Drugs in the Sport

How much of a part do drugs play in our sport today?

I can't comprehend why there is no drug testing in our sport, especially at the professional level.

There has been comments made that fighters are getting shots of adrenaline, doing lines of cocaine and speed prior to fights and even during the fight (sniffing speed from a towel at round breaks).

Please give your comments.

I should make one thing clear, please do not mention any names or alias's just your opinion on how you think drugs have effected the sport.

I really don't think its that widespread, I personally think drug testing should be compulsory especially for performance enhancing drugs like steroids. Personally I think there would be a fair few fighters experimenting in steroids. At the end of the day steroids cannot make you a better fighter just a bigger loser.

True, but in reality if you stack steroids correctly you can get significant upgrades to your stamina and strength compared to a natural fighter. Drug testing should be mandatory.

Speed or coke would trash your late round stamina to pieces, and would be flat out dangerous to fight while on them.

I also believe there should be compulsory drug testing in this sport. I think there will be someone who wants to win that badly, that they resort to drug use to gain an unfair advantage. Naming no names, I recall reading a small article in the herald sun newspaper about a year or two ago, about a relatively well known and successfull active melbourne kickboxer, who was charged by police for importing 12kgs of steroids off the internet!!! This would have not only reflected badly on the person, but his gym also(that amount of "gear" would surely be for use for more than one person). "Drugs are bad, OK!"

Don't mean to sound so pessimistic, but I doubt anyone cares enough to front the costs.

Why shouldn't the the Martial Arts board contribute, In boxing there are always spot checks for drug testing and even more so on a professional level.

Who pays for the boxing drug testing??

I just don't think anyone other than us care about the sport of Kickboxing. By that I mean I'm sure the Martial Arts board would love to do more to administer such stuff, but I just don't think the people who fund them know that Kickboxing exists outside of movies.

How often do Boxers get tested?

I believe all Title fights for professionals are tested and random checks in the amuture division.

I understand your point and do agree with you. I am more so trying to get people's opinions on how they think drugs have effected the sport.

guys if any of u were to know none of these drugs mentioned here could really help if anything they would minimise ur chances of even getting past the 2nd or 3rd round speed and cocaine dehidrate and only give u and explosive burst for alittle then ur stuffed so its really a benefit if u use it in a brawl at a club with mates where the fight will be over in a few minutes! as for steroids well all it does is put fluid in ur muscles if u look for example im not pointing the fingure but a certain fighter in the k-1 gp 170 kg built like a house! who makes goldburg look like poppa smurf cant even take 4 or 5 leg kicks to his thigh!so i would agree to testing but at a professional level if u only knew what all our aussie fighters go through for their training u'd know that they dont even need these drugs as it would pull them down and not give an advantage as some have mentioned as for those who take adrenalin shots well if u dont have it naturally why r u even getting in the ring?

Adreneline shots before a fight? I think whoever is doing that is not really helping themselves adreneline is used to stop bleeding in cuts I think you may have its use mixed up. Injecting adreneline will make you giddy nervous and nouseus. As for drug testing a standard test for por steriods is excess of $300 a go i dont think anyone wants to foot that bill. Drug use in sport is far more wide spread than any of us may believe, and as many ways there are to test for drugs there are twice as many ways to beat the tests. Everyone seems to mention bob sapp when steriods and k1 are brought up but how many of you believe Lebanners physique is all natural? And what about Ozkan 20kg in a couple of months up and down like a yoyo lets perspective her drugs are a part of sport now like it or not.....

i think Big Jeff has a point the cost involed in testing all the fighters would be to much. I think that drugs are part of the sport now.
as for sapp only being able to cop a few leg kicks, i don't think it was because of steriods, just lack of conditioning.

13 kgs of lean mass that equates to about twenty percent of his total body mass this i would think is not possible with out help of some kind. Even with four months of wieght training. These type of results are what body builder dream of with their injectable suplements!

