View Full Version : Need for a 80kg K2 category

I can't stop feeling things are stagnating a little here. In particular;

. K1 Max is 70kgs and we have world class fighters like JWP, Soren, Preacher, Pixie and Jordan Tai
. K1 HW is open weight and we have Sting, Chief and a few others

Given that K1 is the best set of generic rules to run these great 8 man tournaments, we are missing on seeing the whole range of fighters in between. Joe White, DDD, Warren Elson (tho he could make Max maybe), Johnny Halford, Charles August, Sniper (dare I mention him), even Gurkan etc etc.

Personally, I'm getting a little weary seeing rematches and uninspiring second-rate imports thrown in as cannon fodder to pad a program. (the Thais being the exception to this)

I believe the way to raise the consumer awareness is by the tournament structure and at the same time will give fighters greater experience and raise standards.
This also appeals to the TV audience as there is a finale and champion on the night. 80kgs is a great weight that incorporates the power knockouts of the heavyweights and the fast technique of the Max fighters.

Any thoughts?

As long as there are tournements around, all weight classes should be accomodated. Crowds love to watch warriors come out again and again on the same night. I think the idea is only fair. Who's up for promoting something like this in Oz.

Very mature Matt J!!!!!

c'mon Pinky, I kind of think you are agreeing....

I'm saying there are already Max and HW K1 tourneys, so we need to cater for the middleweights.
Yes, people do like to see a great fighter 3 times on the night, and yes I think it could be promoted so would be popular.

We aren't trying to make a world title of it Matt, just a bit of fun and something marketable to TV and a wide audience.

The more I think of it the more top fighters in Aus would fit into this group. Just because you are a skinny bugger Pinky and can't make 80kgs ! hehe...

Spot on Voice, this would be awesome. Had an 8 man in Perth last year, at super middleweight and it was a great contest. I would say it is one of the strongest if not the strongest in Perth with the likes of Boom Boom, Walker, Bellamy, Guilfoyle, Kon-yu, Lovett, Will Green, and Brenton Crowe all active.

Its a great Idea, but maybe 85kg is better, the smaller heavyweights can come down, the bigger middleweights can step up. I think it would need to be more of an international thing, not many aussie guys at 80 or 85.

I can't see why the WMC can't sanction it.They have done it for the heavyweight fighters.
Alot of world class fighters around the 80 kgs are fighting regulary
for the WMC.

8 man tournament 80 - 85 kgs ( Full Thai Rules in the final only)

Leonard Sitpholek ( Thailand )
Fredric Rosenberg ( Sweden )
Nathan Corbett ( Australia )
Chris Johnston ( New Zealand )
Clifton Brown ( Canada )
Joe White ( New Zealand )
Mohammed Magmedov ( Russia )
Dimitry Shukuta ( Russia )

* If Boom Boom can make the weight.... then i would put him in,or match him in a super fight against DDD or Elson.

You might have to really open up the purse strings Roy for this one
