This is a great card, one of NZ's best for quite a while. I hope Big Chris doesn't roll out of the ring onto the punters below like last year.
Sniper is absolutely pumped, little bastard been threatening me, insulting my manhood and promising punishment at upcoming sparring session. Hopefully he gets a little touchup before winning to teach him some manners to his elders.
He asked for some tips before his fight...i told him 'be good to his mother and to brush his teeth after eating his sheep'...those little critters play havoc on the breath so i am told

at the risk of 'namedropping' (Shaan, are you there?), Snipp just dropped in and had a bit of a laugh at how he was going to get on the inside of his 7' opponent (author's poetic licence claimed).
He was looking very fit and determined i must say, this fight is going to be a corker, and wait till you see what the lad has in stall for his man!!

sad to hear Sniper lose...he sent me a text after the fight saying he felt off the pace and was caught a bit in the grapple from his tall opponent. He also was a little heavy a few days out so had been running and at the sauna a bit; might have made him a little weak.
Hopefully will hear more soon but he is in nz with the folks for a week.

there is no way on earth i am going to discredit the way joe wrought me this weekend. i did feel extremely flat and perhaps overtrained but i am not going to make excuses for his good effort really. he was very tall and pretty much used his reach and thai skills very well. i felt like i had absolutely no puff in me from about a minute into the fight which suprised me very much. well done to all the fighters it was a great night and i look forward to rematching joe on the next ki oceania in july this year in nz. pete you are the man bro!

damn sorry to hear chris..better luck next time
Well groovers what can I say!! This show was quite an experience!!
I just got home from Auckland havent had a chance to watch the tape but let me say this!! Dixon Mcivor puts on a great show.. The set up was awsome Big screens Pyrotechnics the whole kit and kaboodle!
Some great fights on the night! Especially the Butcher and Big Chris!!
Butcher was just too smart!! Fought a real tactical fight and Kept Tavita out side. You could see Tai lining up for the big over hand and Butcher would just chop his leg or push kick him back. Awsome display of ring smarts from a guy who likes to get in and get the job done.. he even said after the fight that it was hard standing off but he stuck to his plan and it paid off!!!
Big Chris what can I say.. He just took it to Suttie and came up trumps. He was putting together crisp hand combinations and finishing them with leg chops... Jason just kept backing up and didnt seem to have an answer, Finally Out him away in the 2nd extension round with a big leg chop!! Unbelievable fight!!
Pixie vs Jordan.. well what can I say... Pixie may as well have been running a seminar for the first 2 rounds.. "now watch this is how you grapple" Controlled Jordan from outside kicked well chopped at his legs then when Jordan let fly with his legendary hands Pixie just covered up moved through wrapped him up and kneed! Third round..well you will all make up your own mind when you see it but Pixie wore a shot got rocked, bounced of the ropes covered up and got counted.. In my opinion it was a weak count and premature... Unanimous decision to Jordan... Honestly its a tough call...We thought Draw with an extension...
With K1's .5 scoring it makes for a lot of close rounds.. This was evident later in the number of drawn fights.. Chris v Jason went to 5 Iggy Vs Peter extension as well... You can lose 2 rounds 10 9.5 then make up for it and force a draw with a 10 9... Not sure I agree with it but hey they are the rules and the boys knew them so... I guess its not enough to win a round You have to really dominate!..
Anyway guys this was a great show and a great night.. Definatley one to catch when its on Foxtel.

thanx for the report JA..........
Nice to hear that the "butcher" had a good fight.
Will he retire or push on???????????
Suprised the Chief won....but excellent effort in beating one of the big guns of the K1 in Ignashov.Iggy seems to have lost his 2003 form at this stage.
Bad luck Sniper..... bet you will come back harder when given the chance of a rematch.
sounded like a full on show....can't wait to catch a glympse.
hope the refs did a better job thius time around.

what can you expect when you give the scoring duties to a bunch of kickboxing guys, and kiwi ones at that...Aaron Boyes etc. Of course they will score punches the same as kicks and knees.
Few understand the Muay Thai scoring system...basically
4 - knees
3 - elbows
2 - kicks
1 - punches
Now K1 is a hybrid of kickboxing and modified MT, but clearly the limited grapple, well executed, outscores punching, even though the audience always thinks the guy doing the mike tyson style hook has gotta be the winner.
I for one would welcome the promoter getting up on the night and explaining to the audience how the scoring works. In my mind, Pixie locking in the grapple and hammering away with knees (as we know he is very proficient at) should outscore the odd bomb with the gloves. It seems even the ref was confused given the level of grappling allowed...K1 being one strike only.
What can you say? I see plenty of decent referees, but unfortunately few consistently accurate judges on any given night.

