Aaahhh the Blair Moore promotions from the early to mid nineties.
Set a precedent for many of the promotions in QLD today. Brought
over from Thailand superstars at the time Jongsanan,Sangtienoi to
name a few. Great promoter and a tough coach having trained a very
young and hungry WONDERKICK Wayne Parr [and myself] for a number of
years. Ah the good ol' days. How are you Blair?? [if your reading]
Good topic Mike...

I really liked the shows that were put on in QLD in the early to mid 90's.
From the great names and fights I witnessed at Jupiters Casino
To the Thailand vs Australia from Festival Hall in Brisbane.
I still rate that show as one of my favourites.
Paul Briggs vs Jomhod
with Nugget,Tony Hill and Brad Carter taking on the other thais.
Tony Hill was the most impressive of the Aussie fighters that night.
Speaking of Tony Hill.... I remember seeing Tony having a ciggy right before his fight against Marcus Mangan....... suprised me abit to see one of our better fighters smoking away.Didn't seem to hamper him though, always seemed fit.

" Tag Team kickboxing "
Jim Shannon & Dale Ritchards
vs
Scott Bannon & Brian Murphy
Something different, which allowed figters to "tag" and let their partner take over the fight.Seemed to flow ok with action, and the time it took to tag and get the other guy in wasn't too long.
The " Murph " didn't think it should go the distance and KOed "Gentleman" Jim Shannon. Not sure how popular the "murph" was after that,as Jim was also the promoter.<img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>

let me try and get whats left of my brain cells working here...i think it was 1986 at the palace nightclub in melbourne, the hilarious double disqualification between leo koori and mick henefee. henefee had reffed one of koori's fights earlier that year and koori wasnt happy how he did his job so they sorted it out by fighting eachother. it stayed clean for about 30 seconds before the ref lost all control and had to dq both. great fun!

i think 1983,fame niteclub.greeks vs aussies(team event).greek team consisted the likes of george konstas, stan the man,and the late pantelli.the aussies won the 1st 3 fights,so the greeks were not going to win.the hot shot and loudmouth for the aussies was a guy called "rotin" rony smith who earlier in the night got disqualified by k.oing an opponent on another team i beleive.stan decides to switch places to face rony!as soon as the bell sounded stan goes for the kill and lands hard blows on him and picks him up wwf style and throws him out of the ring!absolute f%cking classic!!btw...stan got dissqualified! good one fuska. rotten ronnie smith, the original bogan arsehole. those team events for those who dont know were mostly fought semi-contact, no head punches, kicks to head and body, more like taekwando fights. that night was another classic. ronnie smith had ko'd panteli aprikidis illegally with a head shot on a previous event and stan being close friends with pantelli was dirty with ronnie for it, not a well kept secret. lol! bell goes and their semi contact bout turns into bombs thrown at the head from both. lol.stan was about 17 or 18 yo, this goes WAY back! about a year later stan ko'd ronnie for the australian heavyweight kickboxing title.

Guys, heres an old article I dug up.........
" Fighter challenges Promoter "
Steve Jez,one of Sydney's best known fighters, has issued a challenge to Robert Wilesmith of Thunderlegs promotions and gym.The challenge stems from an incident which occurred on Thunderlegs last promotion at the Blacktown Civic Centre.Jez was supposed to have fought a New Zealand opponent but was instead matched against sparring partner and good friend Mita Aporo. However the 2 declined to fight one another because of the way the fight had been set up dishonestly and underhandedly.Jez asked for the chance to address the people who had come to watch him fight to explain why he wouldn't be fighting.Wilesmith had Jez and Aporo escorted from the premises by police, even though Jez was to be in the corner of another figher.
This unprofessional conduct has inspired Jez to make a $ 10,000 winner takes all challenge to fight Wilesmith at any weight. At present
Wilesmith has accepted the challenge and the fight is scheduled to take place at the Marconi Soccer Club.

rob wilesmith was Gods way of showing you how fortunate you are. if ever you felt down or depressed he wanted to show you just how things arent really all that bad. after all,you could have been robert wilesmith. that jez vs wilesmith thing never happened, a real shame too because it would have probably chased wilesmith out of the industry quicker.
wilesmith was a pea brained used car salesman who unfortunately promoted a number of low grade shows in sydney in the 90's. nobody likes him.if anyone here likes him, dont admit it.
anyone remmeber grant barker taking a swing at him after a fight once? unfortunately he missed.

