Sorry, haven't got any good photos from Quarter final #1, so we'll go straight to #2.
Good shot of Ben trying to power through the wiley JR. Jordan was hard to catch at the start, very quick and very slick, I'm sure we'll be seeing him again. Fight finished in R3 after a high knee split Jordan's forehead in R2, and eventually the ref stopped it when the blood continued.

Nice photo of Corey kicking Steve 'Bone Man'.
The was quite a height difference between these 2 and as a result many high knees were aimed at Corey's face but none seemed to do much damage, whereas Corey slogged on and worked down low, working hard like he always does.

Semi # 2, hard fight for Sone, I'm sure he is use to overwhelming his opponents, he has a strong right hook, but Corey could take most of it and Sone started to tire. Sone was fresh because he had won within the first round of the quarters, but Corey had done a full 3 rounder with The Bone Man. Sone seemed to use the clinch to recharge, but meanwhile Corey was going to town on him with knees, Sone was quite content to wait for Corey to finish.

Sone was lucky (maybe planned, a good strategy nontheless) to finish the fight, right at the end, with a super jumping knee that dropped Corey. To his credit, he beat the 8 count but was on jelly leg street. And can someone from JTS tell me why Corey always fights with so much Vaseline?

And we arrive at the final, which was a battle to go the full distance between the dynamic Sone and everyone's favourite warrior Chris.
I think, despite what Voice said earlier, both handled the format fine. Both had an early finish to their quarter final bouts, which is especially handy, but both had 3min x 3 round battles after that, both of them looked in great shape, both walked out of the ring in fine condition.

Sone tried his rolling thunder kick, plus a few other tricks, but Chris was unfazed and that's what won him over even more in the crowd's eyes. There was a remarkable lack of elbows used, but Sone stuck to his leg kicks which seemed to be working and Chris had his own counter kicks which rarely missed, one even dropping Sone for an 8 count. Sone's hard punches did not get the result he wanted and there wasn't much in the way of clinching, so the scoring was close like Mat said coming down to roundhouse & push kicks and punches.

Definetely the best MT show in Vic to date.

Chris White is a consumate professional - excellent fighter, ring presence and personality to boot make him well appreciated by the Melbourne crowd who cheered him all night.

Sone - I saw Sone fight Reinhard Badato on Foxtel several years ago where he pulled off the jumping front kick to knock Reinhard clean off his feet before eventually losing on points. I looked real smart to my mate predicting a jumping technique to end the fight after Sone started playing possum. Have definetely got to get the guy fighting in Melbourne again.

Ben Smullen - fought really well on the night and had hard battles each time. An exciting hard as nails as fighter with a great attitude(the smirk on the face after getting wacked in the face with a spinning backfist said it all) who has a deserved following.

Corey K - composed fighter who did well on the night. War with Zerkel which I picked the other way then another war with Sone. Corey has a pretty good chin and a ton of courage. Another fighter who is just getting better.
Personally I thought the undercard was quite reasonable - these boys will develop and show promise. Well done to all concerned.

Understand the Corey v Steve (rematch) fight was a close one with Corey getting the decision. Corey then went on and by all reports was ahead on points v Sone Vannathy, that was until a jumping knee to Corey's jaw put him down at the end of the 3rd..

Maube Steve v Corey #3 in WA soon !!!

All reports though a GREAT night of fights with Chris being the deserved winner..

Hey Bill,
Bone Man had a definite reach advantage, but just couldn't put Corey away with any of his techniques. So often he could have used his high knees to great effect but as I said there was no impact behind them. Corey is tough as nails so to drop him is going to take a lot of effort. I have one photo somewhere which shows the size differences clearly between these 2. And the other one where Corey has his head down, as happened a few times, but Steve could not take up on this opportunity.

TAO @ JTS

hi bill,

i actually had the Steve Vs Corey very close on the score cards. Steve was using his trademark walk up knees to perfection, landing a couple in the first. corey got more active in the grapple this time round and dumped steve cleanly in each round. so IMO, steve landed some very clean shots, but corey had the higher work rate and was going forward the entire time. with the dumps and sweeps it probably edged him ahead on the score card. but like i said... this was probably the closest fight on the night to judge. but don and i thought corey was definately ahead.

steve used his height and reach to his adv, quite a bit. as dazmon says above he is able to get good control of corey's head at times. corey was aware of this given they fought before. so this time he would answer with an overhand right which negated steve opportunity to land the knee to his head. steve did get one thru in the second i think giving corey a nice little cut over the left eye.

at the end of the day though, it was a good clean and technical fight. which we were happy with.

