View Full Version : CHEERIO's for FOX SPORTS - OZKAN vs TSAKANOS

Hi Guys

Well the big Keilor show is a matter of days away... the question looms large - after all the talk and all the hype, who will win the main event??

Will the "all new and improved" Gurkan Ozkan (yes, a new trainer in Paul Fyfield - the man who steered Sam Greco and Tosca Petridis to fighting fame) plant the BIG KABOSH on Arthur Tsakonas or will the Stone Mason from the outer Eastern Suburbs say GOODNIGHT IRENE to Ozkan??

The semi main event will be a corker too as "The Great White Shark" Jenk Behic takes on Kiwi import "Iron" Mike Cope... remember, Cope was the man who bled Mike Zambidis on the K-1 Oceania...

ANYWAY... the fight will be shown on FOXSPORTS (albeit delayed) and if anyone would like a CHEERIO simply post it on here and I will endeavour to say g'day to you on the night.

BTW, sorry if you missed out on the Perth show as computer and server problems prevented many of the cheerios from being read out.

SO... if you want a big hello POST IT HERE!!!

See you all at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday May 26... THE TIME FOR TALK IS OVER!!

Another great idea Michael,
Can you give a big holler to Jack Mackeral and the Mango Hillbillies.
Its a new shed i have erected and a couple of the local lads have started training with me.
Also a big i love you from jack to my Wife vanessa who is expecting our first child soon would be much appreciated. During the semi main event would be best if possibkle?
Keep up the great commentary. Sh**s all over the boxing guys.

Great news that Ozkan is training with Paul Fyfield. Does that mean that Ozkan has left Braveheart gym or FLyfield works at the Braveheart gym.

Ozkan now trains out of the Underworld gym,
with Paul Fyfield. Fyfield is one of the
best trainers around, If he can't get
Gurkan to fire on the 26th no one can.

Hi Jack

I stayed home and watched it live, but thanks for the offer... go Taker!! I knew he'd beat Hogan, but it was a bit of a fizzer match... guess the old farts just aren't that quick any more... and what's with Taker's new music?? ****e. Go back to the old garb I say and bring back Paul Bearer... "The Urn! The Urn"

Best fight was the Hell in a Cell... what an epic! That was awesome.

The Hair vs Hair match was hilarious, though spewing Angle lost as I reckon he's the best wrestler in the WWE, but they are giving Edge a huge push.

Did you see RAW last night? Oh man, I was so happy for all of two seconds when RVD won the title... oh well... good to see RVD getting a push too... with more work on his outfit and presentation he could be the next Shawn Michaels I reckon.

Anyway... that's my wrestling two cents for today!!

PS: Did you see that Davey Boy Smith (aka The British Bulldog) died!! What a tragedy... only 40 years old.

Okay guys, girls and those who fit somewhere in between

Time is almost up... you have one last night to post your cheerios for the big Keilor show broadcast (delayed on FoxSports).

Cheerio yourselves, your friends and your loved (or hated) ones now or forever hold your peace.

Have a great night everybody... I'm off to Stalactites for dinner!!

May the big Bok Choy be with you all.

Michael :)

hey michael, it that the greek restaurant on brunswick st? or am i totaly wrong?

Also, are you from an italian and/or greek?? I guess the commentary be biased! hehe kidding

while im here "hello to all the boys who sweat it out at THE MUSCLE FACTORY in reservoir!"

Michael Schiavello
24-05-2002, 10:57 AM
Hi Janer

No, Stalactites in on the corner of Russel and Lonsdale in the city... 24 hours... mad ass dips! LOL

No I am not Greek, my origins are actually Italian, so there will be no biased in the commentary. Anyway, I never let ethnicity affect judgement - all I want to ever see in any sport are just good matches, fights, etc... so BRING EM ON!! Even if this Sunday's show was not touted as Greeks vs Turks (which it could have been and would have sold just as well I believe) I still think it's an excellent show from a spectator's point of view.

Let's have a look why:

OZKAN vs TSAKONAS

Here you have Ozkan on the one hand who has done virtually everything there is to do in the sport... he has won his fans, he has pissed people off, he has entertained masses; he has won world titles, he has lost world titles; he has never ever sidestepped anyone and whether you like Gurkan or not you cant deny that the guy has balls the size of canteloupes! He even took a punt (albeit an unsuccessful one) as a heavyweight. He has fought the big names - Jacobs, Vermes, Graham, Changpuek, Dendenai, Ambrose, Taiei Kin, Westerman, Soliman, Briggs. But every so often a CHALLENGE comes along for Ozkan from his own backyard and that is what has happened here. Tsakonas, still a relative unknown from his lack of fights against big names and his management's unwillingness to put him as a headliner on big cards, has been making waves. He's tough, he's undefeated, he has only really fought one big name (John Halford, draw) one semi-big name (Sam Harvey, draw) and one decent interstater name (Gino Zampogna, win). But now he is to fight OZKAN - a name you want on your resume as having beaten. You beat OZKAN and you're known instantly.
What we also have here is a clash of styles with a secret twist... we all know Ozkan as the one-dimensional bomber with hands like diesel pistons and not much in the way of leg kicks. Hey, that formula has worked well for him for much of his career, but now comes Ozkan II - under the guidance of Paul "SilverFox" Fyfield. The question is, what differences will we see in Ozkan now that Fyfield is in the corner? A more disciplined Ozkan? Less irrational when push comes to shove? A fitter Ozkan? A better Ozkan defensively? The answer is: All of the above.
Now, what do we know about Tsakonas? He is a brick mason by trade so you know that the boy is tough - anyone who spends their day lifting granite and marble slabs has to be. We know that he is durable - he took some awesome shots from Zampogna, Harvey and Halford in wars and held his ground. We know that he hits to hurt and that he is calculating in that he doesn't throw many punches and kicks that go astray. He picks his shots well and plants them with power. But, and here is the big BUT, Tsakonas is FAMED as a SLOW STARTER... there is no hiding this. Case in point - just look at the Halford fight... and the Harvey fight... Arthur takes at least two rounds to warm up --- yet (yes, you all know what I'm gonna say) OZKAN's best is inside those first TWO rounds.
INTERESTING HEY?!

Another question: who will be affected by the BIGNESS of the event? It will be a volatile, voiceful crowd - more Turk than Greek I am tipping... who will handle it better??
Ozkan enjoys a crowd behind him - he gets off on it. It fuels him and fuels his ethnic drive - afterall, he was in the Turkish army going back many moons ago - the man is a very proud Turk but MORE than making this a race war, OZKAN is a VERY PROUD ATHLETE.
However, as has been proven in the past crowd support can be a double-edged knife... Ozkan has lifted to great heights with huge support but it has also overwhelmed and maybe over-burdened him at times and he hasn't handled it well (Vermes, Tai, etc).

As for TSAKONAS... well, he has never headlined a show in Melbourne outside of the Springvale Town Hall. But that's cool - that's Tsakonas. He is a man who tells his management that he DOESN'T want to fight in headline events... that he's happy to be a mid-carder... he aint after the kudos of the crowd, he just wants to do his best for himself. Given that will he feel the 'pressure' of the crowd this Sunday night? It would be hard not too, but you get the feeling that Tsakonas is that level-headed and that 'don't care who's there' of attitude that it won't upset him.

So in the end who do you pick?? Well, it's anyone's guess... but if history has taught us anything it is this:
OZKAN had better explode in those first two or three rounds in which TSAKONAS is traditionally slow or he will find the going tough in the latter rounds... and TSAKONAS better be prepared to be hit harder than he's ever been hit before.

A war is brewing... hope to see you all there.

:)
