In a move that has the potential to greatly impact the 2010 K-1 Grand Prix, Hesdy Gerges's team has filed a formal complaint against Semmy Schilt stemming from their Final 16 match last weekend. Filed by Black Label Fighting and It's Showtime, the complaint argues that Schilt received illegal medical attention between rounds of the October 2 fight and calls for Schilt to be disqualified from the December 11 Grand Prix finals. Here is the official statement from It's Showtime and Black Label Fighting:
"In the K-1 regulations is written that in case a fighter gets injured during the fight, the wound may not be treated by one of the cornermen without interference of the official physician and referee. However, this did happen right after the first round by [Schilt's manager] Bas Boon. Schilt, who received numerous lowkicks right from the beginning of the fight, didn't check one of those lowkicks very well so his right shinbone got torn open. If the referee had seen this right away, the doctor had to take a look at the wound and continuing the fight wouldn't have been medically responsible. The referee never discovered this wound, because Schilt's corner ‘secretly' applied a lot of tape on the wound."
The exact wording of the rule in question can be found in the official K-1 rules, Article 22.5 (emphasis mine):
"Article 22: Protector
The use of protectors made of rubber, plastic, or other material is not allowed for any reason including the protection of an injury. However, when the official physician or the referee and judges allow the usage of protectors depending on the injuries, the following applies;
...
5. Only the official physician is authorized to tape the injured area, once the mach starts."
That is the point Gerges's team is arguing - that Schilt's corner applied tape between rounds 1 & 2, and that doing so is in violation of this rule.
Watching the video, you can not see the tape being applied, but Schilt does clearly come out for the 2nd round with tape on his leg that was not present when the match started. Assuming Gerges's team is correct and this tape was indeed applied by Schilt's corner without the official physician, it seems there is little question here - Schilt is in violation of the rule and the complaint is valid.

big deal...there is no way the fight would ever be stopped for a cut to the shin.
The corner will just plead ignorance and say the ref should have intervened.

May not have been stopped by the ref, but may have been stopped by Schilt or his corner. Similar to Kenichi Ogata in the 04 J-Max.

I think that fans all over the world will be hoping that they can boot him out for that. Any excuse will do. They should bring in a height restriction.

don't worry, I think if FEG wanted to keep the big man down they'd have no problems thinking of a suitable reason.

Stupid rule, Schilt won. What is the difference between this scenario and boxing trainers smearing vaseline mixed with adrenaline to stop a cut between rounds? Whilst the cut treatment is not legal in NSW, it certainly is certainly is in many other countries. Treatment between rounds is fair. Fair enough if they used a defribilator to get Semmy back on his legs, but applying a large band-aid is hardly worth protesting about. If Gerges is that good, he should have knocked Semmy out.

Hasn't Peter Aerts had a K-1 fight stopped before because of an ugly shin gash that wouldn't stop bleeding without the bandaging? I think it was back in 2004? Pretty sure it stopped him progressing in the tournament.
I'm sure it's happened to a few other guys in K-1 tournaments before & they haven't been given doc clearance to progress to the next round because of it.
Having said that, if the officials didn't notice it on the night, I doubt they would do anything about it now. Even as much as the K-1 brass seems to dislike Semmy, I cant see them overturning a decision this far after the fact.
They should have officials watching the corners between rounds.

This. Reeks off sour grapes and only makes Hesdy look like a right loser. He had a clear gameplan (chop the lead leg), tried to apply it, but failed to get the win and was clearly outpointed and gassed by midway through Round 2.
A bit of blood trickling from the shin wouldn't have changed the fight's outcome. Just accept the loss and train harder for the 2011 GP, because I do think Hesdy has great potential.

You've got to think Hesdy is a bit over fighting Semmy whenever he gets a start in the K-1.

You guys are missing the point. Of course no ref would stop a fight because of a cut to the shin, however the fighter or his corner might. It is a fundamental rule of combat sports and it is cheating. Whether or not he deserves to lose his place is a different story, I personally don't think he does, but he should at least be fined or something.

Can be a fight ending injury and a few more kicks to the open wound would open it up worse and see Gerges thru to the net round
Remember locally Siebert's leg opened up and ended his bout with Bangin Ben.
