View Full Version : Thoughts on Evolution and Shaggy

Again, a top notch show from the Evolution crew last night on Fox. Without a doubt Josh and Nugget are putting on the best Muay Thai shows in Australia and continuing to bring new talent to the public.
Jesse Tierney looked very handy in the grapple and is going to give Steve Fielding a battle at our next show.
How good was the Staiti vs Holland fight? Mark is getting more aggressive with every fight and for mine was the fight of the night. Both guys never gave an inch and could easily have been the main event in itself.
But what about Shaggy? Who is going to stop him?
For all intents and purposes he fights mainly kickboxing; doesn't really grapple and doesn't generally go out of his way to throw elbows, but with that wicked huge overhand right, why would he? Nice strong high kicks, I am surprised his opponents don't try to get on the inside and grapple him hard. For 16-odd fights he shows a lot of maturity and businessmanlike gameplan.
I think Shaggy is the hardest punching 75kg fighter in the country and well ready to take on the likes of Choppa. Would be interesting to see how someone would try to work him into the grapple.
JNI and I would have him down here again in a flash if we can think of someone to put up against him...
Ghot and Dane also had excellent fights against tough opposition. The Nugget stable are all top rate and Evolution is a joy to watch.

Sorry... Don't agree with you about matching Shaggy with Choppa at this stage.
Shaggy is coming along nicely, and with maybe 5 or 6 more fights, might be up for the challenge.
Lets face it,Shaggy would have to compete against the likes of DDD and Wazza before taking on someone like Choppa.
Eli Manigan IMHO would be a test for Shaggy.Eli is very technical and good in the grapple. This is the fight that must happen at some stage soon.

Dane impressed me.
I really thought he would have his work cut out for him but he finished off that Thai in no time.
That Thai also looked a lot smaller, anyone else agree?
And I have one more question, why didn't Murph put any 8 count on that Thai when he was in a world of bother, after falling to the canvas?

yeh i couldnt believe he let it go on, i thought it should have been called off, lucky the thai didnt get hurt badly

it looked like the thai got badly winded when body slammed. Perhaps struck his head on the floor.
I love how after every 8 count the Murph pats their head like a dog to check everything is still functioning within.
Wazza doesn't impress when he is not fighting a shorter opponent. He is probably the most agile and flexible of knee fighters in the country but when that is nullified like last night against Lenard, he doesn't seem to have the punching and kicking power of many other fighters.

I agree with Dazmon and Robot, I think the fight should've been called off. I think the safety of the fighter should ALWAYS come before a crowd pleasing KO.
Not a good look at all.
Furthermore,
These guys are top fighters anyway. There is no need to paint then into un-stoppable machines just for a bit of glitz, glam and cheers.
I think it would be nice to see them being a little more humble.

I reckon the Thai was winded badly after the attempted takedown backfired, rather than wobbled, but I also reckon that it should have been stopped before it was.
As for fighters being more humble, I'm not sure what you mean Mei Hua, but I like the different personalities on display actually.

Oh yeah, and also Wazza doesn't impress me either - I watched on my VHS copy this morning and had to fast forward through this fight, too boring.

I remember shaggy beating richard mango allen with a couple of huge elbows on evo 6!! He can grapple, he just likes to throw down!!!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

IMO wazza needs to change his fight style if he wants to keep a decent fan base. I was at the event and the crowed was on the edge of there seats until wazza's fight. i even seen people fall asleep. he just needs to stop reaching for the graple and just set for some nice clean shot's.

Shaggy is from one of the best Thai boxing gyms in Australia, to say he is a kickboxer is nothing more than an insult to him and his trainer

So after one fight at 75kgs & he walks around at 74kgs your saying this As for Choppa fighting him he would have to many tricks up he sleaves right now for shaggy what you tryen to get him set up for a big fall early in fight career

murph was chating to him the hole time maken sure he new what he was doing before the fight went on if he put a 8 count on the thai it would have made the thai rush back into the fight when not need

shaggy has landed two hugh elbows mango allen rocken him to win his fight on evo 6 & stoped dale damger at the beenleigh area with elbows which split dale open

why is that an insult to him and his trainer? If his strongest technique is the overhand right and he KO's guys with it then why insist he grapple? Don't you figure Nugget is smart enough to utilize his best weapons?
If Shaggy was a little lighter he'd make a great K1 Max fighter too.
Why do you think Choppa is so great that he would school Shaggy? I could imagine Shaggy planting some savage straight rights and rips into Choppa and bringing him down exactly as JWP did on several occasions.
I even think in a mod thai contest Shaggy would beat him now. He is a tough fighter, can take a hit, has had 16 or 17 fights, why is it too early to show his skills against the top tier?
Shaggy has fought several times at 75kgs, that was the weight vs Simon Black.
Carnage isn't a fantastic grappler either but holds WMC/WBC titles. Is that insulting him? I don't follow your logic mate.

the fighters corner has the option to call a fight off at any time - just as the referee does - the Murph has had more fights than most people in Australia and been referee countless times as well he was there you were not .. maybe you should become a ref and do better

Shaggy gets so much power in those punches. I agree voice the overhand right is good, but even his jab is a weapon in its own right. Great technique in his punching and his kicks are very strong as well.
The two big fellas Jesse and Rob put on a great fight, with Jesse wearing a couple of sharp right hands from Rob but getting the better of Rob in the grapple. Go the big boys.
I didnt enjoy watching the Thai fella after that takedown with Dane, i thought it should have been stopped, but that was Murph's or his corners call.
Good work Nugget, on the show and your fighters, you must have something in the water up there.

I agree Shaggy could fight Choppa but I also agree that he would get schooled by Choppa which wouldnt do him any harm. These guys are worlds apart in experience and skill and its a fight I doubt would ever happen?
Also agree with most that the Thai V Dane should have been stopped as he didnt look winded he looked concused(spelling as usual)and was in no condition to defend himself. IMO that was a dangerous situation and the fighters health should be paramount.

I did notice Rung Chai. I agree with your points too dutts. On Shaggy(great fighter), I think if he comes against a power puncher he could be stopped. He carries his hands far to low when he trades punches and he cocks his elbow right out on his right hand.. A body punchers wet dream to counter.
