I was disappointed that we could not get the win against Italy, but they deserved the win, best D in the world, it is true. They conceed only an own goal which no keeper would have saved, and recovered from a dubious penalty kick when most teams would have crumbled. That was not a penalty - it was the worst penalty decision in entire tournament, especially given the magnitude of such a game, those mistakes should not be tolerated (but me still happy that Zizou converted it). And yes, he was silly for doing what he did, but I thank our homeland that she produced a spec player like Zizou.

Still, we outplayed them in the 2nd half, but came up short on penalty kick. Our kicking was good but Trez did not convert. Not his fault, those are the brakes.

Cheers all and sorry not on topic, but a sporting event like that must warrant some due!!! I am aware of SI Forum, but no-one visit it much.

Forza Italia!

The best team of the tournament won the final and deservedly so. Rock solid defence that could not be bridged in open play and a brilliant team effort. It seems that major tournament wins these days are relying more on team efforts that individual star efforts. I mean, look at Greece 2004, Brazil 2002, and now Italy 2006... devoid of the single stand-out stars such as Maradona in 86, Rossi in 82 but gelling well as a team.

That Zidane got voted Player of the Tournament ahead of Cannavaro is rubbish in my opinion. Cannavaro was virtually flawless for the entire tournament. The backbone of this Italian team was Cannavaro, Buffon and Pirlo, who time and time again cut apart opposition with his pinpoint ball placement and goal-making passes and set pieces (semi final goal for Grosso, final goal for Materazzi).

IMO the best match of the tournament was Italy vs Germany in the semi final. A real ripper. Probably the best pure football team was Argentina, but they didn't have the defensive capabilities to close down opponents. The biggest pretenders were England who were terrible to watch. The biggest disappointment was Brazil. The biggest surprise packet was Australia getting out of the group stage.

BTW... bumped into old forum member JANER in Lygon Street while watching the match on the big screens! Great to see him again!

The Italy-Germany semi-final was the best game of the tournament, 2 of the best goals in the entire tournament in the dying minutes of extra time, but my favourite for pure emotion was Australia-Japan. I think if Australia had beaten Italy, they would've beaten Ukraine, but not Germany. Socceroos did well anyway, good on them. Soccer-who??SOCCEROOS *****! Brazil & Argentina, whom I tipped to meet in the final, were the biggest disappointments of the entire tournament, and got their asses handed to them. Portugal are a good team, I'm a big Luis Figo fan, he's an ankle breaker, and Zidane was awesome until the final 10 minutes of his career. Thierry Henry surprised me and played well throughout the tournament. I still can't believe the 2 Ronis sucked as much ass as they did. Well done Azurri.

As much as I would like to say we outplay Italy in all games, we did not. Neither did Australia.

Australia could not put Italy away with man adavantage so not deserving in end, simply put. Although would be great to have seen them go further too.

France - we did not play better than Italy. Yes, we did beat Portugal, Spain and Brazil, but Brazil were not solid defencively, nor as a UNIT. Spain were good, but not good enough. Portugal had some problems but proved a good team.

Italy were total package, and hate to say it, as much as would have liked to see those guys who typically whine and worry about their hair get ko'd, they played awesome this time around and collectively, were unstoppable. No team can play 7 good teams and not conceed by opposition foot or head in non-fouling circumstances, but blue team did it.

And if you say Ukraine, Ghana and U.S are crap, you do not know football. Ukraine would have been HEAVY fav's over Aus pre-tournie, and I would have to say so would the other 2. Not to say Australia would have lost, but they would not have beaten Italy anyway based on Italy ability to deal with offence (which by Aussie was not good enough until 94 mins) and Italy having best goal keep in world who more than competant in spot kick D.

Anyway, heaps varying opinions, all good, at least sport getting more exposure, but do not like people who are not followers of the actual sport, but rather the nation themselves. All good to support your country, but if not understand game do not jump on bandwagon and make silly comment (not intended to anyone on forum though, just saying my point). best team won, --- unfortunately

Zizou was silly, although reputation can not be devoid based on that one incident.

