MMAWeekly.com broke the story that Sean Sherk has test positive for
steroids according to the California State Athletic Commission

Sean Sherk, the reigning UFC World Lightweight Champion, who last
competed on July 7, 2007 in Sacramento, has tested positive for
Nandrolone Metabolite. He has been fined $2,500. His suspension period
runs from the conclusion of his bout on July 7, 2007 through the
remainder of his licensing year which is June 26, 2008. Furthermore, he
has been assessed an additional 10 days in order to fulfill the terms
of his suspension (365 total days). The additional days will be added
at the beginning of his next licensing year when he reapplies.

Normal levels of Nandrolone range from 2 ng/mL (average person) to 6
ng/mL (athlete engaged in rigorous activity). Mr. Sherk's reported
level certified by the Director of Science and Technology from the
laboratory that conducted the tests was 12 ng/mL. Both the "A" sample
and "B" sample were tested and confirmed as positive.

More then likely Sean Sherk will be stripped of his UFC Lightweight
title which changes the current landscape of the UFC Lightweight
division and the main event for the UFC card in November which was
going to be Sherk defending the title against BJ Penn.

MMAWekely.com also broke the story that Hermes Franca has tested
positive for steroids. Hermes Franca issued a statement to
MMAWeekly.com explaining his actions.

"In the next few days, the results from the California Commission will
be released. The tests will show that I had a "banned substance" in my
system."

"I would like to apologize to my fans, the UFC, my students and family.
I offer only an explanation and not an excuse. I made a decision during
a difficult time in my training for the fight that I regret."

"About 8 weeks out from the fight, I badly injured my ankle during a
training session. For the following week I had rested it, rehabbed it
and tried to work around the injury. It was obvious that I could not
train as required."

"I contacted the UFC and explained my injury and how I could not
possibly train to the level I thought I would need in order to be
properly prepared for my fight. I asked the UFC if we could push the
fight out to the following UFC with the chance that it could happen.
They explained that they could not do that and that the card had been
set and it isnt as easy as just moving around a fight. I totally
understood their position. They asked me to keep them informed should I
not be able to fight."

"I had not fought for 5 months. Fighting is literally how I put food on
my wife and childs table and how I pay my bills. As a fighter though,
even at this level, I live a simple life and I literally live from
fight to fight. Not getting a paycheck for another few months and
losing my chance to fight Sean for the title was overpowering. Fighting
is the life I chose and I love it."

"As a lightweight fighter, our purses are comparatively
small. The public sees the payouts. As lightweights, we do not pull
down the money anything near the bigger guys. Its just the way it is. I
think Sean fought and defended his title for less than $30,000. Its no
ones fault, its just the market. I love the sport, I love the people in
the
sport."

"At this point I was desperate and needed anything I could to get my
injury as close to healing as possible and be able to recover from the
daily training regimen I was going through. I made the shortsighted
choice to hopefully accelerate the healing process and allow me to keep
training. Under the pressure of literally not being able to pay next
months bills I made a choice. I had to fight and did whatever I could
to do so."

"I hope my fans, students, the UFC and the public accept my
sincere apology. Whatever punishment is dictated by the California
Athletic Commission I will understand. I would like to get through this
very difficult time and the times ahead and get back to fighting. All
the best to my fans and much thanks to my family and friends that
continue to support me during these times."

**Franca tested positive to Drostanolone. He has been fined $2500 and
suspended through his licensing year which is July 5, 2008.

ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP® ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF “EL MATADOR” AT UFC 74: RESPECT

HUERTA vs. CRANE

LIVE FROM THE MANDALAY BAY EVENTS CENTER

SATURDAY, AUGUST 25

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization today announced that Roger Huerta has been added to the UFC 74 fight card and that he will take on Alberto Crane, a Jiu-Jitsu black belt from New Mexico. This matchup joins the exciting lineup of fights for UFC 74, including the heavyweight championship fight Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga and Georges St-Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck. UFC 74: RESPECT will take place live from Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas Saturday, August 25.

“Roger has shown that with the right dedication and motivation, you can overcome a tough upbringing and find your way to success,” said UFC President Dana White. “On August 25, he will face a new challenge with Alberto Crane, and we will find out which of these two fighters can keep their perfect record intact. I think this will be one of the best fights we’ll see at UFC 74.”

