienced and wouldn't have a clue. But what I can contribute is what I hear from other industry people.
Scida gets huge raps from just about everyone.

Actually guys, Just wanted to point out that my point of view should just apply for Victoria. I'm sure there are just as accomplished trainers in N.S.W, QLD, Sout Aust, Perth, etc. I'ts just that I don't hear about them because I'm working amongst a different circle.
I hope you will contribute to this thread and educate us so that we can have a clearer knowledge of whom they have trained.

Son Doi . Without a doubt would have to be one of the best.
Just look at some of the guys he has trained :
Alex Tui - Australia's 1st world champion
Marcus 'maddog' Mangan - multiple world champion
Son Doi jnr
Dale Middleton
Con Liristis
And other fighters that have trained with Son during their careers:
Steve Jez - multiple world champion
Mark May - world champion
Goran Atlagic
Dragonmir Dubucannin
Gino Zampagna
Shane Meads
Son Doi is a quiet man , never seeks publicity , is not a glory hunter , just a trainer who really loves the sport and trains people to be the best they can be and to have a similar attitude to the sport like his.
I may be biased as Son was also my trainer , but im sure if you ask , you wont find anyone who would have a bad word to say about Son
Cheers

Yeah Scida for me!
I think we have alot of good trainers in this country, but this guy gets the absolute best out of all of his fighters. He promotes a family atmosphere in his gym by the looks of things (almost the whole gym attends a fight when an ultimate fighter is competing). Barely any of Scida's fighters leave him for other gyms and he has a nice franchise of Ultimate gyms the right way through the western suburbs. I think Scida has produced a system that he feels works best for his fighters and he trains them to adhere to this principle. He is always open to outside ideas ie: the Thailand trip he just took some of his fighters on. I think John Scida is a legend of the sport and he gets my vote for this. Other trainers i like and admire are- Jamal Hasan, Paul Fiefield, Kerry Mcnaught and lets not any of us forget the majical Dana Goodson
Rickstar.

Very True Drew,
Son has to be considered as right up there with the elite trainers if we're going to count the numbers of Champions. that's an impressive list you've compiled, my favourite being Mangan. He was one hard dude in the videos I've seen.
Drew, do you know what's happening with Middleton?
I haven't seen him fight for ages. Actually, I've seen quite a few videos, but have never heard of him fighting since about 99.

JANER

My opinion of a great trainer is one who can take on a beginner and build them up to a champion.
Jemal Hassan is one of those trainers who did infact train ALL of Tarik Solak fighters.
Fighters included:
- Celal Ilhan
- Bader Arafan
- Birol Topuz
- Gurkan Ozkan
- Tibet Hamza
- Recep Saka
- Fatih Hassan
- Murat Mehment
- Baris Nezif
80% of the fighters mentioned started off with jemal at a young age and built up into Victorias/Australias defining fighters.
I also know Gallijess who is not publicly known who is a great trainer for grappling and is going from strength to strength. Paul Fylfield is a great trainer, but is most of the time training fighters with a good background.
I also got to mention Johny Scida who trains both males and females and brings them up into top fighters like Jenk Behic and the ever improving Chris Christopoulides.
For me, the pure trainers are:
1. Jemal Hassan
2. Johny Scida
3. Galijess
Note: I live in melbourne so I am unaware with those interstate.

I think Richard walsh from the Boonchu gym is the best in qld. He has done alot of work and put in alot of time with everyone at the boonchu gym, it can't be easy holding pads for the likes of John Wayne Parr, Paul Briggs, Nathan Carnage, Adam Aggressor, plus there are alot more guys down there that he gets through every night that arn't push overs.
Thanks for all your hard work in getting us fit for our fights.

Guys,
Qld has the best trainers for MT by a long way.
But number one...
Nugget!
He has trained: Josh Sexton, Brian Murphy, Brendon 'humpty' Short, Brett 'the Butcher' Zanchetta, Craig 'the hammer' Hogan, Shannon 'shaggy' King, Soren Mongkongton and many more.
And he has done work to further develop Scotty Bannan as well as flying down to Melbourne to help Tarik prepare Ozkan (so even the other trainers recognise Nugget as the authority).
Further to that, he has taught JWP a thing or two in the ring (2 wins from 2) and same with Kurt Finlayson etc. I have been told that Nugget is also well known in parts of Thailand as a kick-ass fighter and great trainer too.
He has now become the best promoter (with Josh Sexton) in Qld as well.
And also in Qld we have Boonchu Gym and Strikeforce Gym (Mark Pease) etc.
Cheers,
CharlieA

Paul Grima from Pitbull
Being a South Aussie, Id have to say Alan Wong as being up with the best trainers in Australia. He has produced champion fighters like Paul Slowinski, Sam Harvey, Ethan Shepp, Ray and Lawrence Bujea, David Allen and many new up and coming young fighters. Alan Wong, Mark Pease, Nugget and Jo Hilton are some of the greatest Muay Thai trainers out there.