Those of you that haven't seen it should try and chase up the Stan Vs Steve Jez K.O in Sydney.
Stan had done an illegal Spinning back fist and dropped Steve bad. The crowd went nuts and you could see chairs start flying about. Luckily Steve Jez got up and calmed the crowd down by telling them that the Spinning back fist was legal all over Aus, and that it was probably an automatic reflex and therefore an accident.
It was one of the most beautiful K.O's by spinning back fist you're ever likely to see. Check it out fellas. There are a few people about with very rare copies of the tape.
If I find my VHS version, I'll try and digitize the last 30 seconds or so.

If Fox wanted to, I'm sure they could secure screening rights from the video guys that shot most of these events.
I don't know who taped Stan Vs Jez, but Lucy would be a good starting point to track it down.
Wouldn't it make one friggen kick arse program. I reckon it would probably be the most watched Kickboxing show ever screened on Fox. One of the Fox guys should take it on as a producing project. Just the thing for Shiv or Hammer I reckon.

Wilesmith held two shows there from what i remember. I cant remember which one it was, but Mitch O'Hello went down to Duke Rufus on one of them. The Human Jackhammer Bruce Haynes blasted through some concrete as well.
I cant remember too much about the Jez fiasco, but reading it again took me back to that night.
Wilesmith did produce a good fight with Marcus 'Mad Dog' Mangan destroying Englishman John Castelain for a world title though at Bankstown. Damn good fight that one.

Indeed, from old tapes and memory there was hardly a program which DIDN'T have crowd booing, chairs and rubbish thrown in the ring and some major dodgy action that kept the sport in the bowels of public perception. Makes today's promotions look squeaky clean.

classic gym moment, anyone who was there wouldnt forget this. it was around march 1989 stan was home from LA where he was living at the time and training at the jet centre.george zackaria who had gotten out of prison and was preparing to fight the following month on the same bill as stan at melbourne town hall was training at a gym in south melbourne, with some goons talking him up and saying how he would take on anyone who was the best. stan had all the raps on him at because of his record in america and everyone was talking up a sparring session between george and stan this day. gym was absolutely packed, almost like a fight crowd just to see this. anyone who was there will remember this, stan whipped zackaria in embarasing fashion, pulling moves out of his ass hitting george with everything. anyone remmeber some of the moves mike the bounty hunter was doing on jimmy thunder? lol,it was like that. after 2 rounds george gave up. stan ended up doing about 10 more rounds that day against nick talakouris, tosca petridis and a bunch of other boys including myself who did a round with him and he absolutely punched the f*ck out of all of us. i mean nobody could hang with him. if anyone wants to know when stan was REALLY at his peak it was around that time frame when he was tearing everything up. everyone who was there that day still talks about it.

I had a rather unfortunate encounter with Steve Jez back in about 1988 when I was a young lad. It was at a karate tournament when John Newman MP (RIP) was ref and Jez and I were fighting for a place in the NSW team. With the greatest amount of casual ease he brought his left foot up to my jaw and ever so slightly clipped it. When I failed to acknowledge the skill he did the same about 50 times harder and sat me on my arse...he was indeed a gifted exponent.

MattJ, that gym experience with Stan sounds pretty awesome. So are you saying he even took Tosca to school?? In his prime, at Super-Heavyweight and under kickboxing rules, Stan was untouchable.
On a different note, I don't know how many times they fought, but I saw a very young JWP, at the time known as Wayne "Wonderkick" Parr, fight Kerry "Nugget" McNaught for the WKA Australian Super-Featherweight Muay Thai title, once at Brisbane's festival hall and the other time at Acacia Ridge... I think, but can't remember the exact location. Nugget won both times pretty convincingly, but you could see from very early on JWP had a gutsy, fighter's heart. Also, barring Thai fighters, I don't remember Nugget being dominated completely in any of his fights. Both guys are aussie legends now of course, so those fights are a great memory.

Supermario, re; Nugget being dominated early on.
It was way back in about 89 90 at the Beenleigh Distillary, Nugget,
who was training under Mal Anderson at the time fought a young
charge of Paul and Nathan Briggs by the name of John Ford who
did an absolute number Nugget, punching him out cold in the 2nd rnd.
Also, Nugget and Waynes 2nd fight was also at Beenleigh which ended
with Waynes corner throwing in the towel.
Much to the disgust of JWP.