Hi chaps, just got back after a month in Germany. What a trip, brilliant.
There is absolutely no sporting event anywhere in the world that rivals even the group stage games for hype, excitement and pre/post match partying. (sorry Snip, your bledisloe ranks somewhere near Tunisia vs Saudi Arabia for care factor )

Basically agree with most of what Shiv and Glass said (though Shiv by heritage is very partial to those hair-****ing diving I-ties ).

My vote for Player of the Tourney was Buffon. Odd perhaps naming a keeper but the guy was clearing certain goals with his fingertips and big toe alike. Lucas Neill was awesome for Australia and it was very sad when Grosso the Diver robbed him and Australia of a chance to progress to the QF.

Biggest disappointments of the whole world cup were;
i) refereeing. It seemed almost an early conspiracy to protect the bigger teams from rough play to the point where the game turned into handbags at 10 paces. No contact was tolerated and the diving nations exploited this.

ii) Diving. I-ties, Argies, Brasilians, Portuguese. Dreadful. Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the top players of the tourney yet displayed some of the worst dives. Always seems to be the Latino teams. FIFA had an opportunity to stamp it out this WC and failed.

iii) new bandwagon 'soccer' fans
Daryl Somers, Ray Martin, Peter Fitzsimons, Footy Show w@nkers (both AFL and Leagies) etc etc. Yep, they all showed up in droves, even some fools wearing Bulldogs and St Kilda jerseys to the Brasil game. Everyone wants to get on board.

Best team: Yes, I guess the best team overall were the Italians who functioned very well as a unit, esp in defence. I still cringe when I watch that fag Totti. He is basically useless thesedays but always seems to pop up to take the glory. Cannavaro was brilliant, no doubting. I thought the Argies were red hot, as were the Germans but both showed their form early and did not rise under pressure. Italy vs France was the best combo for the final and either could have grabbed it. That penalty against Materazzi was touch and go but there was another incident shortly after that certainly was and was not given so perhaps that balanced out. I cannot fathom any Italians arguing against that decision when they gladly claimed Grosso's air swing to knock the Aussies out.

I was at all the Aussie games, QF1 and SF2. Watching Germany beat the Argies on penalties in front of 70,000 at Berlin stadium was unbelievable(this was the one which has the staircase at one end where Hitler was at the Olympics and the old seig heil erupted). There must have been 1,000,000 Germans in party mode throughout the whole night in the city.

The best supported teams (other than Germany) were Australia and England. We had some great chants going and made lots of noise. DownUnder and AC/DC after our games was reminiscent of when we beat the Uries in Sydney last year...everyone stayed for 30-60mins in the stadiums. I estimate 50,000 Aussies over there and the Germans adopted us as their second team. In Kaiserslautern, where we played twice, the mayor was seen crying in the town square where we were all drinking after the game because we had lost. As one German said, 'where the Aussie are, the party happens'. No trouble, everyone enjoying themselves. (take note Poms). Their form of support was largely drinking as much piss as possible, revealing fat, white guts and then fighting with the locals (and being promptly arrested which was good to see).

I disagree Glass Jaw. The USA are absolute rubbish. Their FIFA ranking in the top 10 is ludicrous and finishing last in their stage was spot on. Their fool of a coach said before the WC that Australia were only there to make up the numbers. Their confederation gets 3.5 spots which is bollocks as there are no other decent teams other than them and Mexico. Another FIFA disgrace.

Sad that it is over, Germany is a beautiful green country and the Germans were fantastic. Had some great nights out with supporters from many countries. Croatia, Brasil, Germany and Swedes.

Thoroughly recommend to people to visit Munich and Berlin in particular. Sightseeing-wise, intact concentration camps (an extremely moving experience), communist influence in Berlin (including checkpoint Charlie and the 'wall'). The old Nazi structures (which survived the bombings) were gradiose and foreboding.

Oh, and England?? 2010 lads, it will be coming home for sure !

Your right about people jumping on the bandwagon and supporting soccer because Australia were actually participating in the world cup this year... It's good and bad im just happy to see soccer get the credit it deserves (well almost) in this country. Im sick of being fed AFL this AFL that of the news stations on the sports coverage when there is a whole world of sport to report on that Australians are actually playing and doing well in.

Darno maybe its a WA thing, I think the media needs to wake up a little.. AFL hasnt got a huge future outside of Australia, its probably time they tried to stop brainwashing us.. Its not the world game, never will be.

