It would be good if we could get Leko's attendance confirmed. I have half a dozen non kickboxing mates that are planning to fly down from Sydney only because of Leko.

leko vs chris?! it wont be great thats for sure. bad for oz. the japanese will see this and say, is this the best guy they have? what a joke! any heavy can get lucky, but the dog isnt who i would want representing oz as our one fighter to take on a k1 seed!

Do you guys remember Hunt's first International K-1 fight.
I'm pretty sure he was thrown in with Jeromme.
It's nothing new that they'll see a seeded guy fighting a new guy.
hunt won the oceania 2 times. he deserved it.

That's a good arguement Len.
I think he actually one it once and then fought Lebanner while still under Alex Tui. Then he went into his second Oceania with Hape as trainer.
Still, I get and agree with your point though.
But at the same time, I think Chris has probably had just as much experience now fighting the local big guys as Hunt did before fighting in Japan. Or near enough.
Chris has fought a few of the same guys Hunt did, but without the same results. But, he's still a very hard boy, and I don't think Leko would have the fight without any headaches caused him by Chris.
Hope Chris does well, but I think Graham would have been a better oponent for Leko.

Remy, I can't argue with that.
But, do you reckon that Graham would have an easier time making it to Japan by fighting Leko or by having a crack at getting through as the Oceania winner?

True Paul, but isn't the whole point of getting to Japan (apart from the $$) the fact that you have the chance to prove yourself against the best? If you want to be the best you have to fight the best! At least fighting a one off fight against someone like Leko it comes down to your skills against his as opposed to the luck factor that comes into the 8 man tournament format (a la Ernesto's win in last years Grand Prix). I would like to know if they actually offered it to anyone else - I know that they didn't offer it to Jason and am sure that he would have jumped at it if they did! No one doubts Chrisopoulides' heart but was anyone seriously considering him as more than "the guy you definately do not want to meet first up"? You could see him beating guys up - just not beating them, if you know what I mean! It would have been better to see someone who has a realistic chance of winning against Leko, then we could potentially have had 2 Oceania representatives in the final qualifier - 4 actually with Ray and Mark already in there! 4 out of 16! How great would that be for the sport Down Under?!

Again, another great post.
Mat, I do agree with you mostly about everything. I also can't argue that Jason probably has a better chance on paper.
Let me try and explain my ilogical view.
I kind of like the way that they sometimes throw in a surprise mystery fighter. I don't know why, but I guess it's as much a lottery ticket for a good fighter to draw the poor, as it is for the poor fighter to have gotten in there in the first place. I hope that makes sense.
Re Chris,
I think challenges like this have the potential to make fighters sometimes rise that notch faster.
E.g, I don't know how many people laughed at Michael Charbaji, Lucy and myself when we told them without doubt that Hunt would win the Oceania.
Only for the same thing to happen the following year. And again when many of us then started to predict Hunt as the 2001 World champ. Do you guys remember the **** the Hunt fans were getting from the more experienced K-1 supporters on Ax.
Mat, I must admit that when I first heard that Dwayne was going to fight Leko, I felt that it was too big an ask of Dwayne. But then when I thought about it, I thought back of how many notches Hunt rose in just a couple of fights where he had bigger challenges. The guy just stepped up bigger and better than ever.
Think about the Hunt that fought Briggs and lost.
Thing about the Hunt that fought and struggled with Chris not long before the Oceania.
And then think about the Hunt you saw step in to fight on the first Oceania.
All that in a matter of 3 fights. I think some of you may agree that he became an altogether hungrier and more agressive fighter over night.

Paul,
I absolutely agree about fighters lifting for big fights (lets call it the 'rocky effect'!) and Mark Hunt does it all the time. Compare his 'superfight' (and I use the term in its loosest possible sense) against Peter Graham at the 2001 k-1 NZ (a fight so boring that the crowd was booing!) to his performance a couple of months later at the Grand Prix. Hunt is a big occassion fighter and certainly lifts for the big ones.
I would argue though that if you can get that sort of result by taking a previously fair - middling fighter then what kind of effect would you have on a skilled one like Peter Graham or Jason Suttie?

