Alistair Overeem retires Brock Lesnar |

![]() Ex K-1 champion and rising MMA star Alistair Overeem stopped UFC top draw Brock Lesnar in the first round of UFC 141's main event in Las Vegas, effectively retiring the ex-wrestler.
UFC promoted the fight as a matchup of opposites, between Overeem's high-level striking and Lesnar's powerful wrestling. Yet Lesnar rarely attempted takedowns and instead spent most of his time trying to throw punches or knee strikes. "When I got him under control and put him under pressure, I knew it was working in my favour," Overeem said. A left kick to the liver caused Lesnar to double over moments later as the pain kicked in. Overeem immediately moved to stand over him and throw right hands to the head repeatedly until referee Mario Yamasaki ended the fight. "I could see (the kick) hurt him, then I knew I got him," Overeem said. "Given his background, his time to prepare for this fight, I knew he's not going to be able to defend that liver kick."
