Hey guys,
I just spoke to Gurkan.
Unfortunately John Halford has had to pull out due to Galandular Fever (Sorry to hear, it's a nasty illness).

Apparantly Tarik has tried to get a replacement fighter but without any luck, So Gurkan is going to be fighting heavy-weight Adam Watt on Tarik's Sydney show in October.

good luck to gurkan, who can beat just about anyone on his day.

Why would he want to fight heavyweights for, and the K-1 oceania champ at that. His legs aren't made to handle the heavyweights. The only reason he lasted as long as he did in the heavyweights against the likes of Fagan was a massive heart, and the courage to never give in. I just don't know why he would want to fight a heavyweight again since he has returned successfully to his ideal weight.
He beat a few heavyweights before so good luck. I nervously hope for a victory for Ozkan if the fight happens.

I just thought, if Gurkan wanted to do another impossible (ie. go from Super Middleweight to heavyweight between fights), he could fight a heavyweight but remain at 78kg. That's if it was legally allowed.

paul c
08-09-2002, 12:40 AM
He's not going up to heavyweight guys.

I dont think Gurkan intentionally wanted to go out and fight heavy-weights, but simply just took the fight because they couldn't find anyone willing to get in the ring with Ozkan.

I believe Tarik offered the opportunity to a couple of Star fighters but didn't have much succuss. I guess the other guys didn't feel that 5 weeks is enough notice to fight Ozkan.

paul c

I can't believe I forgot to mention this,

Because of the large weight difference,
I believe Gurkan wanted this fight to be above waist kicks only.

I have to say that I think that was a wise decision.
Ozkan's words to me were that "at 78kg, you can only put so much muscle on your legs"

These rules mightn't be to everyone's liking, but regardless, I'm sure we can expect an explosive performance from both guys.

Adam's a great boxer, and also a pretty good high kicker. It will be a tough challenge for Ozkan, but far from impossible.

So Paul, is he going to put on any weight for this fight?

paul c
08-09-2002, 04:48 PM
I don't think so Remy.

He didn't like being 90Kg.
He said he was barely able to run at that weight.

what is Gurkan thinking???? is he crazy, im a Ozkan supporter but to fight Adam Watt is just crazy, look at the weight difference, just look at Adam Watt, he is just so good in his division, i just really cant see Ozkan winning do you??? maybe we can get Ozkans view on this, help us out. MISMATCH of the YEAR!!!!

paul c

Think back guys,

Who were the heavyweights that gave Ozkan a hard time?

As far as I can remember it was Fagan first and then Peter Graham.

How did they fight Gurkan?
With devastating lowkicks.
As I imagine Adam would do also.
But lowkicks won't be allowed.

If you think back of the other fights where the heavy-weigths weren't using low kicks much, Ozkan seemed to do alright...eg, he rocked Chris pretty badly at one stage before the out-of-the-ring incident. And If I remember correctly he KO'd Paul Robinson + one of the other heavy-weights from Queensland.

Look guys, I know this isn't the ideal match-up, but I think it's all that's on offer for Gurkan at the moment for the October Sydney show. Ozkan was offered an MMA type fight, but I'm extremelly glad he declined.

I get the impression from the last couple of times I've spoken to him that Gurkan just wants to fight, and will fight anyone put before him. He says that he's feeling in absolute great shape and is really enjoying fighting at the moment.

I'm actually looking forward to it. I think were going to see a hell of a show where Gurkans heart will get tested once again. And in typical Ozkan fashion he'll be there to give it his all.

Alan, I'm pretty sure the Blitz chat with Gurkan falls before the fight date. We'll have to double check the dates Megan has posted.

I knew this would freak Janer out.

We know that Gurkan is all heart. Paul it's to Gurkan's advantage to fight without legs, which was probably his trainers request. But remember that Adam Watt was a world rated boxer, Commonwealth champion from memory and he fought for the WBO title. Gurkan is not going to be kicking above the waist.
Adam Watt out punched Bernado, and has mixed it with the best of boxers. The only way I see Gurkan winning is catching Watt by surprise really early with his best shots. If Gurkan goes the distance and loses he will still be the winner.
Paul do you know how many rounds/minutes?

JANER
10-09-2002, 01:05 PM
Hey Guys, I just got off the phone with Gurkan.