Hi Everyone, This has been good reading by Matt and Len. Though the intiall point was of Leko doping, just a quick one on this. Through my large involvment in Sport Science and also my Degree in Natuaral Science and extended studies in Horomones. One thing for sure on a World Wide scale in almost every sport that not everyone is 100% Natural. In the States you can walk into a Bodybuilding shop in LA or a Supplement shop and buy products which are Banned here. These are things which Martial Artists of all styles would benefit from. Im not talking about Steriods, but Pro-Hormones and Humane Growth Hormones. Some of the most beneficial to say a K-1 Fighter would be 19-Nor-Androdesteione, this not only help build quick lean muscle but improves your fast twitch muscle fibres abd repairs damage tissue. This is what commonly sprinters use and get caught for but they use the steriod version Nandrolone which is detected in blood urine samples. It is very hard to get caught using Pro-Hormones and almost impossible to get caught using HGH, as in essence you are adding in Hormones that are naturally produced by your body anyway. The thing there is why do you need this, well for me at the age of about 28 our levels slowly of such specific Hormones drop every year and in a nut shell we age. Its almost to say that at this age our bodies have stopped living and then the process of Death begins. I no a very very broad statment, but if I was to get wrap up into talking about this and the possible beneficial effects Pro-Hormones and HGH would have on profoundly sick/injured the mentally ill etc etc etc I would be here all day and probably pretty pissed of as its a touchy subjuect for me. Last point on this issue, a logical person would wonder why in the Sates can you buy this legally but not here? Well in the US they are trying there best(Government) to bann all such substances. Now the point that really infuriates me is this, since these products are naturally produced by the body and therefore can be reproduced synthetically very easily by any Supplement company, well... who does that shut the door and therefore control over epecially in $$$ Terms. The massive World Wide Pharmaceuticl Companys who are therefore hand in hand with the Government in getting these things banned so they Control who gets what and for what massive price. Old people, yes a little, sick people? a little etc etc etc etc etc etc. To think we are being robbed of something that can treat with easy major problems we have in the mental health area such as depression, anxeity, OCB, etc etc and Cronic injuries to the neck/back the list is endless and endless. Not the magjic elixer of life but pro-hormones and its cousins in the pre-cursor area can have a absolutely huge beneficial day to day benefits to all men and women if we had the correct access to these products.
I better go damm it as I have to be somewhere but think of it like this? If a Drug Company cant put a Patent on something it is of no value to them, so if a plant was found in say the Amazon or Kakadu that was found to cure AIDS or Cancer do you think us the public would ever hear about it????

Hi again
Never got to finish what I was saying about Leko supposledly getting caught for Doping. Im not sure at all if they drug test in K-1, IT is an extremely expensive procedure, easily masked and its obvioulsy been abused anyhow. Take a look at Bobb Sapp, you do not get like that Naturally!!! Even for Geneticaly Gifted African/American Athletes, think about the enormous punishment these guys put there bodies throughto compete in say the GP Final. There has to be quaterzone involved somewhere, and I dont disagree. Look at the UFc dudes, man look at Frank and Ken Shamrock. They have these massive distented bellies from Steriod use as Steriods not only build mass muscle they also make things like your Intestines grow larger and thicker. Same with HGH, you can often tell this may be in use because they have a Gap between there 2 front teath as there jaws have grown!
Now on the issue of Chris Chris( me and my mates use this no disrepect to him its just easier)taking on Leko.......? Good on him for taking a Fighters Chance! One point I think is being missed is( I think) if Chris Chris does defeat Leko he does not qualify for K-1 Japan as this is a K-1 Superfight, Normally over 5 X 3. Though the beauty of this is that if he does pull off a shock upset and wins he has suddenly made a big name for himself in Japan. Even if he lost and put in a Huge Hearted Warrior effort and losses he still wins in the Eyes of the Japanese. Now on paper it looks like a mismatch but in the heavyweight world or any world anything can happen. Leko is a sublimey skilled fighter who also Boxes Professionally in Europe, technical & tough will skill and experience to match. Chris Chris is a very tough Man with perhaps 20kgs on Leko and an akwardness in style that Leko would not have seen for a while since he has been on the K-1 circuit. So lets hope it all goes ahead, I dare say that with Leko's Professional attitude he will be here to fight and so will Chris Chris.
Back to the K-1 Oceania as it stands on the advert a replacment will be needed to take Chris Chris's spot to Fight Doug Viney. We are also yet to see Slowinski's wild card opponent. If the advertisment on the back of IKB reads and looks correct Suttie and Graham are in the top half of the Draw and Viney and Slowinski in the bottom. Irrespective of Viney's and Slowinski's opponents I see them coming through. I also see Suttie being to Strong for Vasiliko(another Greek( not a racial slur) in the Oceania who lives in Europe?) and Graham to experienced for Bodrozic. This would leave Suttie V Graham which is almost to tough to call considering injuries etc.. but Im going to say Graham due to his new size and skills. Viney V Slowinski, this I see Paul being to strong as long as he watches for Vineys beautiful handwork and uses his reach and awesome leg kicks.
So Final Time! Lets say Suttie V Slowinski, Im going out on a limb and saying Paul with his Youth and height + the fact he hasnt lost in 5 years. Plus he jst Ko'd Kruth in 1 round( Kruth had previously Ko'd Leko in 2 and Bernardo in 3 last year) and has previoulsy won an eight man( yes different weight)and he's a young Man with a Destiny. Suttie is awesome and no doubt deserves to be in Japan when you look at his credentials. Now lets say its Graham, another great fighter, big legs kicks, new Boxing skills and very tough and skillfull. But again going out on a limb I again pick Paul to continue his rapid rise to Stardom! Obviously as a friend of Alan Wong and Paul I am a bit biased but I have seen him grow from a young middleweight to where he his now and GO PAUL YOU BIG POLAK!
PEACE