Good to see you back on board Voice... and I know what you mean. People just cant fathom how big the World Cup is until you are there... now you perhaps understand why I keep telling everyone that there is no way Australia can possibly host a World Cup (well not right now). It's just toooooo big. I was at the USA 1994 World Cup and the France 1998 World Cup. Both just outrageously huge events.

I won't get into an argument on the Grosso penalty vs Australia... sure Grosso played it for all it's worth, he "won" the penalty, but there is always the danger of sliding in front of a player who is tearing toward goal that deep into the box for what could be a match-winning goal from open play.

What I will argue is that while most Socceroo fans seem to be pointing the blame solely at the referee and Grosso, why not look at Guus Hiddink's choices... Italy was down to 10 men, Italy was tired, Australia had only played one substitute and what does Guus do? In his most ludicrous decision of Australia's whole campaign, he sits back and waits for extra time and it came back to bite him in the ass! WIth Italy down to 10 men and having used up all their subs, Guus SHOULD HAVE GONE FOR THE KILL and brought on Skoko or Thompson (someone with speed) or even an aerial threat like Kennedy.

Anyway, just my thoughts... the incredibly biased Australian media overlooked this a lot (except Frank Farina did make mention of it in his Herald Sun column).

Yeh, the USA's ranking is absurb... and Bruce Arena was forced to eat some humble pie as his team performed terribly and didn't make it out of the group stage.

For me the Ivory Coast was the best team not to get out of the group stage -- Drogba and co were simply outstanding to watch and if not in the same group as Argentina and Holland may have done a Senegal/Cameroon and caused some real shocks.

In the end the best "team" won I believe. All players contributed well to the team win, led by the irresistable force Cannavaro and the immovable object Buffon.

Yes yes... I'll be basking for the next four years -- I have had to wait since 1982 for this and I was only 7 years old back then!!

No worries Voice,

Yes U.S did not play great, but they are a decent team (pre-tournie anyhow). Australia would beat U.S unless they get their legs broken off as may indicate by some rough house tackling.

Yes, ranking is shamble, but so too would be Mexico and Czech who are two very good teams, but ranked at 3 and 4 which should not be the case, albeit the latter were major threat in many a mind.

Ivory coast was good admin and I suggested they may even get out of group, unlucky, tough group.

Good point by all, happy and surprised to see we made the final this time around, Zizou was good for 3 games, Buffon for all but perhaps not tested enough overall. Cannavaro, Pirlo and even Gattusp and Zambrotta were amazing.

Ronaldo? Well, that was interesting with Rooney

Sorry to hear Gnar_kill!!! No good for you and others to happen.

All in all, what an event, but must say despite some scandals prior to the cup, this was obviously not rigged, and Italy were not the cheaters - refereeing could have been better, but as Admin said, sliding/going to ground in box as one of last men, if not the last in D, and clipping the guy has to warrant some infringement - and I was cheering for my host country of course (Australia). Neil made no attempt to move out of way and even pulled elbow back a little into Grossa. He stated should have been us (Aus) in the final....would not have happened. Italy were robbed too in Sth Korea, and about 4 other tournies...everybody wants them to lose, but good converting by Totti and Grossa under pressure.

Please guys do not bag a country as a whole, not warranted. We are honoured to live in a great nation which provide me at least many opportunity to work and live a good life - plus look at many good kickboxing fight :).

No more opinion from me

.............except France win qualifier in 3 months against Italy

Yes Shiv, agree about Hiddink in the Italy game. Viduka was a slow witches hat and should have been removed for Kennedy or Archie. I spoke with Bernie Mandic (Kewell's manager) after the game and they all thought Kewell had gout! Couldn't even walk! My god, that is a diet thing. I think it was later dispelled from tests.
Another Hid**** doozie was playing Spider Kalac against the Croatians. OMG what was he thinking; Schwarzer had played well in both the previous 2 games! We all said that in the stands even before the game started.

How about old fat Ronaldo. Anyone remember the pisstake when Zizou chipped him and had time to run around to regather on the other side? Like watching the Titanic turn! hehe

Had beers with Farina and Robbie Slater in Frankfurt...the boys were loving it but understandably Frank is a pretty bitter and twisted lad.

