The Decappertator - Wes Capper

Entertaining in and outside the ring, the propeller hat-wearing Decappertator is definitely making his mark in the sport. Tough, talented, with an impressive record and a great sense of humour, Wes Capper is someone IK wanted to get to know.

How did you get into Muay Thai?
I have always enjoyed hitting things and being destructive. I began doing MMA at first, consisting of Jiu-Jitsu, freestyle wrestling, boxing and Muay Thai. However, my passion has always lain within Muay Thai.

What is it about Muay Thai that you love?
I see it as the ultimate stand-up discipline. You can use eight different weapons and grapple. It takes great concentration to not only attack but defend as well. The deep culture within Muay Thai is infectious. Also, the fact that you never stop learning draws me to this sport.

How do you prepare for a fight?
Preparation is always tough! A lot of technique, sparring, dieting and pad-work are a must, though doing a lot of cross-training definitely helps me have an edge. Since training at The Mill gym with my conditioning coach Nick Thelan, I have never felt so fit and strong. My mental release comes from joking around and busting a groove - it really helps me relax.

Who are you outside of the ring?
I'm a plumber by day, passionate fighter by night. I always stay fit and eat well regardless of fighting. I'm very easy going and really love my music. Joking around with friends and playing the odd prank here and there is not out of character [laughs].

What was it like the first time you jumped in the ring?
Well, the thought that I should have started playing table tennis instead did cross my mind! There was a lot of excitement, nerves and uncertainty, though it has become a lot easier since then.

What have you learnt up until now since your first fight?
It takes a great team to achieve great things... Without good training, sparring and support it's very hard to push the limits to chase your dreams.

Tell me a little about your most recent fight...
I recently trained overseas in Holland and Thailand, which was an experience I'll never forget. I fought in Thailand and won, which has been a big confidence-booster.

I have to ask, what is going through your mind when you decide to wear a propeller-hat in the ring?
[Laughs] The hat! I have worn the hat since my fourth fight. It was a dare that I most happily won and ever since then I have always worn it. I enjoy bringing some humour and light entertainment to a very serious sport.

What, or rather, who, is next for you?
The fight in Adelaide on 30 July on a WKA promotion. Then I'll be fighting Dusan Salva on 17 September in Perth, which will be a tough fight with full-Thai rules. I'm really excited about the rest of the year and want to fight as much as I can and on as many promotions as I can, as I find the essence of a good fighter is fighting on a regular basis. I hope opportunities keep presenting themselves and I'll fight whoever they put in front of me.

What has been your greatest achievement or proudest moment as a fighter?
The fact that it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to prepare for fights and actually getting in there and having a go, is an achievement within itself.

Who inspired or guided you along the way?
Being involved in this sport has introduced me to some great people. All have had an influence in some way, but my biggest mentor is without a doubt my coach Habby Heske - he is like family to me!

What are you goals for the future?
I'm not out to claim as many belts as possible. I want to be the best so I'll fight the best. IK
