Thought I'd share some of the old flyers I have, may be of some interest to some of you guys. Some of the shows might be from when you were in primary school! I found a few when I was doing a search. They'll be from the early 90s. Sorry if they're slow-loaders...

Here's another Gurkan one. Not surprising since he was the most active around that time.
Like Dale's sunnies???

Ah, at last, a Stan the Man flyer.
Anyone go to this?
Did you know Satake was always a big star in Japan, even after these 2 matches with Stan. He use to appear on celebrity contest shows etc. I saw him demonstrate an axe kick onto the head of a lifesize dummy that they brought in for him. Stan never got to do this sort of stuff did he!?

Wow, these are a trip down memory lane, thanks man.

Bushi, I'm no historian, but I can remember a few of the results.

Best Of The Best: This middleweight tourney was won by Gurkan Ozkan by beating Sam Soliman in the finals after beating Dale Westerman in the semis. The Diamond had actually upset Paul Briggs in the quarters, and Soliman had beaten Louie 'Ice' Iosifidis in the quarters as well, a rematch of their WKA Australian full-contact middleweight title. Soliman beat 'Mighty' Mark May for the second time in the semis, the man who had previously beaten Gurkan Ozkan in their first encounter, for the ISKA amateur world super-middlweight title in Sydney. Anthony Lapia pulled a Greg Foley.

Test of Courage: Gurkan Ozkan knocked out the Thai legend in the first round when he exploded with about a dozen or so unanswered punches to the head. Sam Soliman had his first victory over Mark May.

Armed & Dangerous: I think this is the event where Gurkan ended up fighting Jason Suttie and won a ten round non-title bout.

Dual world title: Gurkan annihilated England's Keith Clewly for the ISKA world amateur super-middleweight title. Keith than gave us a memorable and amusing speech as to why he lost afterwards. Tibet Hamza also won his bout for the ISKA world light-welterweight title by stoppage, can't remember what round. I think this was the show where Bader Arafan challenged Stan and Tosca after his bout.

Revenge: Loved this show. Stan and Satake fought a 12 round war for the WKA/ISKA world super-heavyweight titles, which ended up a draw. I think the Japanese judge scored every round for Satake, while one judge gave it to Stan by a couple of points and the other scored it a draw, so Stan kept his titles. Tosca won the ISKA world junior cruiserweight title, but not against Atokawa, I forget his opponent's name. Sam Greco KO'ed Bob Crawford in a bare knuckles Karate bout, Paul Briggs KO'ed highly regarded Japanese star Taiei Kin with a barrage of knees, while his brother Nathan was KO'ed by an absolutely huge spinning back fist in the final round of his WKA Australian heavyweight Muay Thai title bout, which he was leading comfortably, against defending champion Alistair Gibb.

Thanks again DazMon, cool thread, and even cooler flyers.

Fantastic thread, love the pictures.

"Tosca won the ISKA world junior cruiserweight title, but not against Atokawa, I forget his opponent's name."

His opponent was William Knorr, a mean hick from the bayous of Louisiana....Knorr is best known in American kickboxing circles for having fought Rick Roufus twice, and also having fought Jean-Yves Theriault.

Tosca did end up fighting Atokawa later, in K-1. In fact, they fought one another twice. First one was in the K-2 GP, the other was a revenge match in a following K-1 card.

Can anyone confirm whether Armed & Dangerous was the event with Ozkan vs Suttie? And what year did that take place? I didn't know Ozkan beat him, I would have thought Suttie wins. Just further proof that Ozkan was a badass during his prime, as Suttie had a win over the great Ivan Hippolyte.

I believe it was " Armed & Dangerous " that Suttie fought on.

Although he fought on very short notice against Gurkan.
Has always wanted a rematch but never got one.

hahaha cannot belive the diffrence man Gurkan Ozkan has changed soo much now, i guess time flies so fast, Best of the Best was a awesome tournament i remember that, the 8 fighters were all quality and Gurkan was at his peak then and easily encounted all 3 fighters!!!

The Gurkan Ozkan vs the Legendary Changpuek was one of the upsets and the best knockouts ive seen from Gurkan, no one gave a chance to Gurkan beating the all time great, but that was his stepping stone causing the upset of the History destroying him with a combination of punches in the 1st round

Man i missed the old school days, those were the best!!!

Turtle,

Thanks for that info.
I dont think many people expected to see him go the twelve rounds and take the fight right up to him. great to hear.

Stan probably would have got the win here if it wasn't for that Japanese judge. I mean, the Japanese guy gave EVERY one of the 12 rounds round to Satake!! Not a bad trick considering Stan appeared to be way ahead on points after the first 8 rounds. Satake closed stronger but I agreed with the judge who had it 115-113 for Stan, 7 rounds to 5.
Seriously, how could so called professional judges get away with stunts like that?

Well, Gurkan's win over Stan didn't mean too much, anyway. Basically a novelty fight to sell tickets. Stan was a shadow of his former self, but you do have to hand it to Ozkan for fighting at heavyweight against Stan and other heavyweight opponents. The guy was a super middleweight who ventured up & down in weight for fights, which couldn't have been good for his career, health-wise.

Louie Iosifidis vs Anthony Lapia was an excellent fight, love it, and the semi main event, Ian Jacobs vs Dale Westerman, produced one of the sickest KKOs I've ever seen. Awesome.

SPADA
19-01-2006, 12:45 PM
Yes that was a sick KKO.
I didn't think Westerman would get up at all.

I remember watching Stan vs Satake when they 1st fought in Japan.
Satake gave Stan a dose of his own medicine and bashed him with hard
leg kicks over the distance.Bit of a shock loss for Stan,as 12 months earlier he had beaten Dennis Alexio and was at the height of his career. The rematch in Melbourne was a good fight to watch.

Also on that tape from Japan was the fight where Adam Watt Koed
some guy with an awesome spinning backfist.Adam was the master
of this technique.

I wish Solak would've promoted a show called Turkish Delight back in the day... just for the hell of it! Ozkan won back his ISKA amateur world super-middlweight title against Mark May in this rematch after having lost it in Sydney. Too bad these two didn't have a rubber match, but they deserved too. It could've happened at the Best Of The Best show, but Sam Soliman beat Mark May in the semis.
