View Full Version : Fights for beginners
Hi All,
I remember reading an article about tournaments in queensland where beginners can fight in a tournament. Small events free entry and non televised. Wearing headgear, 16 oz gloves and protection and short rounds. This sounds like a great idea to get more fighters into the ring as it gives them a chance to develop before entering a major fight nite infront of so many ppl. And im sure would raise the quality of televised fights. After all it seems ridiculous to have first time fighters on TV..i've heard of guys with records of 1 fight under there belt getting on tv.
I was wondering does anyone know why this sort of thing is not being organised in NSW..i.e laws etc?

I'd also like to know if these events are held in Melbourne
Thanks in advance

they have a similar thing over here in the UK for beginners (although they might be a step lower in level), they call them Inter-club fights, but they don't have any decision on who one or lost. I know that novices in amatuer boxing also fight in "exhibitions"... same principle in that it gets the fighter used to being in front of a crowd etc.

We also have the same type of thing at the Bulldog Gym in NSW
We have been having semi contact days for over a year with inter-club bouts.
It's a great way for people looking to fight to get a taste of what it's like.

Hey!
Nick runs them out of the Manly gym every few months.
All fighters wear 16oz gloves, shin pads and mouth guards.
Gyms involved so far have been Bulldog Gyms Manly, Castle Hill, North Sydney, Canberra and Batemans Bay. Boxing Works, Double Dragon, Sinosic Petroch, Reflex and a few more.
We have 3 qualified judges, a ref and time keeper. All fighters receive a trophy and one is also given to the fighter of the day.
All fighters weigh in one the day and then get matched with a close weight fighter from a different gym.
These days are designed for people looking to fight and who have had 3 or less fights.
I can let you know when our next one will be held,
thanks Rochelle for the info much aPPreciated. Yeah please let me know of the next event i know a few guys that would be interested.

Hey Rochelle,
I see this is an old thread but am wondering if there is still an active Bulldog Gym in Batemans Bay as I am looking to move to the area. If there is, it doesn't have a great web presence. Any info you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

i don't like these.
i think there should be more interclub sparring where you organise to turn up at other gyms and work with the boys there. good for getting people up to speed with what they could be facing and for prepping fighters before fights etc. but don't call them fights.
fights should be fights, no head/shin protection etc.
Boosie,
trust me these are fights. Plenty of people get blood noses and knocked out, even wearing 16oz gloves and shin pads.

JWP, you're meant to say...'these days are great experience for novices with pro fighters on hand to give advice and keep control of the bouts':D
