WMC Update November 2006.

October and November were packed months for WMC federations around the globe. It’s been 11 years now since the WMC was established under the Thai government as the authoritative sanctioning body for promoting and developing MuayThai.

Title fights and thrilling events provided a real treat for MuayThai fans everywhere. Some of the highlights were……

WMC Female Intercontinental Title, Japan.
The month kicked off to a great start with Gracyer Aki , Japan taking on Wendy Miranda, Australia for the 52.1 kgs WMC title. This was an exciting battle with both boxers really giving it their all – Aki took the title on a close points decision.

WMC I-1 , Hong Kong
8 boxers , one belt – the Super-8 tournaments are always a great draw , you never know what can happen over 9 gruelling rounds. Abbas Ahmadi , Andre Kuebin, Beni Ritter, Jaime Luengas, Daniel Mashamaite , Rudolf Durcia, Santichai , Tsang Hoi Kwan - anyone could have taken the title. Some really great fights with Andrei taking the belt in a close final battle.
There was also a great women’s fight between Sunny Coelst and Wong Chi Shan which Sunny won.

SukOneSongchai Stadium, Bangkok.
Another great international fight recently saw Milja Heino, Finland the IFMA Gold medallist taking on Ying Tip, ROR Ubon at the new Songchai stadium in Bangkok – Milja winning on points. This stadium is set to become an exciting part of the Bangkok fight scene !


Singapore MuayThai Festival
The AMAS celebrated the opening of their new headoffices with a 2-day festival of professional and amateur fights. A MuayThai Against Drugs belt was up for grabs in the 4-Man eliminator with Wong Lei Bia, Nick Tan, Louis Wong and Corey Gwaliasi battling it out , Corey taking the belt home. Zach B , Singapore had great fight against an Australian opponent with some Thai fighters, Simon Hughes and Gabriel Rossi rounding out the opposition for Singapore. Liz Lonstrom , Singapore and Jennifer , New Zealand were the female representatives at the festival – evenly matched !

Thai team travels to France
The FFMDA put on a thrilling night of fights as part of the Thai Festival in Paris. Yokpetch Kiatpransanchai, Samingaek Kiatprasanchai, Nguen Windy, Narongnoi Kor Kiattisak and Suthichai Windy travelled over to compete against some of France’s best - Pascal Benmati , IFMA World Champion, Mehdi Zatout , IFMA silver medallist, Redoaune Ameur, Amadou Ba , Raouf Beliouz and WMC European Champion Sedone Vatsana. A really great night for MuayThai with that traditional Franco-Thai rivalry really spicing up the night !

Australian MuayThai Feast
There were so many high-quality shows in Australia last month – Tenille May, Au took on Karen Lynch, NZ in an explosive battle on the NoEscape show, Adelaide which May won on points. Sydney played host to Adrenalin , a great night with fighters from all over Australia including the 2 local women Asha Ingegneri and Leonie Macks. The BruteForce team in Melbourne brought international stars Vuttichai Jeansiri , Thailand and Sone Vanathy , NZ to the ring against Soren Mongkongthong and Joel Fisher , Australia. Finally War on the Shore 6 saw a dramatic rematch between Densiam Logbrapat, Thailand and Aaron Leigh – a close fight which Densiam took on points – in spite of Leigh breaking his wrist in the 4th round !

Macau - WMC World Titles
Macau will be the setting for the Indoor Asian Games in 2007 – the WMC are planning a series of events there to boost the popularity of MuayThai in the runup to the Games. This event, in cooperation with Xplosion productions and hosted by the Hong Kong and Macau MuayThai Associations was an action-packed night. Two WMC world titles were on offer – Nathan Corbett put his Cruiserweight title on the line against Clifton Brown – this was a ferocious and intense battle with Corbett retaining his title. The SuperHeavy weight title was put up between Paul Slowinski and Xhavit Bajrami , this went the distance with Slowinski taking the World title on points. Joey Lee added another victory to her ever-improving record.

Russia takes on Thailand.
A strong Thai team travelled to Russia to take on the new powerhouse ( Russia having won the IFMA Championships 2006 ) in professional fights. This was a thrilling event – full report on the WMC site.

WMC S-1 Slovenia.
This was the first time that this particular event came to Slovenia – and what a night it was. The following 8 boxers from all over Europe battled it out - Igor Vrban (Slovenia), Sanel Musliæ (Croatia), Romas Klimavicius (Lithuania), Dennis Schneidmiller (Germany), Mirko Vorkapic (Slovenia), Robert Van De Heuvel, Davide Canchiarella (Italy) and Petr Brzobohaty (Czech republic). After some dramatic action, Mirko Vorapic took the final victory over Schneidmiller from Germany.

WMC Super-8 Germany
This SuperHeavy weight tournament was held to chose a boxer to represent Germany at the WMC show to be held in honour of HRH, the King of Thailand’s birthday on the 4th and 5th of December in Bangkok. The following 8 German boxers came to the ring for this great honour: Mirkovic, Dolch, Seeburger, Amend, Zizer , Outris, Philips, Hadzric. A really exciting night’s boxing for the fans – with the final bout Vukota Mirkovic and James Philipps – Mirkovic winning with an elbow TKO.

WMC IFMA Showdown in Croatia.
A carefully selected team of Thai amateur boxers – male and female travelled to Croatia recently for a 1-day amateur tournament. This was the first time that such an event took place, with many close and exciting fights taking place under IFMA rules.

Still to come !
Stockholm, Sweden will be the scene for the WMC World Title fight between Pernilla Johansson , Sweden and Sindy Marcic, Australia as well as Ole Larsen taking on Buakaw Por Pramuk on the 24th.
Evolution 9 in Australia will see Bruce Preacher MacFie stepping up for a rematch with John Wayne Parr on the 25th.
Canadian MuayThai fans will be treated to another night of amateur Muaythai action with the H2H event in Calgary – Sandra Bastian will take on Natalie Yip as well as an international 4-man tournament at 80kgs.

Then, we are on the countdown the to HRH, the King of Thailand’s birthday with an 2-day festival extravaganza of fights planned by the WMC with SukOneSongchai for the 4th and 5th of December. There will be the WMC Super-8 Superheavyweight , S-1 at 72kgs and a packed card of over 50 fights including WMC titles. Some of these fights will match the toughest foreigners against the best of Thailand in a dramatic show-down based on the WMC World Rankings. For the first time ever, there will be a Miss World MuayThai and also a display of MuayThai aerobics from the world Champions Hong Kong.

Not to mention the many WMC shows taking place around the world in honour of HRH’s birthday – Czech Republic, England, Ireland, Australia , France and many many more.
