G'day guys,(and girls before someone yells at me)

I have been playing around over the last week or so with a web site to give my club a bit of exposure.

I would like peoples opinions and any pointers ect on anything else that people think i could put into it, or change to make it better.

It's nothing to flash but it is a start.

Big D, do you blokes have to attend a certain number of lessons to be eligble to attain a certain singlet colour? And how many rounds of sparring do you have to complete for each singlet colour? Pending I guess whether your trainer thinks you are ready to grade up.

Hey Bushi,
if i could do that for you i would, but the site makes the photo's the size they are so there nothing i can do about it. Sorry Mate

MTM,
there are leason numbers as minimum requirements but for the life of me i can't remember what they are, but thanks for pointing that out i will find out and update the page. I know the final say is up to the instructor but the core requirments i can get. Thanks

Hey Big D..good to see another fellow BJC member on the board.

There isn't a minimum number of lessons as such. It's up to the instructor to gauge the ability of the student.

From memory the grading requirements are,

- 3 min "Gladiator" It's a 3 min aerobic workout pushups, situps, jumping jacks, shuttle sprints, squats etc with no rest in between.
- Demonstration of punch/kick/elbow/knee/grapple techniques, with or without partner
- Shadow sparring
- Bag rounds on focus/thai pads (something like 5 x 2 min rounds)
- Sparring rounds. 5 x 2min rounds I think. More if your instructor is feeling nasty on the day.

Fair enough mojo. Where i'm from, we are similar, (although it's up to the individual to be fit enough (we never do actual physical exercises like calisthenics etc in class, only purely technique and combos and sparring)to perform the tasks at hand, which I have always respected, because I pay money to be taught how to fight, not do 100 squats/pushups etc etc, wasting precious time.
At a grading we do 30 mins on the pads first doing combos whilst being watched obviously for technique (pretty much flat chat) and then pending on singlet colour trying to obtain dictates how many full contact sparring rounds you do after that. And he will wait long after you are eligible through actual lesson numbers, so you are well and truly ready in his eyes to be at that level.
Blue - after first 15 lessons (3x3min sparring)
Green - A further 30 lessons (5x3min sparring)
Brown - A further 45 lessons (8x3min sparring)
Black - A further 60 lessons (12x3min sparring)
Baring in mind we had a maximum 2 lessons per week we could attend. It works out to be way after that though that you attain that singlet level. Higher ranks than these can not be obtained without fighting in the ring. They are honourary as well, after long service with the stable.
they being:
Black singlet with red icon ("red on black")
Red singlet (instructor status)
It is based on BJC, as the head honcho used to be affiliated with them originally a very long time ago I do believe.

Good point about the fitness..can chew up to half the class time.
Just a quick question about your sparring. Is it touch/semi/full contact? The general rule for us is semi contact and if you want full, you need to don the head gear and agree with the other student.

Mojo I just edited my post actually, I didn't quite write it right the first time around. It is always full contact, we generally do at least 3x3mins after a weekly session as well. I've come home with some ripper haematomas let me tell you on the old shins. Always been pretty good with the hands though, so no black eyes or busted nose.
I was flat out wearing an abdominal protector mate there at one stage :). We don't use any headgear, only if they do elbows down in Brisbane part, I've heard of, we haven't done that though up here.
Also if you don't put up a fight, you don't get the singlet, one bloke didn't get his black singlet once from memory (never actually saw it) because he was deemed to be not aggresive enough, back peddling too much. I also respect this moreso than rocking up for a black belt grading (which I have watched for ZDK and TKD) and they just get it given to them, even though they were semi contact, and paid there money. More interested in the money turnover than training people to fight effectively. I would say this would be happening in MT now as well unfortunately.

Yeah it's with all martial arts these days. You've just got to find yourself a good instructor in the art you want to practice.

I suppose it depends on the target audience too. For instance I've trained @ clubs where the focus is on fighters, so v.physical and hard.
Then I've trained @ clubs where it's obviously aimed @ the novices..which wasn't much harder than a taebo class.

nah, we are purely Muay thai, but the head honcho has a probationary 3rd dan in ZDK, he must have been involved with BJC beforehand somehow.

Big D,
Just checked out the site and it looks great. Just one thing you may want to change...the 3rd of January is a tuesday not a wednesday as you have stated. Some people are a bit thick and that will really confuse them! :)
