View Full Version : PRIDE vs UFC
Out of Pride and UFC which do you think has the better fights and or fighters?? I watched some DVD's on the weekend and it seems that pride may be a little more intense. What do you guys think?

I like Pride better because you see Asians actually winning sometimes.
Growing up in the country we only had the old UFC's available and I got sick of seeing the Asian fighters lose all the time.

Pride has the better fighters by far IMO. I think UFC slightly better market their fighters. Although the reality show has brought in alot of new audience for the ufc and more $$$, i think for the diehard fans we are seeing less attractive overall cards because they are using these TUF fighters alot.

Pride is alot better and has better quality fighters. Wanderlei Silva, crocop, mintauro, rampage - they would all destroy in the ufc. Pride fighters get paid alot more aswell and its massive in Japan. The japanese priminister even reffered to croatia as crocop land when they played them in soccer.

I like both pride and ufc. Both have there individual appealing merits but Pride definatley has the better fighters at the moment, it has been established as the Best MMA competition for a lot longer than UFC. UFC has only really been making waves since TUF season which has opened up a whole new fan base. In time i'd imagine UFC will be more competetive, with new fighters striving for their piece of the action which should, in theory, make more talented fighters.

Soccer kicks and stomps to downed people make for good viewing. Elbows on the ground don't really compare.

What are the major rule differences? In UFC there are heaps of elbows

In Pride you can kick and knee an opponent on the ground. Eg. Wanderlei Silva's stomping on Kondo or soccer kicking Fujita. But in Pride no elbows are allowed period.
In UFC elbows are allowed standing or on the ground but no kicks to opponents on the ground.

Something interesting to note is that prior to Final Conflict 2003, the general consesus was that no elbows were allowed. However, after Rampage relentlessly elbowed the crap out of Liddell's body in their Semi-Final bout and was never called for it, more and more people are elbowing the body and getting away with it. As far as I know, Pride have never announced a rule change allowing this.
An interesting phenomenon ...

Does anybody know if there is an organisation that allows the best of both worlds; elbows and knees to a downed opponent as well as stomps and soccer kicks?? I prefer Pride to UFC, but they should really allow the use of elbows.

Actually, elbows are not allowed in Pride OR the UFC.
You'll get deducted points and then disqualified if you strike with the point of the elbow in either competition. Both organisations get around this though, by allowing "Fore-arm" strikes, instead. Which is the exact same thing as an elbow strike, but you just cant motion an elbow strike at your opponent from above them.
"Fore-arm" strikes like this are OK: http://www.prokick.com/archive/kbm3/graphics/results/billy_elbow_strike.jpg
Downward "Elbow" strikes like this are not ok: http://images.google.com/url?q=http://www.mastersken.com/acatalog/downward_elbow.jpg&sig=__0namVK8yPsjTABkdceEL9sRpC6s=
It sounds completely retarded, and it is. Big John McCarthy warned one of the UFC fighters about it just 2 UFC's ago & A.Overeem and W.Silva have both been warned about doing it in Pride. Listen to the UFC commentary and you'll laugh your ass off as Golberg blabbers on and on about "Vicious forearms" from Tito Ortiz, as he rails the **** out of his opponents with massive elbows from the guard-top & mount positions.
As for who's the better event........... well, there's not even any contest between them. Pride has the better fighters, better fight's, better organisation, shows more fight's per PPV and in a lesser amount of time, they have better commentators, better DVD's, better recruitment of fighters from all over the world & they even have by far the better referee's and a better scoring system.
Having said all that though, Shooto and ZST in Japan are more entertaining MMA event's to watch than either the UFC or PrideFC. For that matter, "It's Showtime" from Holland is even better than all those i just mentioned, as it has K-1, MMA & MuayThai superfight's on all it's promotions, along with about 16+ fight's inside a 4-hour pay-per-view. Watching guys from Golden Glory, Russian Top Team & Red Devil Fight Club hammer it out over MMA, MuayThai & K-1 fight's is truly a sight to behold - not to mention K-1 fighters like Hoost/Leko/Aerts/Schilt etc... all fighting on the same card.

Man that was awesome, pride seems more intense and frantic and agressive. UFC they get into the same position on the ground every time and then thats it