He told me the fight is only kicks above the waist and its 6x 2min rounds! Adam Watt agreed but the Mckinnons brothers said they both had the flew and couldnt fight...

and also, there will be a super middleweight k1 tournament next year in feburary!

I agree Remy.

I think this fight is going to be a major bash-up.
Both doing some damage.

This fight should have been in Melbourne not Sydney.

Hi guys

Gurkan gave me a call this afternoon... we talked about many things, including the Watt fight.

When asked "why?" take this fight, he replied:

"It's a challenge, and I never back down from a challenge. I mean, Adam hasn't challenged me but nobody else would fight me - including the McKinnons who both challenged me publicly and then when the fight was offered both of them said they had the flu! - but I have challenged myself. Adam Watt is at his peak as the K-1 Oceania champion so there is no better time for me to fight him, and he is someone I have always wanted to fight and test myself against. I'm training hard and I'll be ready for a war. I have the greatest respect for Adam and I think it will be a great fight."

Certainly its an interesting one... full contact rules (no leg kicks) and chances are it will turn into a boxing contest. Good luck to both men.

Personally, I know a lot of peole dont like Ozkan but I do... the fact is that he is one of if not THE only fighter I can think of who has never ducked any challenge, the guy personifies balls. He stepped up to heavyweight, took on any challengers, took on those who challenged him at his weight (Vermes, Tsakonas) and he challenged the best (Jacobs, Briggs, Kin, Ambrose, Dendenai). Full credit to him. Whether he is limited or not in his fighting ability should not shadow the fact that he is one of the most entertaining, explosive, committed and bravest kickboxers we have seen.

See you all there at the SYDNEY TOWN HALL on the night which, by the way, is OCTOBER 11 (note change of date and venue).

I just checked Megan's Blitz chat dates.

Gurkan Ozkan is scheduled to do a Blitz chat with us on the 1st of October, so we'll be able to get our questions answered 10 days before the fight.

Hey Megan / Jeremy
I don't know if you guys have Adam Watt scheduled at all for one of the Blitz chats, but it would be really good if we could have him talk to us some time.

Don't know about the rest of you guys. I pretty much visit the major Kickboxing forums and read the mags, but know absolutely next to nothing about Adam Watt. Just occasionally come across snipets of information about his fights in Japan now and then.

Koshy

There is a couple of things that you can take from this match-up.
One is that Ozkan has monster size nuts.
Two - The state of Aussie kickboxing leaves alot to be desired when he cant even get a fight in his own weight division,
Three - The McKinnon boys both remain suspect until they start to fight the top contenders - and I mean guys like Gurkan, Halford, even Arthur(who also needs to be tested). You can jump over the post about the McKinnons but they have reached a stage now where they can remain as mid-carders or kick on and make something of their careers.

Glenn

Adam Watt was a natural cruiserweight who went up to the heavies.
I think the full contact rules won't worry him a bit, he is also a great boxer and held the Commonwealth crusierweight belt (99.9% sure).

Michael Schiavello, thats a harsh statement dont you reckon... "Personally, I know a lot of peole dont like Ozkan"..

Explain what you meant by that.

Koshy
12-09-2002, 07:49 PM
Memek, half the time Ozkan posts or there is a post written about him people bag the crap out of him. It has been going on for ages. That is why sites like this need proper moderators to stop trolling.

Michael Schiavello

I didnt mean to be harsh, Im a huge Ozkan fan... but like that last post said, u can clearly see that opinion on Ozkan is divided, hence I am a realist and so too is Gurkan, he knows and I know that a lot of people dont like him... and a lot do :)

every athlete would be kidding themselves if they thought everybody liked them all of the time! lol

Actually, Gurkan has mentioned this to me a couple of times, as have many other fighters whom I've asked to come on and say 'Good Day' and to speak to us first hand about their fight experiences.

Ozkan said that he really liked saying hello to everyone and talking to us about Kickboxing, but thought it had a lot of negative stuff on there that wasn't worth the time it took to sort through the junk. Not just about him, but also about other fighters for whom he has a lot of respect for (Jacobs, Briggs etc). I'm not talking about this forum, but Tarik's old one, and also the other (who's name escapes me at the moment).

We can't take the negative stuff seriously though. I guarantee that Tarik's site had at least 4 people who made up about 15-20 usernames. Most of it would have to be from non fighters, because I just can't see a fighter talking that much ****, unless they're seething with envy. They would write some sort of nonsense down, and then re-log on as someone else so they could back there own stupidity up.

