Ken Shamrock's son Ryan Shamrock defeated Josh Besneatte in his MMA
debut on 8/25/07. The bout was fought at 130 lbs. The event took place
on the Fight at the Falls show in Oroville, CA. The promotionm is ran
by Ryans father Ken Shamrock.
-Former UFC Heavyweight Champion and former King of Pancrase Josh
Barnett posted some interesting comments regarding Randy Couture's
victory on his web site http://www.joshbarnett.tv/content/view/71/1/
"UFC Heavyweight title? Not in my eyes. Written by Josh Barnett
Tuesday, 28 August 2007"
"Let's get straight to it and say that Randy did a phenomenal job at
UFC 74 in defending his title. As a fan and a fellow Washingtonian I
was happy to see him win. But as for the title itself -- it still sits
in my house. No one in UFC ever beat me for it, and as far as I am
concerned, no one in the UFC can be the heavyweight champion until they
take that belt off of me in the cage."
"At the post fight press conference, Dana White said "there isn't
anyone in the world that can beat this guy" in reference to Randy. All
this because Randy beat a guy that had less than ten fights and only
one noteworthy win?"
"That's not even a world championship level fight, let alone reason to
proclaim the winner as "unbeatable". This comment was made even more
ridiculous by the fact that I was standing right there, living proof
that Randy Couture is definitely beatable."
"Unbeatable", "Dana says. If he actually believes that, I'm more than
willing to step into the cage and prove him wrong. It wouldn't even
have to be for the belt. I already got the real belt. They can keep
their pile of brass they purport as the UFC Heavyweight Title and put
it on their next paper champ."
Josh Barnett defeated Randy Couture to win the UFC Heavyweight title at
UFC 36 Worlds Collide in March of 2002 where Barnett stopped Randy in
the 2rd round via TKO due to strikes on the ground. The Nevada State
Athletic Commission suspended Josh Barnett for six months following a
failed test for anabolic steroids. Barnett appealed the decision but
the commission ruled against him.
-Joe Stevenson confirmed in an interview with MMAWeekly.com that he has
a broken nose following his fight with Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 74, not a
broken jaw as I reported yesterday.
-Kazushi Sakuraba is fighting Japanese pro wrestler Katsuyori Shibata
(2-1) on the K-1 HERO's card on 9/17/07 in Japan.
-The Nevada State Athletic Commission did issue medical suspensions
for other UFC 74 fighters. However, compared to other recent UFC
events, the list of suspensions was fairly minimal. (credit
ufcjunkie.com)
Gonzaga must have his broken nose cleared by an ear-nose-and-throat
specialist, or his suspension runs until Feb. 22. If cleared, Gonzaga’s
suspension runs through Oct. 25 with no contact until Oct. 10.
Alberto Crane, who was defeated by Roger Huerta (TKO), must have his
right medial orbital blowout fracture cleared by an ophthalmologist, or
his suspension runs through Feb. 22. If cleared, Crane’s suspension
runs through Oct. 25 with no contact until Oct. 10.
Joe Stevenson, who defeated Kurt Pellegrino (unanimous decision), has
been suspended until Sept. 25 with no contact until Sept. 16 for
precautionary reasons.
Kendall Grove, who was defeated by Patrick Cote (TKO), has been
suspended until Oct. 10 with no contact until Sept. 25 for
precautionary reasons.
Renato “Babalu” Sobral, who defeated David Heath (submission), has been
suspended until Oct. 10 with no contact until Sept. 25 for
precautionary reasons.
Antoni Hardonk, who lost to Frank Mir (submission), must have an MRI of
his right shoulder and be cleared by a doctor, or his suspension runs
until Feb. 22. If cleared, Hardonk’s suspension runs through Oct. 10
with no contact until Sept. 25.
Funny enough Randy Couture was not suspended despite suffering a broken
arm in his fight with Gonzaga.
According to www.allaboutmma.com Ryo Chonan (14-7) has come to a deal
with the UFC and will be making his debut in October. An opponent has
not yet been named for the Japanese Pride veteran and DEEP champion. At
one time Chonan was consider by some fans the #1 Middleweight (185 lbs)
fighter in the world.
Chonan's most memorable victory took place on PRIDE's Shockwave show on
12/31/04 where he defeated current UFC Middleweight champion Anderson
Silva with one of the craziest leg submissions I have ever seen in the
3rd round of their encounter.
