I am a beginner and currently training 4-5 days (most days a run in the morning / work /then pads bags etc..)aiming to have my first fight at the end of this year. But i work in a kitchen and spend a lot of time standing after my runs - which seems to give me a lot of soreness in my goin/hip area...can anyone recommend a program or book? or is yoga a good alternative to my current streching routine?

Any advice would be great

Ron here....Get yourself some skins from Rebel or any sports store and stretch stretch and stretch. When ur watching tv, when ur in bed, when u have a spare 10 seconds. Go and see a physio and get them to show you some good neural stretches and grab a mate and do some PNF stretching

Just stretch after every thing you do, a guy I trained used to whinge to me that he had no time to stretch I asked him if he had time to clean his teeth morning and night and he said yes but thats different I need to do that!!!! I rest my case!!

Don't take a knife to a gun fight! So train harder than the next guy

Thomas Kurz' book Stretching Scientifically gives excellent results if you follow it appropriately. Stick with it, it's great. I got mine years ago through Blitz magazine when I didn't have time to make it to the gym. There is also a video available, and there is no need for partners, in fact, it discourages the use of partners as it alleges they increase the risk of injury.

Hi Guys and Girls

supermario, bro,
Kurz book and method is all conceptual and nothing proven. His methods are no different than common sport knowledge and his excuses for things are un educated and frankly crap!

If you want to do added research and want to invest in a decent book I suggest getting "Science of Flexibility, 3rd ed. by Alter and Human Kinetics. There is no rubbish about Secrets of Eastern Europe or in 6 weeks you will be super flexible yet we have no one else who has ever done it unless they were already super flexible.

Gards30, do what Ron said and see a Physio or a decent sport coach and do this in this order.

Glutes and outter hip, calves, hamstrings, groin, hip flexors and then quads for your legs. Finish each body part before moving onto the next and do each as (relax and hold fpr 10 seconds, release for 10 seconds then stretch and hold relaxed for a further 10 seconds then release nd do this again. After you have done this 3 times do a fourth stretch but use a standard PNF style of tence the stretched muscle for 5 seconds, then tence the opposing muscle for 5 seconds followed by tencing the stretched muscle again for 5 seconds then increase and hold relaxed for 10 to 30 seconds. Holding a stretch for longer than 30 seconds is of absolutly no use and shows no significant increase from just holding for 30.

Stretch relaxed every day and do the final PNF approach every second day. This is no (in two months you can chew your own toe nails, from behind), this is practical and it works. In Thai bxing we need good flexibility and the main area to focus is often over looked and thats the inner hips.

Hope this helps but try and stay away from the secrets of The former soviet union or east Bloc coutries secrets that have absolutly no evidence supporting their theories.

Really?? I assumed it was good. I didn't read the whole book because being 15 at the time, the theory went over my head, so I just stuck to doing the dynamic and relaxed stretching exercises on a daily basis, and it worked just fine for me. I thought it didn't work in whatever timeframe it claimed to, 6 or 8 weeks, because I wasn't doing it properly, but in about six or so months I was one flexible little Latino. I guess that means if I tried the same thing now I'd get nowhere seeing as I'm closing on 30. And I was seriously considering it. Thanks for recommending that book though Kiwi Sting, I'll definitely look it up.

I've had Thomaz Kurz's video for years and I thought I was just made of wood or perhaps I wasnt doing it right but I cant kick above the ribs!! Seriously the vid is not that bad I'm sure if I put a few more hours effort into it I'd be ok in six months like he promises
