Green: Everyone wants me to KO Mundine

DANNY GREEN continued his relentless march toward a multi-million dollar fight with arch rival Anthony Mundine by knocking out Bradley Mayo in one round of their super-middleweight fight on the Tszyu-Leija undercard at Telstra Dome yesterday.

Mayo, a former Australian middleweight champion, had gone 10 rounds with Mundine in Townsville last year but crashed to the canvas after Green landed a thumping left hook late in the opening round. His corner threw in the towel.

"Danny definitely has the punching power to beat Mundine," Mayo said. "And it would be a great fight to see.

"He is a tremendous puncher and he just caught me with a great shot today."

Green had been hoping for a win inside the distance to overshadow Mundine's points victory but it came even faster than expected as the 2000 Olympian stalked his man relentlessly before unloading the heavy punches.

"I know I can beat Mundine," Green said.

"He talks a great fight but the only time he's ever been tested he was knocked out by Sven Ottke, one of the lightest punching world champs of all time.

"Everyone in Australia wants me to knock out The Mouth and I'll fight him anywhere, anytime. He just has to say the word."

Yesterday's win was Green's 14th pro victory and all have come by knockout.

Mayo protested that he could have continued after his corner threw in the towel but he was obviously unsteady on his feet as he tried to clear his head from the devastating effects of the left hook.

Mundine's manager Khoder Nasser was in Melbourne to see the fight and has been negotiating a deal with Green's trainer Jeff Fenech but the fight has stalled over money disputes.

Mundine, who wants to promote the bout, says he will pay Green no more than $100,000 which is the same purse Green received to stop hapless Indonesian Nico Toriri in Perth in November.

Green wants $250,000 and Fenech says that is more than fair considering Mundine stands to earn more than $1million from the deal.

"If he doesn't pay us a fair purse it just means Mundine isn't serious about a fight that all of Australia wants to see," Fenech said.

Green received support in his quest to beat Mundine from world-rated light-heavyweight Paul Briggs, who had another big hitter - Mark Philippoussis - in his dressing room, before knocking out American Brad McNeil in one round.

"I think Danny Green would knock out Mundine in about three rounds," Briggs said.

Green had dominated Briggs in a torrid sparring session in Sydney two weeks ago and Briggs said Green hits far too hard for Mundine's fragile defence.

Fenech said he believed a Mundine-Green fight would draw 20,000 people to Perth's Subiaco Oval.

"Danny is the best super-middleweight in Australia," Fenech said.

"Everyone knows it is just a matter of knocking Mundine out to make if official."

Green's devastating performance stunned top America fight commentator Bob Sheridan, who has called more than 700 world title bouts but was amazed at what he saw yesterday.

"Mundine-Green would be one hell of a fight," Sheridan said. "Green is a spectacular fighter and Mundine has world-class speed and skills."

In other undercard fights yesterday, trainer Johnny Lewis's world-rated junior-lightweight Gairy St Clair stopped Indonesian Reo Saragh in the first round.

Fenech's world-rated super-bantamweight Nedal Hussein stopped Samson Elnino, in three. Uzbekistan's light-middleweight slugger Kuna Toygonbaev scored a seventh-round stoppage of Panama's Alfonso Mosquera. And Mohammad Abdullaev beat Philip Holiday in four.