I thought elbows were the highest scoring technique in MT.. Also isn't everything scored equally in K-1 rules?
Best of luck next time round Pixie.

doest suprise me at all, iggy is one lost guy let me tell you. his little streak is well and truly in the past.
From the K1 rules page...
Article 4
Awarding of points shall be based on the following elements:
1. Whether an effective and accurate attack is recognized, and damage is inflicted on the opponent by authorized fighting techniques. Each match consists of three (3) minutes X five (5) rounds or three (3) minutes X three (3) rounds.
2. Points will be awarded in this priority:
(1) Number of downs
(2) Extent of damage inflicted on the opponent
(3) Number of clean hits
(4) Degree of aggressiveness (points in the offensive)
The dominant fighter shall be awarded a score of ten (10), and points shall be deducted from his opponent.
K1 show no preference for particular techniques.

nah Harls, knees according to Stephan when I had a moan about how that African guy lost at Chaweng.
JA, thanks for digging that out, it might have solved global confusion, including mine...though it begs how much damage does one hard knee or leg strike do vs a punch.

Voice, I guess it must depend on who you talk to, as I've heard different from other notable sources. Best person to ask would probably be an actual MT judge???

interesting Harls, tho i guess by definition an elbow strike usually misses or it knocks out/cuts, hence it is not a hi-rep technique. Knees get thrown in the dozens due to their high scoring, elbows often never thrown if the fighters have a bit of mutual respect for their ability to fight the next week.
I agree, a solid elbow should rate highest but they are so rare in good connection, makes it difficult to judge.
My point was perhaps best shown in the JWP/Sakmongkol K1 fight where SMK matched (or won in my opinion) the first 3 rounds due to repetitive kicks into JWP's guard (a very common MT technique), while JWP countered with more punches. The scoring on this occasion would indicate kicks > punches in the judges eyes.
-----------------------------
A man's gotta know his limitations...
Ah see voice your own reasoning is your own undoing (man I should be superhero with lines like that wheres my villain)
quote:Knees get thrown in the dozens due to their high scoring
quote:a solid elbow should rate highest but they are so rare in good connection
Yes knees score highly and you can throw a lot of them with little effect. Elbows score higher (and I will find a reference to quote shortly) for the exact reason they are more difficult and inflict more damage which is the main scoring criteria for all forms of fighting true?
quote:Although the rules suggest that all techniques have an equal chance to score, certain techniques are favoured by judges as being more effective than others. Judges generally consider:
strong body kicks and well timed teeps (pushing kicks) that cause a loss of balance to be more effective than leg kicks (unless the low kick knocks an opponent off their feet or causes them visible injury)
Strong knees as more effective than punches (unless the punch staggers or drops an opponent)
Straight knees to be more effective than circle knees
Elbow strikes as not being particularly effective, unless they cut, stagger or drop an opponent.
Thats from the article in IK and I copied off muay thai online.
As for the JWP vs SMK while JWP may have thrown more punches the damage inflcited by SMK kicks may have received more weight... bearing in mind that this was K1 rules NOT muay thai and whilst the weapons are weighted evenly the damage inflicted is scored..
So I guess the bottom line is the main factor in scoring is the damage inflicted.

Man I am as Queensland as they come... Born and bred on the Gold Coast.
But I have been living in Wanaka for a bout a year. They have more Snow here!
But my time here is coming to an end and I will be back on the Goldy soon enough.
As for my logic... to keep it simple generally elbows score more cos they do more damage..

Gee I don't know Voice, I would have thought that Dave Gahan might know something about Muay Thai judging having fought more Thai opponents (in New Zealand and Thailand) than probably any other kiwi, with maybe the exception of Choppa. We're not talking bar fights either, Dave has fought the likes of Anuwat. He fought Thais at Welterweight (full thai rules just in case you're wondering) and beat more than he lost to.
Aaron Boyes - hmmm. Yes, Muay Thai is not his 1st discipline but he has had about 10 elbow fights including a televised 5 rounder against a Thai opponent. Oh yes, and he went the distance with this other Thai chappie, what was his name? Oh that right, Kaokalai.
Scotty Thompson has been training fighters and judging full thai rules for years.
You see Voice, if you knew anything at all about kickboxing in New Zealand you would know that we don't actually have 'kickboxing' (as in no knees or elbows) in New Zealand - that stuff doesn't exist over here. The only time you'll see limits on kneeing and grappling is on Dixon's K-1 shows - 3 times a year. What we call kickboxing, you guys would probably called 'modified thai' - i.e knees but no elbows. Pros fight full thai so we still see a lot of elbow fights.
You're showing your ignorance Voice if you think the judges at the battle of the Anzac don't know anything about Muay Thai judging - but here's a news flash: they weren't judging Muay Thai fights. JA has already schooled you on the difference between K-1 and Muay Thai rules so I'll leave that alone but I just thought I'd educate you on the kiwi judges' credentials.