Tickets for UFC 74: RESPECT are on sale now and are priced at $800, $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50. Tickets will be sold at any Mandalay Bay box office and all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (Smith’s Food and Drug Centers, Macy’s stores and Ritmo Latino). Roger “El Matador” Huerta overcame a harrowing upbringing in Mexico, El Salvador, and Texas before finding wrestling in high school. That sport set his life on a positive path that would eventually lead him into mixed martial arts and eventually to the UFC. With a 4-0 record in the Octagon™, Huerta holds a convincing decision victory over Jason Dent at UFC 63 and a 19-second victory over John Halverson at UFC 67. He also won a decision over Leonard Garcia at UFC 69 in a three round battle that was honored as UFC’s “Fight of the Night.” A split-second moment of this fight was also captured by Sports Illustrated and became the magazine’s first ever cover of a UFC fighter.

In his most recent fight, Huerta took on Doug Evans, a state wrestling champion fighting out of Alaska. Evans showed his grappling and wrestling expertise in the first round, but Huerta bounced back in the second round and dominated Evans on the ground, unleashing a barrage of strikes until the referee called a stop to the fight.

Huerta is excited to get back in the Octagon and to fight at UFC 74.

“I am honored to be part of this great fight card. I can tell you without a doubt that you will see a Roger that you have not seen before,” said Huerta. “I will be faster, stronger, and more explosive than ever. I feel hungrier than ever and I will dedicate this fight to all of the UFC fans who have supported me. I wish the best to my opponent, and I look forward to fighting him August 25.”

Alberto Crane has a perfect 8-0 record. A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist, seven of his eight victories have been by submission. Alberto is very excited about his UFC debut, and he is certain he will stop Huerta’s win streak at UFC 74.

“Fighting in the UFC is a dream come true,” said Crane. “I have always wanted to fight in the UFC and I am grateful to finally have the opportunity to show what I can do. The only thing I have to say to Roger is ‘let’s bring it’ and give the fans a good show.”

Huerta vs. Crane is on the main card and will be broadcast on PPV. For more information about UFC 74 or any upcoming UFC event, visit www.ufc.com or uk.ufc.com. SHOWTIME TO DEBUT NEW MIXED MARTIAL ARTS SERIES
ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series

Series Premiere Friday, July 27, Live at 11 p.m. ET/PT (except on West Coast)

NEW YORK (July 19, 2007) – Showtime Networks Inc. and mixed martial arts organization EliteXC officially announced today the debut of a new series on the premium television network, ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series. The series will premiere live on Friday, July 27 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast), from Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif.

Following the successful model of the network’s critically acclaimed, prospect-oriented boxing series ShoBox: The New Generation, ShoXC will put talented, up-and-coming fighters on the fast track to stardom. The mission of the series is to pit young fighters against quality opposition in tough, crowd-pleasing and competitive matches.

“This network and our partners at EliteXC have made a long-term commitment to developing the sport of professional mixed martial arts,” said Ken Hershman, senior vice president and general manager, Showtime Sports & Event Programming. “ShoXC is one of the most important components to that development. Now, young fighters will have an elite proving ground to showcase their talents on national television. In addition, the fans now can track MMA’s future stars as they develop their fighting style and skills.”

ShoXC will air regularly on Saturday nights—following the Friday premiere—and will feature fighters from all over the world. In the debut episode, matches will take place in a 20’ x 22’ foot hexagon cage. MMA fights on other ShoXC telecasts may take place in a cage or a ring.

“‘ShoBox’ is a truly unique, one-of-a-kind series for the true boxing fan,” added Hershman. “’ShoBox’ has introduced fans to many of today’s top fighters, including more than 15 current world champions. We expect the same kind of success stories to come out of ShoXC.”

-Royce Gracie did not appeal a failed drug test result administered and
released by the CSAC. As a result Gracie is suspended for one year and
can not fight for any promotion licensed by the California State
Athletic Commission. Royce issued a response stating why he did not
appeal the findings of the commission.

"I did not appeal the decision because I have been in Spain for the
last 1 ½ [months] on vacation with my family, and for me to appeal, I
would have to get a lawyer, and then get some experts to run tests and
then get more experts to argue with their experts, or I can just pay
$2500 fine, and sit out for one year. Well, I fight once a year anyway
and it's much cheaper to pay $2500 in fine then $10,000 retainer to
attorneys alone. As for my fans, those who believe me, believe me
anyway, and those who don't, does not matter what I do, or what I say,
they will not believe anyway."

Royce tested positive for nandrolone, an anabolic steroid following his
victory over Kazushi Sakuraba at the K1 Dynamite USA event on June 2nd
at the LA Coliseum and subsequently was suspended for one year and
fined $2,500.00.

-Shogun Rua confirmed to graciemag.com he is fighting Forrest Griffin

deficient on the ground."

Rua went on to say he was extremely well treated by the executives of
the American organization (UFC), a treatment superior of what he was
accustomed to in years of Pride. The UFC not officially announced
Shogun Rua vs. Forrest Griffin yet.
