Danny Green's win over Nico Toriri has made the Green/Mundine match-up the most anticipated boxing event in the country

Danny Green is a very good boxer but the quality of opposition hasn't been as high as one would expect. His last opponent(above) had a record of 25-14-3 losing 4 of his last 5 fights. The opponent before that had a record of 0-4-2 with 4 straight loses before facing and losing to Green. He has knocked them out early, but i'm just surprised at the records of the fighters he has fought. Records don't say everything but they can indicate something. The highest ranked fighter he has faced might have been Smallman but I could be wrong.

Green calls for Mundine showdown
By Dean Ritchie
November 11, 2002

UNBEATEN Danny Green's devastating third round knockout win at the weekend should guarantee the much-awaited stoush with Anthony Mundine.

That is the opinion of Green's trainer and former three-time world champion Jeff Fenech.

"This fight has to happen," Fenech said.

Green's third-round knockout win over Indonesia fighter Nico Toriri to retain the IBF Pan Pacific super middleweight title on Saturday night came just a week after Mundine disposed of Ricky Thornberry.

But Mundine did not even watch the fight, according to his manager Koder Nasser.

"I'm 100 per cent sure Choc didn't watch the [Green] fight," Nasser said.

But Green-Mundine is the one fight an Australian public is craving.

Asked if Green still wanted Mundine, Fenech said: "That's all we want. It's got to be done.

"Danny doesn't say he's the best but he wants to prove it.

"The other guys says he's the best. If you say that, every now and then you have to step up to the plate.

"This fight would fill any stadium.

"And more people would go to watch Danny knock him out than see Anthony fight."

Fenech said about 5000 people watched Green and Toriri at Challenge Stadium in Perth.

"The reception Danny got was unbelievable," Fenech said. "It was deafening.

"When Mundine fights at Liverpool he gives away 3000 tickets. The Challenge Stadium was sold out."

The 29-year-old Green entered the ring wearing a Kingsley Football Club jersey as a tribute to the club that lost seven players in the Bali bombings.

Green took a measured approach in the opening two rounds before rocking the 36-year-old Toriri early in the third.

The Sydney-based West Australian unleashed a series of body blows and a right hook to the head, putting Toriri on the canvas in the opening seconds of the third round.

Toriri struggled to get to his feet and could not beat the count.

"He hit him [Toriri] in the temple and dropped him," Fenech said.

It was Green's 13th professional win and maintained his unbeaten status. He is yet to be pushed beyond eight rounds.

Earlier, highly rated middleweight boxer Nader Hamdan remained undefeated after 30 fights with the referee stopping his bout with Indonesian Sikat Pasaribu late in the fifth round.

Mundine has been resting on the Gold Coast and is yet to announce his next opponent.

Just a couple of things about this.
Danny green much like Mundine has had very few crediable wins. Now I understand that when you are building a record you work your way up but he has no real legit challenge to make to Mundine until he fights atleast one highly ranked world fighter. For Mundine to accept this fight would be a backwards step, Danny presents nothing in terms of value in Mundines attempt for a world title other than a tough fight.(which perhaps he needs a few more of) Mundine on the other hand offers Green a chance at a top ten contender, boxing fame for beating mundine, and a good size pay packet.
Fenech has this tendancy to put his fighters against numerous Thai or other tough but washed up fighters that balloon their record. If you dont agree with me that is fine, but take a look at the last 6 fights that fenech has had his boys on and tell me who have they fought.(other than wayne Parr, and we all saw how close he got to winning.)

I agree Koshy Fenech puts his fighters in the ring with Bangkok cab drivers to inflate thier records, just look at Nader Hamden and the Hussein brothers. As soon as these guys take on a world class fighters from the top 10 from either the WBC/WBA/IBF they are in serious trouble.
Mundine has had much more creditable wins than Danny Green, Mundine has destroyed Marc Bagero,Ian Mcleod,Rick Thornberry,Brad Mayo, Soon Bootes and not too mention a world title fight which he had winning on points until he was knocked out by Sven Ottke. Seriously Danny Green has acheived nowhere near what Mundine has and it would be a backwards step for him to take on Danny Green, Mundine is not too far from a world title shot with Byron Mitchell which he will win if it goes down. Byron Mitchell is the weakest of all the supermiddle weight champions, I think Australia should rally behind and support him and stop coming up with other Australian fighters as he has proved himself in Australia already.

Your not a champion if you win a belt.

Janer,
What do you mean you not a champion if you win a belt, if you hold the title you are the champ and thats that. When Tyson held the title he was the champ regardless of wether people liked him or not.
So pull your head in!

There is no way that Mundine will take this fight. It is too risky for his world title shot aspirations. The only way this fight is gonna happen is when Mundine wins a world title & Danny Green becomes the number one contender. But then again, Danny could be ranked number 1 for one of the titles & number 15 for the one Mundine will have. Why doesn't the green camp offer Mundine $500,000 & say the starlight foundation $500,000. If Mundine is so passionate about this foundation, he would at least show an interest in it, possibly even take the fight, but i somehow doubt it.

apl I can't believe you are bagging Hamden and the Hussein bros over their competiton and yet you call guys like Brad Mayo and Marc Bagero credible wins. Do you honestly think that Green would have any trouble with either of them. I know a few local amatuers from Townsville who sparred with Mayo before the Mundine fight and held their own. Also Ian Mcleod is a middleweight who stepped up to fight Mundine. Also Mundine was not winning the Ottke fight on points before he got KTFO. As I recall the offical scorecards had Ottke ahead on two of them and a draw on the other. Someone else may be able to give the actual scores. Hate to point out the obvious but Nader Hamden is negotiating for a fight with the number one contender to get the mandatory spot. Also you must be forgetting that Skinny Hussein gave a good showing against Manny Pacquaio who many feel is the guy to beat in their division.

P.S. Janer you seem to have a talent for making friends with guys like apl. Anyone remember good old Aldo from Tariks message board. HA HA HA

Farmboy,
Brad Mayo and Bagero were not crdible wins, my point is who has Danny Green fought that makes him a worthy fighter so far in his career. Mundine has proved himself by taking fights such as Ottke and Thornberry whereas Danny Green fights bums from the Pacific Islands.
Seriously Nader Hamden has only fought Bangkok cab drivers, when is he going to take a hard fight and prove himself as a good fighter.
Fenech is known for inflating his fighters records against bums to get them a world rating so they can get a title shot and then they get destroyed.

Janer,
You make enemies by making uneducated comments on topics which you have no idea, again go F#ck yourslef you stupid C*nt.
