I know this isnt a very nice topic, just something i was debating with a friend and would like to get to the bottom of.

Is it possible for a fighter to contract HIV/AIDS whilst fighting an infected opponent who becomes cut during a fight? and if so is there any blood testing at profesional or amateur level?

I apoligise if this is a stupid question to ask but iam very curious.
any answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Steve

I don't see any reason why you couldn't, assuming both fighters got cut. I'm assuming HIV is blood-borne, is this correct?

yes "willy" to the best of my knowlege... i am not a doctor and could be (probly am) wrong, to get HIV or simmilar dissease the blood of an infected person has to penetrate the skin of the uninfected person. from what i have heard this could be though an open wound ie cut or maybe through the eye ??
However i am not sure which is why i posted the topic.
all answers very much appreciated
thanks again,
steve.

guys what about the mandatory serology testing that is done under the wmc for each & every fighter before he/she is allowed to fight.
I am not sure as to what the other sanctioning bodies do but we can only hope that such a high degree of care is taken also.

To contract HIV during a fight you are both going to have to have quite large cuts, and practically rub them on each other for awhile.. HIV is alot harder to contract than made out to be. As soon as HIV leaves the body it dies, making it more difficult to infect another person.

Hepatitis is around 100 times more contagious than HIV. And how often do you hear of a fighter contracting hepatitis?
Not very often, so fear not.

Unless your opponent bends you over the ropes and jabs you in a different way I think you will not have any chance at catching HIV but HEPATITIS is a different story, get your shots before fighting out of Australia...

Well the fighters in my club have been tested the week before their actual fight, only to get the results after their bout, pointless in my eyes.
But like Voice said, there are other viruses mor eeasily transmissible, and generally you dont hear about people contracting it this way, although it would be possible.

I thought Hep B was easily transmissible than HIV in a normal situation, not sure about a ring fight.

is there a doctor in the house?? to answer this?
Interesting post Steve.

yes, all the hep strains will transmit easily from kissing and other light internal contact (beware those smoochy fighters at the touch-gloves).

HIV on the other hand is transmitted generally in one of 2 ways...blood transfusion (think we are all safe there) and the OTHER way, which I am sure everyone knows also and if you are into that hopefully don't do unprotected.

Other than that, casual contact, kissing, even blood being smeared on you would be an extremely rare method of contracting it, so fear not (on getting HIV at least).

I would recommend to all fighters to have at least Hep C vaccinations. Priceless.

Hey all,
I'm a nurse, so I know abit about this subject..
Hep B is transmitted either through blood or is sexually transmitted.
Hep C is transmitted thorugh direct blood contact, and sexually transmitted. This also includes sharing razors, nail clppers etc with an infected person..
HIV is the same, blood or sexually transmitted.. HIV is the hardest to get, the virus lives seconds outside the body.

There is no vaccine available for hepatis C or HIV... However there is a vaccination available for Hep B..It's a course of 3 injections over a 6 month period..

Would you believe they are actually up to hepatitis F now...

just me, I stand corrected Hep B not Hep C...I did the 3 shot course over a few months. My mistake Hep C no vaccine.

Also Hep B will transmit via saliva think you will find.

Hi

I hate hepatitis.!! I had to deal with students whom are Hep-carrier and it is a painful experience for any coaches or fighter has to go through. I have had many kids walking in the door with so much talent and so much to offer to the sport, but only to discover they a carrier. Many kids in the third world country are born with Hep because of poor heath programs and lack of finacial funding.

From my understanding Hep C is curable, but only in early stages. But hep B there is no cure only a prevention vaccine. However the Chinese medicine claims they have a cue for Hep B. The good news is there are new drug being developed and could one day cure all Hepatitis. And there are some people whom are born with antibiotic in there blood that can fight of Hepatis they call it the “Anti-Core”(In French).

I am not so sure, but I heard you catch Hep through the eyes, if infected blood finds it way through the blood vessel.

Im,
that Chinese cure for Hep wouldn't happen to involve a rare part of a Bengal tiger would it??<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Last night at Motley Crue, Tommy Lee handed a bottle of Jagermeister to the crowd to drink from. *shudder* That's like guaranteed hepatitis.