To me it is obvious that many fighters use steroids and Adrenilin. I know of one fighter who has used speed before a fight. I dont know Gurkan personaly but believe that he would use substances such as steroids and growth hormones. I notice the way he is chewing on his mouth guard before he fights!

matt if u notice the mouth gaurd chewing it is to get the jaw muscles moving and blood flowing try it u may feel something!if u notice after he chews he gives either side of his jaw a wack with his gloves.
when u fight do u fight with ur mouth open or closed? chewing strengthens jaw muscles

Steriods are legal in Japan, hence there will never be testing in K1.
K1 is more like WWF anyhow, Muay Thai boxing is what we want to see!

You guys that havent been to K1 Japan have no idea so pls just read sensibly or dont post.Fact last time i fought in Japan April 15th 2001 they make you do a piss test before your fight and straight after your fight.infact they are so strict,one of the officals acctually followed me in to the cubicles,it was uncomfortable feeling so i pissed on the guys leg so he can give me some room,but thats how stricked it was,i cant speak on there behalf now days,it has changed.And for the record i have a photo of my self at 18 years of age,that i will bring with me to the wiegh in if not at the fight 17th feb and personaly give it to Paul cavka to put it on the net so for once and for all you can all see i have had the same frign size build natually for the last 15 years,i have all ways sat,at or on 83-86kg,and had to diet down to 76-78 kgs.So from 86kg onwards all i had to put on was 6 measly kilos.I ate 10 eggs,6 bannanas,bread,pasta,and patatoes evrey two hours,from 6am,to 10.30pm,and 3 huge protein shakes.Then lifting wieghts 4 times a week,not in 4months,but all up in 7weeks,then for the daniel tia fight i did it in reverse,16 kilos in 5 weeks,thats why i was looking at the corner to see how long to go in the round,cause i lost to much weight to quickly i had no energy,and a dead line to meet so i could fight for you guys,but no one appreciates it.The name of the fight with Stan NO RESPECT,is not cause of stan,its because that is exactly what i dont get NO respect.But it dont worry me to much i dont have that much money or other things people put before more important things ,but i have the most important thing in this world and that is my self respect..Gurkan ozkan

You have to remember that no one here speaks for the spectators.

If you 'Had no Respect', you wouldn't draw the largest crowd numbers we see in Melbourne.

Throughout history in all sporting and even artistic endeavours, there allways seems to be a huge difference in oppinion between insider critics and that of the people. Just life I guess.

Pete M,i dont think past stan at this stage,how ever since you took the time to ask,i had a few minuets to think about it and i came up with a few.Paul slowinski,is a young up and comer and if the fans want it then so be,but i will only fight him on one condition,and that is full thia rules elbow and knees.Only cause i dont have time to beat him under kickboxing,or k1 rules due to the fact that deosent matter who i fight or beat,my critics allways find away of puting a damper on my achievments,so no disrespect to paul s,or any other fighter,but the first thing they will say is after the fight with solovinski is,but he would smash you with elbows,if its not k1,yeh but with knees he would ko you.so there for,if his or anyone of my opponents have a strong point i will give them the opportunity to bring it to the ring so there is no hard feelings.when i fought John hallford nov 1999 we boxed,but at that stage i was only boxing till the end of the year and tarik never came back to me and said they want to kickbox,it was only after my victory against John,at the after party at crown casino he said to me,Gurkan next time will do it full contact legs and all,and i responded love to and im still waiting for that to happen and i really cant wait for that one as well.A quick one about Stan the man one,Tarik ask me yes or no and i said yes,i said what rules and he said k1 5x3,and i said no problems,how ever the next day a change of plans on Stans behalf,they want 10x2 kickboxing rules,maybe to test me so,i said to tarik cool why dont we make it 12 rounds,but they were confident on 10x2,but at this stage all i say is bring it all on..Gurkan ozkan