Interesting that accomodation EVERYWHERE was a real sh1t fight. There were literally hundreds of thousands of people descending on cities from day to day and many had to stay in neighbouring towns. In Kaiserslautern the population is just 100,000 and the stadium holds 50,000 ! Go figure. So we had to train it from Frankfurt 2 hrs away on the FFA hired 'Aussie Express'. That trip was a highlight of the tour with around 3000 Aussies going nuts on board.

Just on England...what a WC of parallels.
1. In 1998 a young Beckham gets sent off for a silly retaliation against the Argies which sees England out
2. In 2006 Rooney does the same. England lose.
3. In a previous Euro championship England lose on penalties to Portugal
4. Same occurs in 2006.

Now we need to see whether as a result of all this Rooney gets promoted to captain like Beckham did. Becks did f/all this tourney and was replaced by Sven against Portugal (about time too)...funny to see Becks make it look like he was injured!

Ronaldo was poor IMO, nowhere like the force he was. Zizou played to his peak in the latter 2 games, C Ronaldo is a slippery eel and the best running left midfielder in the game.

Talk about last minute turning points. The 3 goals for the Aussies in just 8 mins sent us all nuts. And the Italians pinching the penalty against us in the last minute and 2 against the germans in the final 2 minutes before penalties.
This was my 3rd WC in a row and by far the best. France went nuts in 1998 but this has been the best IMO.

Oh dont get me started on Viduka..
Honestly think he aint that much chop, didnt do anything to overly impress me.. I have memories of a hat-trick with Leeds years ago but nothing else comes straight to mind for positives on the big fella.

It looks like he needs to be fed the ball in the 'right' spot to make anything decent.. similar to Michael Owen.. Not just in this world cup.. Been seeing it for quite a while

I just hope he does something decent again one day to change my views.

Buffon was amazing, he is quality.

admin
13-07-2006, 03:05 PM
I agree Roof.. he has some deft touches but for a guy without injury he doesn't do much more. Six goals in all those internationals is a poor strike rate.

Also Henry didn't impress me much either... he had some great glimpses, such as the first 15 mins of the final when he made those harrowing runs into the Italian box, but once again he fails to score in big matches: Euro 2000 final, Champions League final and now 2006 World Cup final.

As for Brazil: what was Parreira thinking? I am a HUGE Ronaldo fan, but he just didn't bring it, nor did Ronaldinho... why not use Robinho and Cicinho who had ANNIHILATED Argentina in the qualifiers and who can run and are HUNGRY.

Man, if Parreira sat Ronaldo & Ronaldinho out, he's be linched by a mob of Brazilians. They lost with them on the pitch, fans burnt Ronaldinho's statue, but they'll get over it. If they had lost with them on the bench, there would've been riots.

What you have to remember is Australia is kinda short of "Soccer or Rugby" squared ovals that hold 40,000-60,000 people. Having a square pitch in the middle of a AFL ground isnt great viewing for ALL the crowd at the venue.

Think Australia should really look at more Rugby and Soccer driven playing grounds for the future. But as a nation I think we have a good economy and infrastructure to support it.. proven in the Olympics and 2003 Rugby world cup.

admin
14-07-2006, 02:32 PM
The difference is that the Comm Games and the Olympic Games are ONE CITY events... the World Cup is a national event, the whole nation hosts it... plus I can't see how we would fill 64 matches of World Cup soccer nor right now have the venues to host such an event... what venues would you suggest? MCG, Docklands in Melbourne... Stadium Australia, SCG in Sydney... GABBA... WACCA... these would all have to undergo modifications and some major facelifts for several of them.

You cant compare the Olympics or Comm Games to the World Cup... when you see it with your own eyes and be a part of it, you just realise what a monster the World Cup is... and the World Cup IS bigger than the Olympic Games -- more spectators, more television viewers, more cities utilised, etc.

MCG, Telstra Dome - Melbourne
Aussie Stadium, Telstra Stadium, Scg, Sydney
Gabba and were the brocos play - Brisbane
AAMI Stadium - Adelaide
Subiaco - Perth

already 9 venues ive mentioned that can definatly hold a World Cup event plus add another 4 or 5 new ones to be built i dont see why we cant host a World Cup, i recken we can!!!

