Another Indon boxing death
From correspondents in Jakarta
February 7, 2003

A YOUNG Indonesian boxer has died two days after being knocked out in a fight, adding to an alarming death toll from the sport in the country.

Yohanes Fransiscus, 20, died in hospital of a brain haemorrhage on Thursday night after being unconscious for two days, today's Koran Tempo daily said.

Fransiscus lost by a technical knock-out to another Indonesian boxer, Slamet Nizar, in a junior flyweight bout broadcast live by local television on Tuesday night.

In 2001 three Indonesian boxers died within eight months and 13 boxers have died after fights since 1984.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has expressed concern over poorly organised contests in Indonesia, resulting in a high number of post-fight deaths. In 2001 it imposed a six-month ban on Indonesia.

Ring organisers have been blamed particularly for negligence in following medical regulations.

Boxing is one of the most popular sports among Indonesia's 212 million people.
