yes indeed...Masato beat Souwer in a 5R decision and Ray Sefo scored a decision win over 3 rounds (which will keep Shiv happy). I was most surprised with young Hiroya losing.

The Masato fight was a cracker...started fairly reserved and really built up to a crescendo in the 4th and 5th. I thought it was very even until Masato caught Souwer with a cheeky straight right in the 4th which momentarily sat him on his bum. Souwer really fired up after that and landed nice hands, kicks and a few good knees. Credit to both guys though, can certainly take a shot and never backed off an inch...super fit, would have lasted another couple rounds. Masato likewise stepped up both the kicking and hand combos later in the fight.
Great effort and fair result for Masato...maybe Souwer was the right opponent given the battles these guys have had over the years. Definitely take a look at the fight if you can.

And no Drew, as good as Masato was, I do think Petrosyan is the man this year and would have beaten him but Masato would have given him the best run of the lot.

Might be a stupid question, but I thought Masato was retiring?

I heard Overeem just about murdered his opponent, could have been over-exaggerated though.

Fujita who took on Overeem spent all his ring-time trying to stay out of range, before he got the step up knee. Not a good bout if you wanted to see a display of technique.

You know that the guy he was fighting is also a Judo gold medallist, right?

we went over and trained with yoshido hidehiko (the gold medalist hironaka is referring too) a few years back. he actually beat mark hunt in a pride fight soon after we went to japan. was a great trip and he is a very very good judo exponent as the olympic gold shows.

yeah i do and i know his a much more well rounded MMA fighter 2, it was just such a bit stretch of experiences and skills.

ishii woulda got killed with that type of performance if he had debut in the UFC.

The 8 count in the Souwer-Masato fight was utter BS. It was a slip on the main sponsorship logo in the middle of the canvas. You can see that after he gets hit he still executes a whip kick to the leg as he is going down. When you are dropped you don't follow through on a technique like that. It was a well timed punch sure, but it didn't drop him in the sense like an 8 count should.

Dodgy count aside, Masato still would have won the fight on points. I think Souwer was a bit too slow out of the gates in Round 1 and 2, which left him with too much catch up work during rounds 3-5.

Great fight all in all.

Sower would have had to KO him to win but it wass prob in the contract that he wasnt allowed to hurt him

I don't agree...it was a well-timed right that collected Souwer and hurting the opponent isn't a requisite in scoring a KD. Yes he was off-balance as was in the first stage of setting up for the round kick but that's what good timing is about when hitting your opponent. There were no complaints from Andy both then and after the fight.

The KD by Masato on Buakaw a couple years ago in the epic Max fight was a bit similar in that it was only good timing and being off balance that scored the KD. Bit tough but valid nonetheless.

I agree with you that Andy's start let him down...unfort sometimes it takes this sort of thing to happen before you see the real Souwer unleash with his full repertoire.

Ishii is and will always be terrible. His Judo game is not simply not transferrable to MMA.

Points taken. If there were no complaints from Souwer's camp and K1 do count 'flash' KDs, then I stand corrected.

Pretty sad to see Masato retire in such good form. Would love to a few more 5 x 3 K1 rule super fights from him before officially calling it a day.
