View Full Version : Mundine Vs Ellis
Ok, ok. I know that this is a Kickboxing site and not a boxing forum, but what I watched this morning on the Today show about this fight would probibly provoke interest for everyone on this site as it is all about ring sports. Some lady from the AMA was arguing with Keith Ellis (Lesters brother) about not only the dangers of aging boxers and the debate over this particular match up, but also the tiresome cries from the medical fraternity to ban boxing altogether. The argument that this lady puts forward is very persuasive compared to that of Keith Ellis and others defending these ring sports that we all love. The fact that this person stated that any person showing promise as a boxer should be directed towards safer and in her opinion 'more sensible' sports really frustrated me. The reason why I love combat sports so much is the fact that in this modern, refined world where much of our basic human instincts are surpressed and diluted there still exists a place where like minded individuals can test there skills and enjoy exercising the most basic, instinctive activity with respect to themselves and the sport. Giving equal oportunities to people regardless of their background. Their are no colour/racial or sexist attitudes in the sport. All that exists are two contestans facing each other, refusing to give an inch and striving for personal validation, glory and satisfaction.
It could be argued that Lester is making a foolish move stepping into the ring against all the odds that face him. Yet I support him. This awesome act of courage, self beliefe and intestinalfortitude has inspired me. Inspiration is a powerful tool, and those who generate it should be respected and held in high asteem. Good luck Lester, I hope you flog the cocky prick!

Matt i have to disagree with you on this one.Lester is not only disrespecting himself but boxing as a whole by not allowing his self respect, commonsense and experience dictate that he should stay retired.Contrary to popular belief Lester does need the money and is doing this out of financial desperation. His foray into kickboxing showed he could not handle Steve Douet(with hardly any kicks thrown) who is a sub par Junior Middleweight as a boxer. Had he fought Baris Nezif he would have been KO'D senseless. Now i put it to you that Baris or Steve would not last 1 round with Anthony in a boxing match.
Thus what Lester is doing is in NO WAY based on self belief or intestinal fortitude but sheer DESPERATION.
ANOTHER BLACK EYE FOR BOXING!!!

I guess we are calling Ian Jacobs, Gurkan Ozkan, Prince Amir and Tosca Padridis etc a discrace as well?? All the mentioned fighters all retired and did make comebacks.
I disagree its a mismatch as anything can happen in the ring. As for the Steve Douet fight, Lester won that fight. Even Tarik said his fighter was robbed of the decsion. Lester Ellis looked very good in the ring and especially that 1st round knock out at the festival hall!
Lester, I know its for the money and for the reputation of trying to stop THE MAN, but hey your no loser for me.
You have lost alot of weight and you have the desire & will to fight. Dont listen to a woman politician who has never put on a set of gloves and who is just buying cheap votes. Just go with your instincts. You know your body more than anyone else.
IT IS LESTERS DECISION TO FIGHT! no-one elses.
This issue continues on to kickboxing, obviously it a scapegoat to try and ban combat sports. cant you see that?

I'd like to ad to this thread. I have to say I feel a little sorry for Lester Ellis. He is the product of an era of Australian boxing where fighters were not paid their worth. Though he was around at the same time as Jeff Fenech, who went on to do well for himself, he never seemed to have the opportunites that Fenech did. And in my opinion, Lester Ellis was the better of the two fighters.
I remember watching Lester Ellis fight Pat Leglise for the QLD? title at festival hall when I was only a young'n. The guy had style, speed and power. At one point in the fight he switched to southpaw, threw two right hooks, switched back to orthodox and moved away before Leglise even knew what hit him, all in the blink of an eye. It was beautiful to watch!
Anyway, though he is probably 15 years past his prime, I'll be cheering for him. Maybe if you can pull this off, you can have one last decent payday. Go Lester.
deanspartan,
I beleive he is there for the money as earlier in the year he was putting his world title belt for sale. He is fighting well above his best fighting weight and seems out of his league. But don't even bother mentioning the duette fight which lester dominated. That decision was ridiculous and a disgrace to the sport!

Remy what you say regarding the Douett fight may be acurate BUT my point is that Lester in his prime would have KOD Duett in 2 rounds. If he had any chance of beating Mundine he should have done to Douett what Baris did to him in 1 round thus i feel that if a fighter can not come in at his best or close to it then it ceases to be about the sport and all about money.
Janer to mention Gurkan or Jacobs in comparison is not logical as these guys are in their late 20s /early thirties not close to 40 and have not been retired for almost 17 years. Also their opposition was not a total mismatch.Tosca and Amir are probably the same age but they also have not been retired for anywhere near as long and they were matched accordingly.
I feel Mundine will carry him for a few rounds to silence the critics but its a farce of hideous proportions.
