Tetoros closes on title shot
February 27, 2003
ASIA Pacific super lightweight champion Nick Tetoros is closing in on a shot at the WBO world title.
Tetoros, who has a record of 14 wins - nine by knockout - from 16 fights, will continue his campaign against Queenslander Brad Hemming on March 14.
Tetoros' manager, Peter Maniatis, said today that if he wins, a bout against Italian Gianluca Branco, the WBO No.3, was set for later this year.
A victory in that clash would earn the 31-year-old Victorian a showdown with American world titleholder DeMarcus Corley.
Corley, a southpaw from Washington, took the title two years ago and most recently defended it last January against Randall Bailey in a 12 round unanimous points decision.
Corley has won 28 of his 30 bouts, 16 on knockouts.
Tetoros is ranked WBO world No.8, but would move to No.6 with a win over Hemming.
Hemming, 24, has six wins, three losses and a draw from his 10 fights, but has won just one of his past five bouts.
Tetoros has successfully defended his Asia Pacific title twice - the last time he knocked out Brian Fogerty of Queensland in the third round last November.