Remember the total bull**** aimed at Scott Bannan. Mate, a fighter, let alone a champion fighter doesn't deserve **** like that. Espescially from people whom want to remain nameless.

I'm certain most of us don't have a problem with people who don't use a real name. Though, it must piss people off having someone nameless continually bagging them and many times about stuff that had nothing to do with fighting.

Everyone is entitled to their oppinion. And I'm sure many of us like reading backed up arguements. Personally, I think anyone who is incapable of being courtious is just simply retarded.

remy
13-09-2002, 03:37 PM
True words Pual. I remember posting on the board to Gurkan, that I didn't know why he bothered to come on with all the **** heads, and that he shouldn't give them the pleasure of his time. That's when he stopped posting. It's a shame that the ediots around ruin it for everyone else. That's why you need an active moderator to step in at times just like Brian on ax.

yeah bro, I got the Tarkan one as well. I believe it was on an album that they sold in Turkey but no-one imported it. They just sent the cd singles down.

I have the songs that were available on the album they made for the Turkish world cup team.

I have just got back from been in NZ over the past 3 weeks with WKBF Promotions down the South Island of NZ a place called Dunedin and in the middle of the North Island on the east Coast a place called Napier.......
Having spoken with Tarik about the fight with Gurkan & Adam Watt I must say I have very mixed feelings on this fight..it does not excite me whatsoever but have alot of respect for that Turkish
Warrior Gurkan Ozkan he is unbelievable it has taken me a couple days to go through the match up and I still can't get excited over it but wish both the boys all the best for I am a personal friend to both of them and believe the fight can go either
way...I have learn't by now never to underestimate Gurkan for he has this unforseen way of making people eat there words...
So Good Luck to both fighters and will see you there.....

Guys let me tell you something about gurkan ozkan for people who are not sure of him. Who puts on the best shows? exciting fights? HE DOES! and the problem with people these days is when someone gets to the top their always people who want to drag you down! People who know gurkan well, knows his a great guy and a good freind in and out of the ring. I know this for a fact he goes out of his way to help people all the time.
All this bull****! that he takes steroids or his a crazy gangsta its so sad and pisses me off hearing crap like that. He makes the sport so exciting! The day when Gurkan ritires from kickboxing is going to be a huge lost for the kickboxing industry. My point is at the end dont listen to stupid rumours until you really get to know someone for yourself this goes for all kickboxers some people dont realise how much hard work goes into the sport

Axekick157

I agree with you halfcast, Gurkan is the most exciting kickboxer in Australia, the day Gurkan leaves the sport will be a huge loss for the sport and for tarik.

Gurkan still has a lot to offer, after watching his last fight. Very impressive, and the leg kicks were effective as well.

paul c
21-09-2002, 03:46 PM
Some of you guys are going to hate me for saying this. To me kickboxing is only part fighting. The rest is show-business. Whether or not it was his intentional direction, Tarik seems to understand this very well and his shows have pulled way ahead.

For this type of event, Gurkan is the complete package.
Not only the great fighter that he is, but allways seems to bring in an element of drama to his fights, which sometimes starts months earlier. It makes us want to be there on the night to see what will unfold live.

JANER

Paul, I think you should seek a new profession! why not try Dr of sport? You can read into many aspects which sound so correct! Or why not de-thrown Solak's position as a super promoter! You could be

Paul "The SUPERCHARGED" Promoter!

i agree totally.

Yes Lucy,

I wanted to see the Ozkan V Watt fight, but am now also looking forward to seeing Auckland fight for the first time in quite a while. Also looking forward to Foley Vs Paul Lee. Lee is a tough guy, and I'm sure he'll give Foley an extremelly tough fight. Also looking forward to seeing Zammit fight. I haven't seen any of his fights since 2000, and it's good he's getting some air-time on Fox.

Ian is shooting for Blitz, but I'm been asked to be an Ax reporter by Brian Ritchie. I believe that Ax is going to have some big changes happening soon. A lot more content. I'm looking forward to it being more than just a message board, even though it is the king as far as boards go (damn, 3/4 of a million hits per year and over 5000 registered members, and god knows how many casual readers. Pretty impressive figures.