my vote goes to scida over the last twenty years he has continualy produced fighters of high standard in boxing kickboxing and muay thai every time you see a major card on in melb one of his fighters are on it the likes of chris c. anthony vella jenk behic illas i. laura skinner joanne falzon evian t. nick t. jason t. one of the new up and comers in kickboxing and boxing and a string of new fighters coming up in the gym my vote would have been for the late dan goodson but scida takes the cake for volume of fighters and talent

Best Trainer without a dout would have to go to scida.
I think that his record of champions & titles speaks for them selfs and also keeping in mind that all of his fighters such as jenk behic & evan themalarkis & chris chrisopoulidis & joane falzon & laura skinner & jason tramsek are all good sportsmen and gentlemen inside and outside the ring and need no introduction to honour and loyalty to trainer & club & sport and themselfs.

Bob Jones - Lets not forget that it was the chief who introduced kickboxing and thai boxing to Aust.
Many of Australias best trainers would have had some influence from the BJC.
The corporation blood line is over 30 years old, so most trainers were taught by someone, or their trainer was taught someone who had some involement with the Bob Jones corporation.

Without being bias :), I would have to say that Darren Reece would have to be up there as one of the best trainers. I think a good trainer is not only a matter of holding pads well or giving good instructions during fights or at training but also giving that little bit extra aswell. Darren is an awesome pad holder and his years of experience give him the extra knowledge but he puts himself out to make sure his fighters and his gym members are always fit, healthy, comfortable and are just generally happy. Riddlers Gym has a great reputation in Perth of being a close knit gym and thats because he makes sure everyone that steps through the doors is treated equally and with the respect they deserve.
Im a firm believer that a fighter is a representation of their trainer in many ways. Darren treats people the way he likes to be treated and has been treated. Thats what makes a top trainer.

Nish, let's say you're training with Nugget a trainer of champions in oz or any other champion trainer for that matter. You've made up your mind that they are the best trainer in oz.
All of a sudden Cor Hemmers decides to move to Qld about 20km's from the gym you're at. Would you stick to your trainer or shoot straight out to Mr Hemmers joint?
Sometimes, you're trainer is the best trainer that is available to you but not necessarily the best.
The replies in the forum were just of gym members posting up their own trainers.
Bit subjective if you ask me.
I can't be bold enough to say who is the best trainer, but I can give preference to whom I like. To say who is the best would imply I've tried them all and am then able to criticize them all and even then, again it would only be my subjective opinion, not some national truth.
Sometimes trainer A may be able to take one member to become world champion and not have a clue on how to bring out the best of another member. The member does a simple gym swap and all of a sudden he/she is a serious contender.
Does it mean trainer A is not as good as the next trainer?
Hardly...
Just my thoughts on this issue.

Loyalty has nothing to do with it. This isn't about "Australia's most loyal trainee". It's about "Australia's best trainer" which I think is unanswerable by most of us who haven't experienced much past one, two or three trainers.
People like Nick Stone I could take an answer from after looking at the various exposure he has had to various trainers over his long involvement in the sport. But a gym surfer or a trainee of only a couple of gyms is hardly someone to ask or take an answer from.

LXXIX, you don't have to agree with someone to be able to get along with them. Everyone's entitled to an opinion obviously, but its when certain posters start being rude, swearing, and getting personal that things start to get heated on the forums.
In general, you'll find everyones opinion is respected here, because they express it without any intent of offending other people.... Except for a few half-wits ofcourse...

Australia's best trainers, gotta be Mat Reid and Sharon 'Viper' Quirk.
I would also like to congratulate them on their awards won at the BJC Ball.
Mat for 'Fighter of the Year'
and Sharon 'Novice fighter of the Year'
Without those to I would still be a fat lump with too much free time.
Now I'm a lump with bugger all free time and a black singlet

Please explain exactly what you mean by this.

Mat received the Muay Thai fighter of the year and this was decided by a pannel within BJC. There were criteria that had to be met to get into either Novice or Muay Thai.
Obviously your upset that you missed out on the netball award at your local club.
Mat is probably one of the most active BJC Muay Thai fighters at the moment, he trains hard, he trains his students hard and has dedicated a hell of a long time in to BJC and Muay Thai.
He travels to Melbourne at least twice a week to train so he can stay at a high level, travels to Thailand to train and fight, is the current WMC Victorian title holder @ around 81kg (can't remember the weight exactly).
If you can show me a fighter that trains within the BJC sylabus that is more active than that, then they may be in with a chance. I can't recall any that are as active.
Looking forward to hearing from you again Golden Geek.

Matt was awarded the accolade as the BJC Fighter of the year, and obviously in Victoria, as a PRACTISING BJC student, thus the award..
Simple, it's a BJC award to a BJC Student / instructor / fighter