Is that right alchrist, thanks for that bit of info. Spada, I was there for that Australia vs Thailand challenge. Great night, in fact, I've still got the video somewhere, but who knows where!! Also, the Dave Briggs/Malcolm Anderson promotion the previous year featured Ian Jacobs vs Jason Suttie for the WKA Commonwealth super-middleweight kickboxing title. The undercard featured Paul Briggs vs Shane Dargaville and the first JWP vs Nugget fight I mentioned previously. Jacobs busted both of his shins from kicking Suttie so hard, I can't believe Suttie went the distance. I spoke to Ian Jacobs once and he told me both he and Suttie had to go to the hospital afterwards. Also, he was injured for the Australia vs Thailand challenge, so it could've been Ian Jacobs vs the Thai Brad Carter fought that night. Jomhod, who TKO'd Paul Briggs in the 2nd round by leg kicks that night, is still fighting and is the current WMC world middleweight champion at age 35. I'd love to see JWP have a crack at him for that title, at the Gold Coast in a Rising Promotions event.

I have a fight poster somewhere of the Paul Briggs vs Anthony Vella
and on the undercard was supposed to be Nugget vs JWP 3.
Not sure what happened but they didn't end up fighting, instead Dale Middleton took up the challenge and suprised me with how good his hands were. The fight ended in a draw.... but Dale might have shaded nugget that night.

Spada, yeah, I do remember that fight on the undercard, wasn't that Rob "The Demon" Davies who kicked that guy from Black Tigers?? I thought it was all over, but dude got back up and kept fighting. Not for long though, if I recall correctly.
One thing that does stand out from those shows though is the skill level of amateurs then and now. Amateurs these days are very tidy fighters and generally have the goods, skills wise, to be in the ring. I'm not sure about other states, but I've really noticed that step-up in QLD's amateur ranks throughout the years.
Another great show, and great fight, was Ian Jacobs vs Dale Westerman 2. After that KKO that had people believing the Diamond was dead, he put up a hell of a fight in the rematch, but Jacobs was just technically superb.
The first Jacobs vs Westerman fight was the semi-main event in a Blitz promotion that featured Louie "Ice" Iosifidis vs Anthony Lapia for the WKA Australian kickboxing crown. Beautiful fight, saw it on video at a mate's place. Iosifidis vs Vella was awesome as well, which is why I expected more from the Briggs-Vella world title clash, but alas, we all know how that one ended. I still say it would've been one for the ages had the Hitman not twisted his knee so awkwardly, but Briggs would've had the goods in the end all the same.
Was anybody at the Brisbane entertainment centre for Steve Vick vs Chinto Mordillo for the ISKA world super-welterweight kickboxing title fight?? That was a great, great fight, technically superb, and much to everybody's surprise, "Superkick" retired after that fight.

Spada, was sitting ringside with my wife for the OZ V THAI show and
that kick by Rob Davies sounded like a cricket bat hitting a watermelon. Referee counted to ten and let the fight continue, much to the dislike of commentator Bob Jones who gave him a bit of a
talking to after the fight ended [about 10 secs later] by way of knee to the jaw. Fighters name was Danny Wilkinson. Also guys,
remember a show about ten yrs ago at the ANA Gold Coast when a young JWP, fighting for an Australian title kicked Mark Pease thru the ropes in the 2nd to claim victory ? Classic. Have a few of the early shows from QLD on tape and never get tired of watching them.
As for JWP V JOMHOD. It would be a sellout.

When I saw the thread and read the posts it brought back alot of good times and fight nights.
You are probably aware that I have followed KB since Bob Jones introduced the sport back in the late seventies.
I knew I had one of my tickets to the 1st KB show I went to at Melb.Town Hall. Although advertised as a Karate night, I'm pretty sure it was KB with above the waste kicks and the long pants. I think Percy Lanciana was the main event. Anyway, I was at my mums on the weekend sifting through my old stuff which she refuses to throw out and I found it.
http://www.sportzblitz.net/images/bob-jones-ticket.gif
I scanned the ticket and have attached it here. It's not a big deal, but for us that truly love the sport it is worth keeping. Thats my opinion anyway.
Keep up the good work fellas, you now Anthony and I never miss a show on Fox. I'm planning on going to Brute Force 4, so hope to see you there.