PS: Looks like former Milan winger and 1990/94 World Cup veteran Donadoni is now the new manager of Italy following Lippi's resignation.

good points both shiv and allanf (being a turk I rate your football opinions higher than your kickboxing ones).
Add also Gosford stadium which could be tweaked to hold 45,000.

Australia could hold the WC by 2014 at a pinch but the problem is that stadiums are huge loss-making white elephants and only with a population of 50,000,000+ is there much chance to recoup one's investment. Look how infrequently Telstra is used in Sydney. That's a lot of real estate sitting idle 95% of the year.
The WC is gigantic and requires huge infrastructure improvements to rail transportation. South Africa in 2010 is a disaster waiting to happen as it is still basically 3rd world when it comes to transportation and accomodation of such magnitude.

The Olympics is a flea circus compared to the WC. How many people go to the rowing, wrestling and table-tennis? Maybe 1000 max? No need to cater for a crowd with events like sailing either. In the WC there are 64 games with between 45,000 - 85,000 in attendence. It is like a travelling circus. Each city experiences 100-150,000 transient supporters week-in, week-out. The mobility of the WC crowds is the huge headache for transportation and hospitality.

Roof, the stadium shape isn't too much of a problem. Remember a football pitch is rectangular not square. A running track means more setback but doesn't create too much of a problem. The last final in Berlin and that in 1998 at the Stade de France both were on circular grounds with running tracks.
That said, a steep rectangular ground like that in Munich basically puts you right on top of the players and is a great experience. Personally I hate the MCG for football as it is so big you lose the ability to get as involved with the players and opposition fans.

And Fuskas don't prove you are a fool by opening your mouth and commenting when you appear to know nothing about the matter. Show a little respect for Shiv, he has done you no wrong.

QLD - Gabba, Suncorp Stadium, QLD Sport n Athletic Centre (Capacity 48,400)
SA - AAMI Stadium, Adelaide Oval
WA - Subiaco, WACA

Thats 14 stadiums...Germany 2006 only had 12. And im sure the government would put in funding to increase capacities in some stadiums and clean them up a bit.

Alan I understand what you're saying but as Neale said, it's MORE than just having the stadiums... you need to infrastructure - transport for one, accomodation, media capacities - and also you need the POPULATION. How will we possibly sell out 60,000 between Tunisia and Saudi Arabia at Adelaide Oval? It just won't happen.

Trust me, if you ever get to see the World Cup first hand as I and Neale have, you will know what we mean. It's just a monster that makes the Olympic Games look like a day at Little Athletics in comparison.

I see in yesterday's paper both state and commonwealth governments are in support of proposing a 2018 bid. One would think the FFA will get behind it too, so that is my guess.

Also on the Italians, check out the events after the world cup in the country's worst match fixing scandal. All very messy.

quote:Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina were relegated to the Italian second division overnight as punishment for their involvement in the country's match-fixing scandal, but AC Milan were handed a Serie A reprieve.

Juventus was also deducted 30 points from the club's total for next season and stripped of its past two league titles.

Lazio and Fiorentina were also relegated to Serie B and penalised seven points and 12 points respectively.

AC Milan will stay in Serie A but will lose 15 points and will be kicked out of the Champions League.

A sports tribunal made up of five retired judges handed down the verdicts.

The tribunal's decision came just five days after Italy won the World Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory over France in Berlin.

The teams will have three days to appeal before a federal court of arbitration and a final decision will be given by July 24.

Players

Together the four clubs punished accounted for most of the players in the Italy team which won the World Cup.

Many of the top players from Juventus may seek new clubs either in Italy or elsewhere in Europe.

Coach Fabio Capello, who guided Juventus to the two titles they have been stripped of, quit as coach last week and joined Spanish club Real Madrid.

The scandal broke in May with the publication of intercepted telephone conversations between a former Juventus official and Italian soccer authorities discussing refereeing appointments.

As well as the clubs, the tribunal barred a number of club officials from the game for varying lengths.

Former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi, who was at the centre of the scandal, was banned from the game for five years and ex-federation president Franco Carraro for four-and-a-half years.

A prosecutor who made charges had sought relegation to the third division Serie C for 29-times Italian champions Juventus.

Officials from some of the Italian clubs named in the scandal have said they will turn to Italy's civil courts, raising the prospect of a messy legal battle.
