Open Letter from Heavyweight Contender Shannon Briggs to "Iron" Mike Tyson:
Sep 8, 2003: Shannon Briggs

Hey "Bad" Brad

This is Shannon Briggs. I read you guys at Doghouse Boxing daily and enjoy the site very much. I'm dropping you a line to let you know that for the past few months my promoter's Greg Cohen and Cedric Kushner have offered Mike Tyson a $10,000,000 guarantee to fight me Dec. 6th at Madison Square Garden. This is considering everything goes well with his court case, which is set for September 15th, in Brooklyn. They have also stated that he will receive $3,000,000 up front and 60/40 split of the pay-per view. Brad we feel as though this is a great fight for New York City and should do very well as far as television buys go.

Mike Tyson, Rid**** Bowe and I are all from the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York. Hopefully when and if, Rid**** returns to the ring we can have a "Battle of Brownsville." Honestly, I don't think there is enough interest nor people care if Oleg Maskev wins another fight. I mean no disrespect to him and his team, but he is not a draw and the public just doesn't want to see Mike Tyson against another push over. Brad all that we need is Mike Tyson's signature on the contract.

The proposal to make the fight has been put in the hands of his acting management team. With respect to them they have stated they are not going to make a decision until after the Brooklyn case is settled. They claim to have other deals and need to weigh their options. Personally I can't see what other option makes more sense in terms of money. Other than fighting Lennox Lewis or Roy Jones, JR., nowhere else can he make even close to that type of money. Mike's lowest pay-per view numbers I believe were 400,000 and I truly foresee the fight between him and I doing much more than that.

The gate alone is a 10 million dollar gate at Madison Square Garden. Between guarantee and TV buys this guy would make $20,000,000. Tyson cannot do that fighting Oleg Maskev. Showtime has already said they are not paying anywhere close to that if that fight takes place. Thanks for your time and allowing me to get my thoughts out.

So it seems we'll see Tyson fight on Dec 6; but against who and where are open issues. However, it seems that K1 will not be able to get Tyson into Tokyo due to his criminal convictions and also that K1 will not be able to match the terms offered by Briggs.

That gate taking figure looks a little optomistic. Felix posted some stuff recently on ax from someone who had been heavily involved with boxing PPV, and I thought the figures were like a tenth of that for Madison square garden.
