Gurkan backs up "The MAN"

Anthony Mundine's sparring partner Gurkan Ozkan has taken a swipe at a group of leading Australian boxers for not offering to help Mundine as he prepares to face tough American Antwun Echols for the WBA super-middleweight title.

"I'm the only person in this country who is willing to get behind Anthony," Ozkan said.

A world kickboxing champion, Ozkan also lashed out at Mundine's main local rival Danny Green, questioning the standard of opponents he has taken on and the claims he has made about beating Mundine.

"I'm the best sparring partner that Anthony has had so far in his career," Ozkan said.

"I want to help him get to that world title, which is a lot more than what a bunch of other blokes are doing.

"Danny Green won't help him, Paul Briggs won't help him, Sam Soliman won't help him but, instead, I read that they wanted to get together and help Echols.

"That is un-Australian. It is one of the most un-Australian things I've heard of. It's like catching your mate with your girl and him saying I'm just cuddling her.

"These blokes should be ashamed of themselves. How can they want an Australian to lose?"

Mundine has frequently clashed with Green and the others as he has become the dominant super-middleweight in the Southern Hemisphere despite losing a WBA title fight when he was knocked cold by light-punching German Sven Ottke.

Ozkan says it is time for Mundine's rivals to make their peace with the world title contender before the fight.

"They should come to Anthony and say, 'Anthony, we are going to put our differences to one side, let's spar and let's get you a world title and then if you want to give us a shot, go for it'.

"They should be men and do it like that, not the other way round."

Ozkan accused Green, who is unbeaten with 16 knockout wins in 16 pro fights, of riding on Mundine's wave of success.

"He has tailed along on what Anthony has done," he said.

"People wouldn't have the same level of interest in him if it wasn't for Anthony."

Ozkan, who will be on the undercard for the Mundine-Echols fight at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on August 6, says Mundine needs to work on his power over the next seven weeks to become more of a threat to Echols.

"He [Mundine] is very fast but I don't think he realises his full potential," Ozkan said.

"I'm man enough to say he has hit me a few times but I don't think he has hit me with his best.

"The little shot that he did hit me with, I can definitely feel the power, but I didn't go down.

"He has got the athleticism and he's got the skills. He just needs to plant his feet a little more and not be shy about using that right hand.

"His right hand is like a cannon and I think that after eight weeks of sparring the last thing he will be is shy about using that right hand. If I'm not careful, I might feel it.

"I'd rather cop it here and help him get the world title instead of being a hero like everyone else and trying to help the other guy."

not many people like mundine because he fights bums and makes stupid comments about america and so on.

green has consitantly called out mundine to fight him, but mundine refuses.

After seeing some of that footage of Echols and mundines late attitude... Echols may be toooo good!!!

As for Ozkan getting smashed... I have never seen it happen and dont think we ever will! I love Green as a boxer dont get me wrong, but I wanna see more of Ozkan in the ring before he says goodbye to the sport.

Has anyone seen Echols fight before?

Also Pete I dont think anyone likes America! Just Mundine got sucked in at such a wrong time!!!

Mundines new puppet should get his facts straight before makin a gerkin of himself. Fact is both Pauls and Solimans camp have contacted and offered Mundines camp on many occassions to train with them and not once recieved a reply and have left the offer with Anthony open any time he wants to spar with them he is more than welcome.
Danny also rang 2UE while Anthony was guest compare the other night and wished Mundine all the best for his fight.

Seriously Pete you gotta get over it. Words mean stuff all!! Many fighters, promoters and all types of people from all diferent types of businesses and professions say things... However actions speak louder! I never saw mundine shoot or kill anyone! I didnt take what Mundine said to heart. Why? Because he is no politician but rather another human like you and me. BUT I have said this many, many times before... Fighting is NOT the most intellectual sport/job (whatever you call it) in the world! I am sure what he "said" was well off to what he was "meant" to say. Putting politcal views aside, this is a sport! Not parliament house or an electoral vote.

Remember it was Mundines arrogance, irrational comments and his knockout style of fighting is why boxing is where it is. Put aside all the crap the media wants to portray him as, Mundine is great for the sport and does create a HUGE buzz!

I spoke to Koder a couple of days ago regarding Paul Briggs sparring Anthony in preparation for his fight. We have made the offer and I'm awaiting their reply. I can't do more than that so it's now up to the Mundine team if they want quality sparring against Briggs or not. It's alright blasting people over being patriotic and such but maybe they better get the facts right before going off half cocked. The offer has been in place since day one and all it takes is a phone call and we will be there. No hidden agendas just good sparring for both Paul and Anthony.
Fistic Fury hasn't any problems with the Fenech camp or the Mundine camp from our end of things and we would love to do sparring with either or both teams.

mundine has taken the easy way to this tittle fighting has beens and bums he has fourght to good fighters and lost (ottke and in my mind soliman as well) i'm sure there are many fighters that are jelous of mundine world tittle fight, simply because there many fighters that have and are taking the hard and right way to a title fight, not taking the easy way to, this fighters are earning it like green, (who could have had a fight with ottke but turned it down so he could fight deisle to show he was the best in oz)

Paul Briggs is doing the same ducking no challenges, fighting anyone, any where to get that shot and prove that he is the best.

Guys love or hate "The Man" he has progressed well in the boxing circuit, Anthony's biggest enemy is himself, he tells it like it is and doesn't hold back.

My personal opinion is that he is mentally challenged, in an educational form and has no self-control over what comes out of his mouth. He should try thinking before he speaks. This is no excuse for his comments and I believe better management would nip this in the bud.

Anthony has not only made comments on America but has also put down the aboriginal community several times, it now time to keep his mouth shut and show us what "The Man" is all about.

Good Luck to Anthony but I think in reality Echols will be to strong.

Some things to consider:

1. Why would Mundine fight Green? He is a pro, and what's in it for him? If he wins it still doesn't get him a world title and doesn't do jack sh!t for his rep overseas, if he loses then he loses out on a chance at a title. Like it or not, but Pro Boxing is a business, and I think Mundine not fighting Greene is in large part a business decision. Doesn't mean from a sporting point of view that this is right, and I don't like it, but that's pro boxing.

2. I don't think Mundine meant the individual people killed in the WTC deserved it, and he did go out of his way to try and apologise for his comments (I recall him doing the tv circuit - 7:30 report, The Fat etc to try and make amends, but it was too late. Thing is, he tried to make a political statement and be critical of prior american foreign policy, but unfortunately for him he wasn't capable... his brain (?) and his mouth aren't connected.

I don't particularly like him either, but I'd like to see another world title come down under... hopefully Green can get himself a belt (from ottke?) and they can meet in a unification bout ... then Mundine will have no excuses.
