NEW YORK: The International Boxing Federation has rejected a bid by its top-ranked contender, Chris Byrd, to have Lennox Lewis stripped of the heavyweight crown.
The announcement, made here by Lewis promoters' Main Events, means the British champion will fight for the IBF and World Boxing Council titles when he faces Mike Tyson on June 8 in Memphis, Tennessee.
The IBF executive committee made the decision after a three-hour appeal from Byrd, who argued that Lewis should forfeit the crown for taking a big-money fight against the WBC's top-rated challenger rather than face him.
The IBF's original ruling in the matter stands, which is that the winner of the June 8 bout will negotiate to fight Byrd next and that the American fighter is allowed to have a tune-up bout because of the delay.
Should no deal be made for Byrd to face the Lewis-Tyson winner, a purse bid will be set for August 8 for a title fight between Byrd and the champion. Fighters would have 10 days to accept or reject terms of the bid winner.
You folks don't mind posts about boxing do you? I know it is a kickboxing bulletin board but most of us like to hear news from all combat sports, dont we???? Please respond...