-Steve Sievert of The Houston Chronicle is reporting the reason the UFC
hasen't booked Andrei Arlovski is because he hasn't signed a contact
extension. Arlovski currently has one fight left on his contract and he
is asking price is reportedly very high.
IMO this is not a smart move for Arlovski. Dan White stated during the
UFC 70 conference call that Andrei Arlovski would meet the winner of
Randy Couture vs. the winner of Cro Cop/Gonzaga which Gonzaga won.
However in Dane White opinion Arlovski's unanimous decision victory
over Fabricio Werdum was so boring he took away the Pitbull's title
shot. When your boss publicy gives and takes away a title shot because
he is not happy with your performance, you really don't have any clout
to ask for big money.
-The word around Las Vegas is UFC President Dana White is meeting with
the management team of Fedor Emelianenko (26-1) this week and the plan
is to one way or another get a deal done by August 31. As Jeremy
Lambert mentioned in his article Fedor wants to be able to compete in
Russia however the UFC has no plans on holding a event in Russia
anytime soon.
Fedor had a lot of perks with his Pride deal. The UFC is offering more
money which is rumored to be the biggest contract the UFC has ever
offered a fighter. However it seems money is not everything with Fedor
as the UFC are not willing to grant him any of the perks he had in his
Pride deal. The most notable perks Fedor had on his Pride deal was
1. Fedor was allowed to fight for other MMA promotions if the event he
was fighting on was in Russia.
2. Fedor was able to book a few fighters from his camp; The Red Devil
sport club in Pride events.
3. Fedor was allowed to compete in Combat Sambo events since he is a
very popular figure in Sambo.
Reportedly the UFC has said no to all of these demands. Fedor's
management team has stated publicly that they are not happy with the
UFC's "take it or leave it" negotiating with their client. This is a
very sticky situation for both parties. The UFC says time and time
again they are the Superbowl of Mixed Martial Arts. However you have to
have without question the best fighter in the world to make that claim
which is Fedor Emelianenko. However how long can Fedor maintain the
status of #1 fighter in the world if he is not in the UFC?
Other promotions may be willing to pay more money then Zuffa but it is
now obvious if you want to be the best fighter in the world you need to
fight in the UFC.
-Richard Steele's IFO card in Las Vegas on 9/1/07 will feature the main
event of Travis Wiuff vs. Sean Salmon for the promotions vacant IFO
Light Heavyweight title. Salmon is replacing Chris Price who is injured
and had to back out of the fight.
-Art of War 3 USA vs. Brazil 9/1/07 on Indemand PPV.
Main Event
Jeff Monson vs. Pedro Rizzo
Jeremy Horn vs. Jorge Santiago
Ron Waterman vs. Mario Rinaldi
Keith Wisniewski vs. Carlo Prater
Jason Maxwell vs. Thomas Schulte
Anthony Njokuani vs. Keyon Mike Jackson
Lana Stefanac vs. Franita Gathings
James Stelly vs. Luis Arthur Cane
Alex Andrade vs. Fabiano Capoani
Hector Munoz vs. Cristiano Marcello
"When Chuck Norris goes to sleep, he checks under the bed for Randy
Couture."
Just a funny Randy Couture/Chuck Norris joke I found on the forums and
though was funny.

-Up and comming Featherweight (145 lbs)fighter Cub Swanson announced
via his myspace account that his fight with Jens Pulver has been
rescheduled for November 3rd.
"Fighting Jens Pulver in WEC November 3rd at the Hard Rock in Vegas.
Pulver had a knee injury so we had to push the fight back."
http://www.myspace.com/cubswanson
Jens Pulver vs. Cub Swanson was scheduled to happen on the WEC 30 card
on 9/5/07 card in Las Vegas. Pulver had to back out of the fight when
he hyper extended his knee last week in training.
Rob McCullough defending the WEC Lightweight title against Richard
Crunkilton will headline the 9/5/07 card in Las Vegas.
The Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority is drafting new Statutes that will allow the agency to regulate amateur MMA shows. This has happened in response to local promoters asking the Authority to take action to curb promoters in the state who have no medical personnel on site and allow fighters with little or no experience to fight more experienced fighters among other issues.