Corey's heading to Thailand for a year on April 18th. But we are hoping to get him in the ring one more time before that date... but only if the money is right.

He did seem to use the clinch to recharge though didn't he, he wasn't too fazed about his opponent kneeing.
I think he should make another appearance, in a set 3 or 5 rounder against a suitable opponent. At a comfortable weight.

Here is a report from George that he wanted me to put up.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Super 8 finally arrived back in Victoria.. WMC Muaythai promoter George Kolovos from Melbourne knew this event was going to be one of his biggest shows yet with all 450 ringside seats sold out days before and extra seating had to be organised to meet the demand.
Sunday 5th March will now be hailed as the best Thai Boxing event ever in Melbourne. 8 warriors came from 3 Australian States, Vic, WA, Qld and New Zealand, fighting for a total prize pool of $6,000 plus a Super 8 Title Belt.

First fight for the evening gave everyone a taste of what was to follow. Chris White WA didn't take long to drop Daniel Shearing Vic with a low kick to the shin, possibly fracturing Daniel's shin receiving a TKO in 1 minute 40 seconds in the first round, moving into the semi's with no injuries.

Next fight was the local hero Ben 'TC' Smullen Vic against Jordan Richards WA,standing nearly 6 foot tall it was always going to be a struggle for Ben. They both exchanged punches and kicks working hard to separate until Ben in the second round clinched Jordan, pulling his head down and kneeing him, splitting his head, before the Doctor could stop the fight the bell rang for the end of the round. The work done in Jordan's corner was not enough to stop the bleeding and the fight was stopped by the Doctor 33 seconds into the 3rd round. Ben moved on to face Chris in the semi's.

The next fight was a re-match between Corey Konsaknao VIC and Steven Zenkl WA of a fight that was held in mid 2005. The fight went the distance with both fighters showing great skill but Corey far too strong and receiving the judges decision to move on to face Sone Vannathy NZ in the semi's. Sone had already dropped Justin Gibbons QLD in his match in 1 min 31 secs in the 1st round with a combination of punches, finally dropping him with a right hook and sending him down for the count, taking 5 mins to revive.

The show had begun, the first 4 fights saw 3 KO's, the crowd could not believe the level of fighting and the excitement was building for the next fight Chris White vs Ben Smullen. Smullen the local favourite came at White who was like a sniper, picking his shots, very technical, making Ben pay for any mistakes. Ben tried hard, at one stage the Ref stopped the fight when Ben received a punch straight in the face which looked like he would drop but Ben just shook it off straight away and the Ref, without putting the count on him, re-started the fight immediately. In the end all judges gave a unanimous decision to Chris White. Ben Smullen received a standing ovation from the crowd for his sheer guts and determination.

Sone Vannathy squared up with Corey Konsaknao in the next fight that looked like a major upset, everyone thought Sone would be too strong for him but Corey, to his credit, took him all the way, winning all the clinching and dominating all the rounds. Sone, who had to pull something out of the bag to win, showed his experience by dropping Corey with a jumping knee kick and receiving a TKO, a very lucky Sone moves onto the finals. This was by far the best fight of the night with Corey showing he can mix it with the best.

The finals had the crowd very excited to see the technician Chris White against Sone Vannathy's power. 2 minutes into the 1st round Chris downed Sone with a body punch to the ribs for a count of 8 and it didn't look like he was going to get up. Once again experience made him survive the 1st round for the battle really to begin in the next 2 rounds. Finally at the end Chris White was the victor of the Super 8 Victoria. A fantastic event!

George Kolovos has been putting on great shows for Victorians with fantastic results in a sport that has only been around in Melbourne less then 18 months.. Brute Force 'Muaythai'… the sport of Champions! The next show is scheduled for Sunday night 9th July.

All I meant is that chances are that if he didn't KO his opponents in the lead up to the final, he would have lost on pts to Corey and probably to Justin too. His patented jumping front kick is hilarious to watch though..

Just realised the Sone that fought here is the same guy Wayne Mead fought twice for two wins, once kickboxing (very close) in Sydney and once mod thai rules (easy win for wayne) in Brisbane early last year. What was Sone's knees like?? And he fought with elbows in the final hey? Did he throw any? Just curious after seeing him fight twice before. He's a top guy too. Cheers
